Israeli crowd attacks Arab man trying to help people, mistaking him for a terrorist

An Israeli Arab man was beaten by an angry crowd who mistook him for a terrorist amid an attack on a market in Petah Tikva, not far from Tel Aviv. The man was shouting in Arabic in an attempt to warn people during the attack.

Maed Amar was one of six people injured during a shooting and stabbing attack in Petah Tikva on Thursday, although in his case it was not by the perpetrator. The 35-year-old from Kfar Qasim city, reportedly a market worker, was finishing his shopping when the attack happened. He yelled, "watch out, watch out, take cover" in Arabic as he heard gunshots.

"I wanted to warn people, and they nearly killed me," Amar is quoted as saying by Ynet newspaper. One witness told Ynet that the unarmed man did not pose any threat and was beaten "simply because he is an Arab," adding that "it's good they didn't shoot him to death."

In a video from the site of the attack he is seen lying on the ground, while one passersby is reportedly heard saying "kill him." The police managed to pull the group away from Amar.

An Ohio woman who reportedly livestreamed footage of her raping a 4-year-old boy has been arrested.

India Kirksey, 20, has been charged with felony rape, news station WCPO reported. She was arraigned Monday in court, and is being held on a $350,000 bond.

A Cambridge student who tried to burn a £20 note in front of a homeless man has been expelled from the university's Conservative society. He isn't the first student at the hyper-privileged institution to abuse rough sleepers, a charity spokesman said.

Law student Ronald Coyne, thought to be a distant relative of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, was caught on camera dressed in white tie and tails drunkenly trying to set fire to the money, worth almost US$25.

Coyne's actions were condemned by his own mother. The first-year student has been expelled from the Cambridge University Conservative Association (CUCA), for which he served as communications officer.

However, George Clarke, founder of a local homelessness charity, Embrace Cambridge, said Coyne is not the first university student to act cruelly towards rough sleepers.

A man identifying as a Tesla employee claims that workers are seeking union help to improve hazardous work conditions, long hours and low wages. CEO Elon Musk denies the man's credibility and claims he works for the unions.

On Thursday, a man going by the name Jose Moran posted an article on Medium titled, "Time for Tesla to Listen." In the post, the author claims to be a "proud" employee for the past four years at the Fremont plant, where all the Tesla cars are currently made.

Moran claims that most of the 5,000 non-union employees at the plant work "excessive mandatory overtime" and put in a 60- to 70-hour week, and only earn between $17 and $21 an hour, while the average motor vehicle manufacturer earns $25.58 an hour.

Majority of Americans agree with travel ban despite Trump's falling approval rating: New poll finds

A new poll shows that the majority of Americans still support Trump's executive order prohibiting citizens from seven mainly Muslim countries from entering the US, despite a fall in his overall approval rating. The Politico/Morning Consult survey found that 55 percent of respondents approve of the ban, while just 38 percent disapprove. Republicans were most likely to support the ban, at 82 percent, while the majority of Democrats, 65 percent, said they oppose it.

The national survey polled 2,070 registered voters between February 2 and February 4, and has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points. The ban was the most popular of Trump's executive orders, along with his order to revoke federal funds for so-called 'sanctuary cities,' which also enjoyed 55-percent support. However, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals didn't side with the majority of Americans, ruling on Thursday not to reinstate the 'Muslim ban'.

Comment: Trump tweeted: "The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is very real, just look at what is happening in Europe and the Middle-East. Courts must act fast!"

The US Attorney's Office in DC says 146 more people face felony charges related to violence during inaugural protests. So far, 209 people have been indicted for incidents related to Inauguration Day in Washington, DC.

Mass arrests occurred on Inauguration Day when protests in Washington, DC turned violent, resulting in 290 people being led away in handcuffs. Of the nearly 300, 209 people are facing a maximum of 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $25,000 for felony rioting charges.

On Thursday, an additional 146 people were charged with rioting, according to a press release from the US Attorney's Office in DC. So far, 12 cases have been dismissed. Six of the dismissed charges were against journalists who were covering the protests, including RT reporter Alex Rubinstein.

IRS data shows record number of U.S. citizens renouncing citizenship

A record number of individuals renounced their U.S. citizenship or chose to expatriate in 2016, according to data published by the Internal Revenue Service today.

The government agency, a bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department, publishes the names of those individuals in a list each quarter, in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code. Before 2011, less than 1,000 individuals chose to expatriate each year, according to the lists published on the Federal Register. More than 2,300 expatriated in the last quarter of 2016 alone, and this year's total of 5,411 individuals is 26 percent more than last year's 4,279.

The connection between the list of expatriates and the IRS implies a link to tax policy. The U.S. is one of a very small number of countries that tax based on nationality, not residency, leaving Americans living abroad to face double taxation. "The escalation of offshore penalties over the last 20 years is likely contributing to the increased incidence of expatriation," according to the tax attorneys at Andrew Mitchel LLC who track the expatriate data on their International Tax Blog.

U.S.-born British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson - who has spoken out against the U.S. tax code, The Guardian reports - appears on this quarter's list, which was initially released on Wednesday and published online on Thursday.

However, today's list that covers the last quarter of 2016 - the time period after Donald Trump was elected president - is nearly twice as long as the list from the last quarter of 2015.

LA City Council agrees to pay $1.5mn to family of unarmed police shooting victim

The Los Angeles City Council has approved a $1.5 million settlement with the family of Ezell Ford, an unarmed black man who was gunned down by police in 2014. Prosecutors have declined to charge either officer involved in Ford's death.

Though a "conditional" settlement between the city of Los Angeles, California, and Edsell and Tritobia Ford, Ezell Ford's parents, was reportedlyreachedin October, the terms of the agreement were finally approved by the Los Angeles City Council and formally announced on Wednesday, according to reports.

"They're happy this is behind them so can move on with their lives, but this was never about money," Boris Treyzon, the family's lawyer, told the New York Daily News.

New poll finds Americans trust Trump administration more than fake news media

An Emerson College poll found that 49 percent of U.S. voters believe that the Trump administration is "truthful," while only 39 percent feel that way about the news media. Worse, for the so-called "opposition party," 53 percent of those surveyed described the media as "untruthful."

The poll, released on Tuesday, also showed that Americans are divided on Trump's performance so far — 48 percent of registered voters approve of the job that Trump is doing, compared to 47 percent who disapprove.

It a statistic that should not come as a surprise, the poll notes that 89 percent of Republicans approve of Trump, while 81 percent of Democrats disapprove. According to the poll, Trump's "failure to pass the 50 percent threshold" for approval is because of his standing among independents, a group in which 52 percent disapprove.

Trump and his surrogates have been combative with the media, often referring to CNN as "fake news," and bashing the industry in general, labeling it the "opposition party."

Unknown electrical grid problem causes power outage in Brussels

A power cut plunged several neighbourhoods of Brussels into darkness overnight after an unknown problem hit the grid, the Belgian capital's electricity distributor said Friday.

"We are getting electricity again from (grid operator) Elia. We are gradually starting to restore the affected areas," Sibelga tweeted shortly after midnight.

The power outage hit the neighbourhoods of Schaerbeek, Evere and Saint-Josse, in the northwest of the city, at 10.40 pm (2140 GMT), according to a Sibelga spokesman quoted by the Belga news agency.

Five of the 48 high-voltage stations in Brussels were no longer powered by Elia, according to the spokesman.

Radio programmes of the French-language public channel RTBF, headquartered in Schaerbeek, were affected by the blackout.

Various RTBF stations broadcast continuous music instead of their usual programmes.
