Animal welfare officials are investigating whether a religious or ritualistic practice was behind the death of nine animals - six chickens, a pygmy goat and two pigeons - whose carcasses were found along an isolated path of Rock Creek Park in the District.

Some of the animals had been decapitated. Some still had their heads, but their throats had been slashed. Investigators believe they were killed elsewhere and dumped in the park.

"They were sacrificed and left there," said Scott Giacoppo, a vice president with the Washington Humane Society.

The carcasses were taken Wednesday to a laboratory in Virginia for necropsies. Veterinarians and investigators will look for clues that could point to a specific group or individual.

But what was done to the animals may not be a crime - if they were killed in a humane way.

"You have to do it in one fell swoop," Giacoppo said. "It has to cause instantaneous death. Anything short of that we can argue, is cruelty, and [we can] prosecute."

The animals were found Tuesday afternoon by a person walking along the path in a section of park in the 3500 block of 17th Street NW, near Piney Branch Parkway. The area sits behind a large apartment complex.

Strange marks have started to appear on roads in the area.

Reader Maria Speechley spotted one at the junction of Grove Road, Uxbridge and Grove Way.

"No one seems to know what it is for and I have not noticed any others in the immediate vicinity," she said.

There is another of the white, spray painted symbols in the pedestrianised section of Uxbridge High Street, close to Lloyds Bank.

Boston Psychiatric Unit's imprisonment of teenager Justina Pelletier needs State investigation into reckless endangerment of psychiatric diagnosing

Image
“Medical care that causes severe suffering for no justifiable reason can be considered cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and if there is State involvement and specific intent, it is torture.” - United Nation’s 2013 Report by the Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
For thirteen months, Lou and Linda Pelletier's youngest daughter, Justina, has been a prisoner at the hands of Boston Children's Hospital psychiatric unit accused of suffering from an obscure "mental disorder," Somatoform, which a leading psychologist describes as being "nothing more than a destructive and unreliably applied label." In deteriorating health, and confined to a wheelchair, the 15-year-old learned this week that there will be no pardon from the Massachusetts Psychiatric Puritans.

Because a child's well-being hangs in the balance, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) calls on the Massachusetts State Attorney General to investigate Boston Children's Hospital Psychiatric Unit, "Bader 5," specifically requiring that the treating psychiatrists provide medical/scientific proof of the alleged diagnosis, Somatoform.

CCHR also supports legislative action instigated by Mass State Representative Marc Lombardo to start the process of releasing Justina Pelletier to her parents but said this should be expanded to investigate the harmful influence of psychiatrists' opinions resulting in state removal of children from their families.

* Home Office data suggests the stun guns are used 28 times per day

* Follows growing fears the devices are being misused by officers

* Yesterday, PC Stuart Wright was only told to apologise after he shot blind Colin Farmer with a Taser thinking his stick was a sword

* In December, three teenagers with learning difficulties were Tasered

The use of Tasers by police officers has surged by nearly a third to more than 10,000 deployments last year, new data shows.

Use of the stun gun in England and Wales increased from 8,161 fires in 2012, to 10,380 in 2013 - Home Office figures reveal.

The figure, a 27 per cent increase, is the same as 199 uses a week, or 28 times per day.

The most common use of a Taser in each of the last two years was so-called 'red dot' use, accounting for 51 per cent of fires.

Rioters rampage outside Nigerian 'House of Horror' after skeletons, decomposing human remains found

Scores of rioters went on the rampage on Monday outside an abandoned building in Nigeria dubbed the "House of Horror" after decomposing human remains and skeletons were found there.

At least 20 people were injured and 12 vehicles damaged when about 50 people brandishing sticks and machetes were prevented from accessing the property in the southwestern city of Ibadan, an AFP correspondent said.

The run-down, one-storey house, surrounded by undergrowth and strewn with the rusted hulks of at least five tractors and a dozen other vehicles, has been cordoned off since the grim discovery Saturday.

Police have so far not divulged any theory on how or why scores of skeletons and rotting corpses came to be found there, but black magic rituals are suspected among locals.

Several severely malnourished people were also found wandering in the bush near the building, which is in the Soka area of the city. Reports said at least 15 others were found shackled inside.

