A tour bus carrying a college's women's lacrosse team to a game went off the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Saturday and crashed into a tree, killing the driver and one passenger and sending others to hospitals, including some with serious injuries, authorities said.

Lacrosse players from Seton Hill University and three coaches were among the 23 people aboard when the bus crashed at about 9 a.m., turnpike spokeswoman Renee Colborn said. It's not clear what caused the crash, but state police were investigating, said Megan Silverstram of the Cumberland County public safety department.

Three of the injured were flown by helicopter to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where one person died, hospital spokeswoman Danielle Ran said. She did not give the conditions of the other two. Officials said all other passengers were taken to hospitals as a precaution.

The bus came to a stop upright on the side of the road with part of its left side shorn off, photos from the scene showed, though it's unclear whether that was from the impact or rescue operation.

Italy tells citizens to be vigilant in India as row deepens

Image
Italy on Saturday warned its nationals in India to be "vigilant and cautious" amid a deepening diplomatic row over two Italian marines who skipped bail while facing trial for murder.

The advice came a day after India's airports were put on alert to block any attempt by Italy's ambassador Daniele Mancini to leave the country.

"In connection with any protests, especially in Kerala state, related to the two sailors, citizens are urged to always maintain a vigilant and cautious attitude and stay away from any crowds," the Italian embassy in New Delhi said in a website advisory.

The warning reflected apparent Italian concern about a potential backlash after Rome refused to return the two marines charged with murdering two Indian fishermen off the southern state of Kerala last year.

Local media reported fishermen's groups in Kerala have staged protests against the decision not to return the sailors while state lawmakers have voiced outrage.

A Swiss couple bicycling in India were attacked and the woman was gang raped, say police. The alleged attack again raises the profile of sexual violence against women in India.

The gang rape of a Swiss tourist while camping with her husband in India puts the international spotlight (again) on sexual violence against women in the South Asia nation.

The attack occurred Friday evening after the Swiss couple had stopped to camp in a forest. They were bicycling in the state of Madhya Pradesh on their way to see the Taj Mahal, in Agra. According to the Hindustan Times, the couple were returning from visiting the Ram Raja Temple, in Orchha.

A group of 7 or 8 men, according to various reports, attacked the couple. According to one report, the husband was held at gunpoint. Another report says the men were carrying sticks. Seven men attacked the couple in their tent and four of them raped the woman, Dilip Arya, deputy inspector general of police, told Reuters. They also stole their valuables."

While 20 men have reportedly been detained for questioning, no one has been arrested.

The woman was treated and released from the Kamalaraje hospital in Gwalior and her medical tests have confirmed rape, police sources told The Hindustan Times.

A Henrico County judge Thursday scheduled a two-day trial in June for an aspiring rap star who, according to a prosecutor, apparently believed that he had to sacrifice his friend to reach stardom.

Henrico Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. denied bond Thursday for Wafeeq Sabir El-Amin, 27, after Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Thomas L. Johnson described El-Amin as a danger to the public and a man who was so overcome with marijuana when questioned by detectives that he could not remember the events of the month in which he committed the alleged crime.

"You are my sacrifice," Johnson quoted El-Amin as saying before he allegedly fired a shot toward his friend's head inside a Henrico home that was to become a music studio.

El-Amin is listed in state records as the registered agent of Break Bread Inc., located in the 1000 block of Athens Avenue just north of Brook and Parham roads.

According to a search warrant, the shooting at the now-abandoned dwelling the night of Dec. 26 occurred after prolonged marijuana use. The victim awoke from a drowsy sleep to see El-Amin pointing a gun at his head and saying he needed to be sacrificed, according to the search warrant.

Shanghai fished another 809 dead pigs out of its main waterway on Friday, bringing the total carcasses found this week to 8,300 in a scandal that has spotlighted China's troubles with food safety.

The swine effluent discovered flowing down the Huangpu river - which supplies a fifth of the commercial hub's drinking water - has added the country's most popular meat to a growing list of food items rocked by scandal.

"As of 3:00 pm today, another 809 floating dead pigs have been fished out," Shanghai authorities said on their Weibo account, a service similar to Twitter.

It gave assurances that authorities had not found any substandard pork products on the market and were closely monitoring water quality.

Argentina activists rally against US Monsanto expansion in Latin America

Argentinians have said no to what they call Monsanto´s "deathly" business in Latin America

In Buenos Aires, the action group "Millions against Monsanto" has led a protest at the House of Cordoba, a province located in the center of Argentina where the US multinational company is developing its biggest regional factory.

According to activists, the construction of the facility has been approved by provincial authorities but no official report on environmental damages has yet been conducted.

Political complicity, leaders of the protest said, is fostering the expansion of Monsanto´s "chain of profit and death": Monsanto sells seeds that are resistant to its own glyphosate-based Roundup, a key herbicide used in Argentina´s "green gold" soybean industry.

Zombie fad: Do we love the undead because we are unhappy with the government?

Zombies have once again become popular, taking over from vampires in mainstream culture. The question remains why zombies have become a fixture of television and in real life with "zombie walks," but according to Sarah Lauro, English professor at Clemson University and zombie expert, zombies have become popular because we are dissatisfied with the government or society.

Lauro is currently writing a book, "Rise Up: Living Death, Slavery, and Rebellion," exploring the nature of zombies with society as well as the recent "zombie walk" fad and has published previous scholarly works on the subject. According to Lauro, people dress up as zombies, "To make visible their dissatisfaction with a government they feel isn't listening to them or an economic system that makes them brain-dead consumers; some do it as a kind of exercise of community, just to show how the collective can be organized and made to participate in an event without any ties to commercialism; many have no idea why they do it, but some play dead, one supposes, just to feel alive."

Michael Moore calls for photos of slaughtered Newtown kids to be released

Image
Schlockumentary filmmaker Michael Moore isn't pleased with the level of outrage or support for stronger gun control following December's massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

To gin this up further, he wants someone to release the pictures of the slaughtered children:
I believe someone in Newtown, Connecticut - a grieving parent, an upset law enforcement officer, a citizen who has seen enough of this carnage in our country - somebody, someday soon, is going to leak the crime scene photos of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. And when the American people see what bullets from an assault rifle fired at close range do to a little child's body, that's the day the jig will be up for the NRA. It will be the day the debate on gun control will come to an end. There will be nothing left to argue over. It will just be over. And every sane American will demand action.
