Federal judge denies tribe request to block final phase of DAPL

A federal judge has denied the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe's request to block the final phase of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. The tribe had argued that the presence of the pipeline desecrated its sacred land and water.

The final leg of the pipeline is set to be built under Lake Oahe in North Dakota. The Cheyenne River Sioux sought a preliminary injunction against the construction because they use the lake for sacred ceremonies. They argued that the project would interfere with their religious practices.

US District Judge James Boasberg dismissed the tribe's arguments on Tuesday.

"Cheyenne River's religious-exercise claim ... involves a government action โ€” granting an easement to Dakota Access to build and operate a pipeline โ€” regarding the use of federal land โ€”the land under Lake Oahe โ€” that has an incidental, if serious, impact on a tribe's ability to practice its religion because of spiritual desecration of a sacred site," he wrote in his 38-page decision.

New study finds men are increasing their aggressiveness in negotiations with women since Trump election

The election of President Donald Trump may be partly responsible for men taking a hardball approach to negotiating with women. A new study finds that the art of the deal is growing increasingly aggressive from the man's side of the equation.

It's been six weeks since Trump's presidency began, and the cultural shifts are already taking root it seems. The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business examined the way men bargain with women and found that prior to Trump's victory in November, men tended to work things out gently.

But the election may have killed any chivalry, as men were more likely to engage in tough talk, according to the study, which also found that men were less effective for it.

Assistant professor Corinne Low and Wharton doctoral student Jennie Huang were studying how communication styles differ across genders, but accidentally discovered that the election may have caused a major shift in negotiation.

Cop allowed to resign and avoid accountability after video shows him body slam a small girl

A Roseville police officer, who was being investigated after he was seen on video slamming a small teen girl to the ground, has quietly resigned amid the investigation. As the Free Thought Project has previously reported, officers are all too often allowed to resign during investigations as a means of avoiding any form of accountability. It appears that is what's happening here.

In January, Officer Ruben De Los Santos was captured on a high school student's cell phone video slamming down a small teen half his size, Jasmin Darwin. According to witnesses and Darwin, she was trying to break up a fight between her sister and another student when Santos came up from behind her and smashed her into the ground.

In the brief but graphic video, Santos is seen grabbing Darwin from behind and picking her high up in the air before slamming her down on the hard floor. For a moment, Darwin appeared to be unconscious.

EU citizens in Britain could become 'foreigners' - registering them will be biggest 'bureaucratic nightmare' since WWII

The Home Office faces its biggest bureaucratic task since World War II when millions of EU citizens in the UK seek documentation to guarantee their right to live in the country as it prepares to leave the union.

According to experts, Britain could face a "bureaucratic nightmare" ahead of the government's cut-off day, after which EU citizens will no longer be entitled to stay permanently.

Although some suggest the cut-off date may be the same as when Article 50 is triggered, the government is yet to announce exactly when that will be.

Article 50 is the bill allowing Prime Minister Theresa May to kick-start the official process for the UK to leave the EU, and is likely to be enacted sometime this month.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd previously said the current 3.2 million EU citizens living in the UK would need to have "some documentation" so that they could be distinguished from those arriving after Brexit.

New York City reaches new deal over police surveillance of Muslims

New York City's police department has agreed to a new settlement in a lawsuit accusing it of illegally targeting Muslims for surveillance, according to court papers filed on Monday, after a federal judge rejected an earlier deal.

The new settlement gives additional powers to a civilian representative charged with reviewing the department's counter-terrorism efforts.

Arthur Eisenberg, legal director for New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement that the settlement was "even more protective of religious and political freedoms" than the version announced in January 2016.

The civil liberties organization represents Muslim individuals and organizations who sued New York City in 2013 in Brooklyn federal court claiming they were targeted by police surveillance.

