US, Oklahoma: Authorities make 3rd search for remains after discovery of old bones in Comanche County

Comanche County Sheriff's Department investigators have made their third search for additional human remains after the discovery of old bones in a rugged wilderness area north of Saddle Mountain.

The detectives searched Saturday morning as they work to identify the remains. Sheriff Kenny Stradley tells the Lawton Constitution two of his detectives are working with the state Medical Examiner's office and the Oklahoma Crime Scene Archaeology Recovery Group on the project.

A 55-year-old woman clearing tree limbs found a partial skull in June 2010. A second search last December turned up numerous bone fragments near where the skull was found.

Stradley says he's been told the bones might have been at that location for a decade. His office is analyzing details from area missing-person cases from the past 30 years.

Thailand: Gunmen Open Fire in Temple Killing 5-Year-Old Girl and Official

A five-year-old girl and a local government official were shot dead and 11 people were injured in southern Thailand when gunmen burst into a Buddhist temple during an annual fair.

Police said a group of assailants opened fire inside the temple in Surat Thani province on Sunday, killing 52-year-old Songwuth Noppakun in an apparent targeted assassination.

''According to witnesses, four to six gunmen followed the officer into the temple's annual fair and shot him. Then there was gunfight in which innocent people died and were injured,'' Police Colonel Jumnoch Kaewkhao said.

Songwuth was the brother of an unsuccessful election candidate for Puea Thai - the party allied to former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra that won overall in the recent poll - but police believed his death was not political.

At Least Four Dead in Attack on Police in China's Xinjiang

At least four people died when a mob attacked a police station in western China's restive Xinjiang region, taking hostages and setting it on fire, state media said on Monday.

Two hostages, a paramilitary policeman and a guard died in the attack, as well as several of the attackers, it reported. Six hostages were freed.

The situation has now been bought "under control", it said, and a team from the state anti-terrorism office was on its way to the scene. The attack took place in the city of Hotan, state television said.

The Xinjiang government was not immediately available for comment.

Beijing often blames what it calls violent separatist groups in Xinjiang for attacks on police or other government targets, saying they work with al Qaeda or Central Asian militants to bring about an independent state called East Turkestan.

US, Arizona: Some Support Woman Who Assaulted TSA Agent

Some people are applauding a Colorado woman for grabbing a TSA agent's breast during the security screening.

Thursday, 61-year-old Yukari Mihamae was arrested after allegedly grabbing and squeezing the left breast of a female TSA agent at Terminal 4 in Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport.

"The female became argumentative and refused to be screened by TSA staff. During the argument the suspect grabbed the breast of the TSA employee. The suspect admitted to grabbing the TSA agent and continued being argumentative," stated Phoenix Police.

The self-employed businesswoman is now facing a single count of felony sex abuse. She was released from jail on Friday morning.

According to a statement by the TSA: "On July 14 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at approximately 5:32 PM EDT, local law enforcement arrested a passenger for assaulting a TSA officer during the screening process. TSA officers work every day to protect the traveling public, and the agency will not tolerate assaults against its workforce."

Venezuela: Chavez Heads to Cuba, Says Chemo to 'Attack Hard'

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez left home Saturday for Cuba to begin chemotherapy, vowing to win his fight against cancer and calling for his political allies to stay united in his absence.

Before boarding his plane at Caracas' international airport, Chavez said: "It's not time to die. It's time to live."

He stood alongside one of his daughters, Rosa, on the runway while the national anthem played and soldiers stood at attention.

"I'm saying good-bye for some days," Chavez said. He has not said how long he expects to stay in Havana.

"Tomorrow I begin chemotherapy treatment, and we're going to give it everything we've got," Chavez said in a televised speech earlier at the presidential palace. He said the treatment would ensure cancer cells have not reappeared since he underwent surgery last month to remove a tumor.

After thorough medical checks, "no malignant cell has been detected in any other part of my body," Chavez said to the applause of aides and allies at the presidential palace. He added, "There is always the risk of some cells escaping or tending to reproduce, and therefore there's a need to attack hard through chemotherapy."

US, California: Carmageddon: 'Mission accomplished,' says Villaraigosa as 405 Freeway reopens early

Image
© Allen J. Schaben, Los Angeles TimesLos Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, center, and Councilman Tom LaBonge, to his right, join construction officials and members of the media as they wave at the first motorists to travel on the southbound 405 Freeway under the Mulholland Drive bridge after half of it was demolished. The feared "Carmageddon" scenario was avoided in Los Angeles and a 10-mile stretch of the 405 Freeway was reopened ahead of schedule.
'Carmageddon' was avoided, thanks to motorists' cooperation during the 405 shutdown. But authorities are already planning how to deal with next year's closure.

The first drivers roared up the newly reopened 405 Freeway at high noon Sunday, honking horns, kicking up roostertails of demolition dust, arms stretched through open windows to wave at no one in particular.

And so the reprieve from freeway traffic ended early, along with the planned weekend closure that had threatened to unleash "Carmageddon" if not for the public's cooperation.

Contractors had padded the schedule to allow for unforeseen mishaps in tearing down half of the Mulholland Drive bridge before the Monday morning rush, risking enormous fines and public distain under an international spotlight if they were late.

It wasn't needed. The demolition went smoothly, enabling contractors to finish about 17 hours ahead of schedule, pocket an extra $300,000 in incentive payments and win acclaim from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other officials who jockeyed for position in front of television cameras.

"Mission accomplished," the mayor said, beaming as if he had just won a war.

US, Michigan: After Jail Time for Contempt, Alleged Rape Victim Returns to Testify

It's already extremely hard for rape victims to come to court and testify. This alleged rape victim says the only reason she came back was to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

This woman found the courage to come back to court and testify against one of the men who she says beat her with everything from a chair, to a two-by-four and raped her repeatedly before she found a way to escape from this Strasberg Street in Detroit.

That nightmare only continued at a Wednesday hearing , when she claims defense attorney Gabi Silver kept badgering her on the stand insinuating that she brought this attack on herself, causing this victim to snap in court.

"I said just get to the point bitch, it slipped out, it was inappropriate... all the bottled anger" says the alleged victim.