Is a college degree worth the time and money?

students
© unknown
Are you thinking of going to college? If so, please consider that decision very carefully. You probably have lots of people telling you that an "education" is the key to your future and that you will never be able to get a "good job" unless you go to college. And it is true that those that go to college do earn more on average than those that do not. However, there is also a downside. At most U.S. colleges, the quality of the education that you will receive is a joke, the goal of most colleges is to extract as much money from you and your parents as they possibly can, and there is a very good chance that there will not be a "good job" waiting for you once you graduate. And unless you have someone that is willing to pay your tuition bills, you will probably be facing a lifetime of crippling student loan debt payments once you get out into the real world. So is college a waste of time and money? In the end, it really pays to listen to both sides of the debate.

Personally, I spent eight years at U.S. public universities, and I really enjoyed those times.

But would I trade my degrees today for the time and money that I spent to get them?

Absolutely.

'Irreversible' societal collapse predicted by NASA models

The end of the world as we know it is coming.

You've likely heard this before, especially from the growing number of voices in the alternative news and preparedness communities. Often dismissed as conspiracy theory or outright lunacy, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests these fringe thinkers may well be on to something.

Despite assurances from most political leaders, experts and researchers who argue that we live in a stable and sustainable world, a new study utilizing mathematical models developed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center may confirm our worst fears.

According to the Socio Economic Synthesis Center, which led the study's research team and was made up of well respected natural and social scientists from various U.S.-based universities, society as it exists today is decades, perhaps just years, from a complete collapse of our way of life.
Given economic strati cation, collapse is very difficult to avoid and requires major policy changes, including major reductions in inequality and population growth rates. Even in the absence of economic strati cation, collapse can still occur if depletion per capita is too high. However, collapse can be avoided and population can reach equilibrium if the per capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable fashion. Film 'Deep Water' shelved over eerie resemblance to missing Malaysia flight

Image
© Daily ExaminerA sequel to the film Bait 3D, pictured, called Deep Water has been shelved over its likeness to the Malaysia Airlines flight disaster.
"Deep Water," a loose follow-up to hit horror movie "Bait 3D," tells the story of a flight that mysteriously crashes into a remote stretch of the ocean on its way to China.

Arclight Films says it's putting preproduction of its upcoming film Deep Water on hold due to some uncomfortable similarities between the project and the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian flight MH370.

"Out of sensitivity to the Malaysia flight situation, we've decided to put it on pause for now," Gary Hamilton, managing director of Arclight told THR at the Asian industry tradeshow Filmart in Hong Kong.

Deep Water tells the story of a flight that mysteriously crashes in a remote stretch of ocean on its way to China. The crash survivors then have to fend off killer sharks.

The film's tagline in early promotional materials reads: "Survivors of a plane crash face terror beyond reckoning as the plane is starting to sink into a bottomless abyss and soon discover they're surrounded by the deadliest natural born killers on earth."

With no other theories or explanation: Missing flight 'ended in the southern Indian Ocean' says Malaysia PM

Malaysia's prime minister said Monday that the missing Malaysia Airlines flight "ended in the southern Indian Ocean."

It has been "concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth," Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said at a press conference.

New satellite data shows that the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 plunged into the southern Indian Ocean.

"This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore, with deep sadness and regret, that I must inform you that according to this new data, Flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean," Razak said.

Malaysia Airlines said in a text message to Chinese families that there were no survivors among the 239 people on board the March 8 flight.

"We deeply regret that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board have survived," the airline said in the text message, according to Russia Today.

Vigilantes harass pro-Russian ribbon wearers in Ukraine

A group of Ukrainian vigilantes have been hunting out people they accused of being "pro-Russian thugs", according to a video which surfaced on YouTube. The "thugs" were detained, frisked, roughed up and handed over to police.

The video was shot in Dnepropetrovsk in eastern Ukraine and shows a group of people wearing paramilitary uniform - some of them masked - run after and catch several people. Judging from the comments heard, those caught are suspected of trying to stage a pro-Russian picket of a police station.

At least two of the people, whom the hunters brand as 'titushki', or hired thugs, were caught and frisked. Both had St. George ribbons on them, a common pro-Russian symbol associated with the Soviet Union's contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

On discovering the ribbons the attackers apparently start to treat those caught more violently. One of them is threatened with a knife while another one gets punched in the face.