Comment: A little more background on these developments:
In a press release, Imam Hamid Hassan Raza, the lead plaintiff in one of the lawsuits, said the revisions "represents important progress, not only for Muslim New Yorkers but for other minorities in New York and beyond. The new additions to the agreement cement the gains that we achieved before, securing our freedom to practice our religion without being afraid of who's watching."

In 2013, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a pair of lawsuits against the NYPD for illegally spying on Muslims, solely based on their religion.

Starting in 2002, three religious and community leaders, two mosques, and one charitable organization claimed that the NYPD mapped Muslim communities, institutions, and businesses in New York City, and spied on Muslims without any suspicion of wrongdoing.

According to the original complaint, the information that was collected by police was put into databases, but it never generated a single lead or led to a single terrorism investigation.

Their claims were backed up by a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of reports from the Associated Press, that found the NYPD was engaged in an illegal spying program that monitored the daily lives of Muslims living in New York.

Both cases were settled in January 2016, when the NYPD agreed to make major reforms to their investigations, including, prohibiting investigations based on race, limiting the use of undercover agents, and installing a civilian representative that would check officers and ensure all safeguards were followed.

The ACLU said it was the first time that any meaningful safeguards were made to prevent discriminatory surveillance of American Muslim communities.

A dog-breeder who killed newborn puppies by stuffing eight in a freezer and beating another with a tin opener should be banned from owning or breeding dogs, a petition says.

Margaret Peacock was handed a 12-week jail term, suspended for 12 months, at Basingstoke Magistrates Court last week. She is allowed to continue to keep and breed animals.

Peacock, 64, admitted three counts of failing to prevent the causing of unnecessary suffering to an animal, according to Metro.

Three million Syrian children know nothing but war and are mentally scarred for life

Children in Syria are showing symptoms of "toxic stress" and "deep psychological scars," after nearly six years of living in a constant state of fear, a new report by the international Save the Children Fund warns.

"When we do activities like singing with them, they don't respond at all. They don't laugh like they would normally. They draw images of children being butchered in the war, or tanks, or the siege and the lack of food", the report titled Invisible Wounds quotes a teacher in the besieged town of Madaya as saying.

Comment: To say nothing of the millions of children who have been scarred, maimed or killed in Iraq, Libya, Yemen - and dozens of other countries the US has implemented humanitarian regime change, coups and color revolutions over the last several decades...

Report finds college campuses in US see increase in white nationalist groups

Anti-hate advocacy groups are concerned about growing recruitment attempts by white supremacist groups on college campuses across the country. The Anti-Defamation League believes that the sudden increase of recruitment efforts is unprecedented.

The ADL is concerned that the surge in reports of anti-Semitic graffiti, racial slurs and other hate-related behavior is the result of white supremacist groups' recent outreach efforts on college campuses.

While some may argue over whether colleges are too liberal, there is another fight potentially brewing on campus. The ADL found that there was a large uptick in reports of hate-related activities on campus and reported 104 incidents since September, with over half occurring since January, the Washington Post reported.

Facebook accused of allowing distribution of child porn to pedophiles

Facebook has been accused of letting sexually provocative pictures of children be published through its network, in pages aimed at pedophiles.

During a 2016 investigation into secret pedophile groups operating on the social network, the BBC discovered a series of pictures seemingly showing under 16s engaging in sexual acts.

But over a year later, many of the explicit images were still available on the network.

The channel said its reporters flagged up 100 pictures portraying the sexual abuse of children to Facebook, through the website's "report button." Only 18 of those images were removed, while the BBC received an automated email from Facebook saying that "community standards" had not been breached by all of the others.

When the BBC contacted Facebook with evidence, the website reported the broadcaster to the police.

"I find it hard to believe that individuals at Facebook had seen these images and made a decision that they were okay and hadn't breached their community rules," said the Children's Commissioner for England, Anne Longfield.

Comment: Interesting how quickly Facebook moved to censor what it considers 'fake news', yet takes such a casual stance against child predators. This is not the first time that Facebook has been called out as a playground for pedophile rings.
