More Americans are expressing feelings of "news fatigue," with higher levels among Republicans and those who say the media isn't doing a good job.
Americans are becoming increasing exhausted by the avalanche of news -- even more so than during the 2016 presidential election, a survey showed Tuesday.

The Pew Research Center survey showed 68 percent of respondents feel "worn out" by the amount of news they are seeing, compared with only 30 percent who say they like the amount of information they get.

The percentage suffering from information overload is higher than the 59 percent in a similar survey during the 2016 election, Pew found.

More Republicans than Democrats expressed feelings of news exhaustion, and levels were higher among those with an unfavorable view of the media.

The survey of 5,035 adults conducted from February 22 to March 4 found that 77 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents expressed feelings of news exhaustion, compared with 61 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.

Comment: With the mainstream media's reputation for pushing fake news it's no wonder Americans are 'fatigued'.

Polk County detectives arrested 11 men during their latest undercover child pornography investigation.

"Operation Guardians of Innocence II" focused on identifying and arresting those involved in the possession, promotion, and distribution of child pornography.

A total of 660 felony charges were filed against the suspects and more charges are pending.

A former Walt Disney employee, lego builder and Boy Scout parent helper were among the 11 arrested.

"As you know, this is just the beginning - once we serve search warrants and seize the devices that these suspects are using to download and distribute pornography, we will do a complete forensic analysis, and in all likelihood we will be adding on more charges related to the felony possession and distribution of images and videos of children being sexually battered. Most of the images we saw during this investigation depicted children being sexually battered, that we have seen before - which means we haven't yet identified any local child victims, but as always, that is also a part of our investigation" said Sheriff Grady Judd.

US continues its legacy of torture in Yemen as Congress probes military

us torture
Revelations on the use of torture by US intelligence personnel during the George W Bush presidency have been described as one of the "darkest chapters" in US history.

Not only did it erode whatever moral authority the US claimed to have had during the first decade of the "War on Terror," but the egregious mistreatment of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib and Camp Bucca also helped to give birth to the self-proclaimed Islamic State and to re-energise the global jihad movement.

You'd be mistaken, however, if you believed this nefarious chapter in US history started and ended with the Bush administration - and given that the Republican-controlled Congress has voted to probe whether US troops resorted to torture as part of their interrogation of prisoners in Yemen, you can be sure there is still much to learn.

Simon Cowell got a boost in his mental health by ditching his smartphone

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell has confessed he has not used his mobile phone in 10 months for the sake of his 'mental health and happiness'
His phone book is crammed with numbers of the rich and famous.

But if any of the A-listers try to call Simon Cowell, he won't answer - because his mobile is off. And it has been for ten months.

In an astonishing confession, the television mogul revealed he had become so distracted and irritated by his phone that he made himself uncontactable for the sake of his mental health and happiness.

He told The Mail on Sunday: 'I literally have not been on my phone for ten months.

'The difference it made was that I became more aware of the people around me and way more focused.

'The thing I get irritated with is when you have a meeting everyone's on their phone - and I was probably in that place too. You can't concentrate.

Comment: Simon Cowell is on to something. Overuse of smartphones is detrimental to health.

Haitian people's movements protest against neoliberal financial policies

haiti people's protest
On the morning of May 25th, a large group of people's organizations of Haiti mobilized in the capital, Puerto Principe, demanding the fulfillment of an extension agenda of demands from the State and the president Jovenel Moïse.

The mobilization was called by an platform known as "January 22nd Movement", that unites various sectors such as unions, peasants, students and urban fringes. The organizations also participate in the continental and global platforms: ALBA Movimientos and Vía Campesina.

The gathering took place in Chal Sounè, the central point of the city, where the ministries of Finance, Justice and Social Issues, and the Car Insurance Office against Third Parties (OAVCT) are situated. The protesters exhibited posters of rejection to International Monetary Fund (IMF) and protested against the government's attempt to increase fuel prices. An explicit order from government's financial entity is there behind these policies, which for years has been practicing a guardian role in the economy of this small island nation.

UN publishes a scathing report on poverty in the US; they mostly blame Trump

UN special rapporteur Philip Alston addresses a press conference at UN headquarters in Nairobi on February 25, 2009.
The United Nations has released a scathing report on poverty and inequality in the United States. The findings, which will be presented to the U.N. Human Rights Council on June 21, follow an official visit to the United States by Philip Alston, the U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, to investigate whether economic insecurity in the country undermines human rights.

The conclusions are damning. "The United States already leads the developed world in income and wealth inequality, and it is now moving full steam ahead to make itself even more unequal," the report concludes. "High child and youth poverty rates perpetuate the intergenerational transmission of poverty very effectively, and ensure that the American dream is rapidly becoming the American illusion."

The U.N. explicitly lays blame with the Trump administration for policies that actively increase poverty and inequality in the country. "The $1.5 trillion in tax cuts in December 2017 overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy and worsened inequality. The consequences of neglecting poverty and promoting inequality are clear," it concludes. "The policies pursued over the past year seem deliberately designed to remove basic protections from the poorest, punish those who are not in employment and make even basic health care into a privilege to be earned rather than a right of citizenship."

In December, Alston visited seven locations throughout the country-ranging from Los Angeles's Skid Row neighborhood to rural Alabama, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico-to meet with people experiencing deep poverty, along with experts and civil society groups.

A Pietermaritzburg family is battling to come to terms with the grisly discovery of an intruder's body in their garden on Friday after he was mauled to death by their two pit bulls.

The intruder was found early on Friday morning when the family's domestic worker went out into the garden to hang up washing.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said that in the early hours of Friday, two men climbed over the wall of the Scottsville Extension house to commit either housebreaking or house robbery.

Ngobese said the men did not know the family had pit bulls.

After the lengthy bear market, gold could pick up its bullish momentum again, according to VanEck International Investors Gold Fund manager Joe Foster who sees a coming breakout for the precious metal.

The prospects for beaten-down gold stocks are starting to look promising, he claims, citing geopolitical risk, uncertainty around the Trump presidency, and potential inflationary pressure.

"In the next year or two, we are going to be faced with an economic downturn and probably a general stock market downturn that will bring out a lot of the warts in the financial system - and that could propel gold much higher," the internationally recognized expert told US weekly newspaper Barron's.

A Michigan State University staffer has been charged with bestiality for allegedly having sex with a dog. It comes after the college was implicated in the Larry Nassar case and as a former dean faces sexual assault charges.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette brought the charges against 51-year-old health physicist Joseph Hattey on Monday, according to a statement from his office.

Hattey is charged with two counts of "committing a crime against nature (bestiality), a 15-year felony, for allegedly penetrating a dog with both his hand and penis," the statement reads.

It comes after an investigation was conducted by Ingham County Animal Control, in conjunction with the Ingham County Sheriff's Department.

Roger Waters calls for public resistance to government attempts to silence Julian Assange

Roger waters support julian assange

The online vigil for Assange comes in response to his continued silencing by the Ecuadorian government, which cut his internet communications with the outside world at their London embassy on March 28 and began denying him communications or visitors, claiming that his posts on social media put the country’s international relations “at risk.”
Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters showed solidarity with Julian Assange during a concert in Berlin by unveiling a message in red text projected onto a black backdrop, which read "Resist the attempted silencing of Julian Assange," before the start of his concert.

Waters' show of support for the WikiLeaks founder happened as supporters and friends of Assange came together for an online vigil featuring a diverse group of high-profile supporters of all political stripes for the Unity for J /#Unity4J event. They called for the end of Assange's "arbitrary detention" inside of the Ecuadoran Embassy in London and advocated for Assange's freedom and protection.
