Muzzled: Social media silencing dissenters

corporate censorship
I could not believe my eyes and my ears! Earlier this morning, I decided to watch a video of Facebook, Google and Twitter executives testifying before the Senate Judiciary Hearings about Russia's so called meddling in the US elections last year. I knew this whole thing was nothing but a dog and pony show from the outset; any hearing that focuses on a $100,000 ad buy as a mortal threat to our Democracy while disregarding the billions in dark money that is spent by corporations and non-citizens alike is a farce meant to distract more than it is meant to edify the public.

However, I was drawn to this hearing for one reason and one reason only. Twitter admitted that they actively engage in corporate censorship. In a written testimony, Twitter's general counsel Sean Edgett submitted that Twitter hid 48 percent of tweets using the #DNCLeak hashtag and 25 percent of tweets using #PodestaEmails. In a particularly breathtaking admission of Twitter silencing free speech, Edgett noted:
Before the election, we also detected and took action on activity relating to hashtags that have since been reported as manifestations of efforts to interfere with the 2016 election. For example, our automated spam detection systems helped mitigate the impact of automated Tweets promoting the #PodestaEmails hashtag, which originated with Wikileaks' publication of thousands of emails from the Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta's Gmail account.
Allow me to translate this legalistic prattle. What Edgett conceded is that Twitter uses automated flags and algorithms to prevent various narratives from reaching the broader public. This is 1984 in ways that Orwell could not imagine. Social media sites are the 21st century public square where information is debated and exchanged by society in order to drive our political process. Facebook, Google and Twitter are a lot more than corporations seeking to maximize profits, they are drivers and engineers of public conversations. Instead of being fair arbiters, Twitter and their cohorts are engaging in stealth censorship where they get to decide what is fit to be reported and what should be repressed as fake news.

Comment: Yep. They're all doing it. Welcome to the new "Ministry of Truth". There's so many examples out there of the double standards these social media giants employ that one could write a book on it! See also:

Fresh allegations of sexual harassment at Westminster have emerged, with one of David Cameron's officials accused of groping well-known writer Daisy Goodwin. She says she immediately called out the official, saying: "Are you actually touching my breast?"

Goodwin, who wrote the hit TV show 'Victoria', alleged that the incident occurred after the man "summoned" her to Number 10 to discuss an idea for a television program. Describing what the man did during the meeting "a few years ago," she told the Radio Times: "To my surprise he put his feet on my chair (we were sitting side by side) and said that my sunglasses made me look like a Bond girl.

"I attempted to turn the conversation to turning exports into unmissable TV. At the end of the meeting we both stood up and the official, to my astonishment, put his hand on my breast." Goodwin said she attempted to rebuke the perpetrator by adopting the voice of the famous theatrical character Lady Bracknell from Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. "I look at the hand and then in my best Lady Bracknell voice said, 'Are you actually touching my breast?'" She said the official then"dropped his hand and laughed nervously."

The sex abuse scandal that first hit Hollywood and Westminster has now swept the corridors of Britain's illustrious educational institutions. Former pupils at one of the UK's top girls' schools have said they were sexually abused while studying there.

Two ex-pupils of St Paul's Girls' School in West London have revealed details of their abuse, which allegedly took place between the 1970s and 1990s. Other allegations were raised by people on behalf of friends.

The claims were made as part of the #metoo campaign, which encourages people to reveal current and historical claims of sexual abuse in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein revelations.

The school in Hammersmith, which regularly tops the national league tables for exam results, sent a letter to its alumni to make them aware of the claims raised.

Tennessee human trafficking sting operation: Police shocked by number of men seeking sex with minors

human trafficking
An undercover human trafficking operation conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Brentwood Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and the office of 21st District Attorney General Kim Helper has resulted in mostly felony indictments for 22 men in a targeted effort to identify individuals attempting to purchase illicit sex from minors.

"Yet again, our collaborative effort proves human trafficking is happening every day in communities across Tennessee," said Jason Locke, Deputy Director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. "For years, our state has led the way in fighting this injustice, and we won't stop doing whatever we can to send the message that it has to stop."

During the first three days of the operation in early October, two female TBI Agents posed as individuals offering sex on Backpage.com. During the course of the resulting text or phone conversations, the Agents identified themselves as 14 and 16 years old. Those who were undeterred and still traveled to the location to meet for the purpose of illicit sex included a computer programmer, automotive engineer, construction worker, and a chef.

Lindsey Buckingham's abusive behavior detailed in Stevie Nicks' new book

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham at the 1998 Grammy Awards
Stevie Nicks was nervous. It was 1973, and the then-25-year-old singer and her guitarist boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham were posing for the cover of their first album, "Buckingham Nicks." Their record label had asked the duo to look "sexy," and the bookish Nicks was already feeling self-conscious when the photographer told her to remove her diaphanous white blouse.

She didn't want to do it. Buckingham lost it.

"Don't be a f-king child," the then-24-year-old guitarist snapped. "This is art!"

Stevie Nicks, now 69, is often referred to as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," with more than 40 top-50 hits to her credit, both as part of the supergroup Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. But according to "Gold Dust Woman" (St. Martin's Press, out Nov. 21) - a new biography by Stephen Davis - she did it all despite Buckingham's bullying and abuse.

I'm feeling lucky: Google is being investigated for privacy violation by Missouri Attorney General

The state of Missouri is gearing up for a legal battle with Google.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley said Monday that his office is investigating the search giant over allegations that it violated the state's various consumer-protection and antitrust laws.

Hawley's office sent Google a subpoena on Monday morning demanding "documents and information" about its business practices, Hawley said during a press conference broadcasted on his professional Facebook page (and not the Google-owned YouTube, it should be noted).

Although Google has a standard 30-or-60 day period to respond to the request, it could potentially contest the subpoena, Hawley said.

"This is not a request if they feel like it," Hawley said. "It is a legal obligation that they comply, and I would strongly counsel them to do so in an expeditious manner."

Hollywood: No surprise that filth-peddling industry is filthy on the inside

Harvey Weinstein
Alex, let's go with the category, "Things that I Already Knew" for $1,000.

If news headlines about Hollywood were an episode of Jeopardy, the categories might be:

Actresses Harvey Weinstein Didn't Try to Sleep With

Pedophiles and Perverts

Drug addicts and Dope Dealers

Sex On Screen

Who Said What Curse Words?

Who's Your Daddy

Name That Addict

Crimes That Didn't Get Time

Comment: Despite the religious slant to the above article, the point is solid. How can we be shocked that an industry that essentially peddles filth is being exposed as being filthy on the inside? Despite the fact that "we all know this," however, the revelations of abuse, particularly pedophilia, are shocking no matter how primed we may be for it. See:

Schoolboy who murdered his teacher boasted that he would kill her "for £10" on Facebook

A schoolboy who murdered his teacher boasted that he would kill her "for £10" on Facebook, an inquest into her death has heard. Will Cornick, now 19, is serving a minimum 20-year sentence for stabbing Ann Maguire during a Spanish lesson.

Most of Cornick's classmates at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds did not believe he was serious when he announced plans to kill Maguire in 2014, the inquest was told. One pupil backed down from reporting it when Cornick threatened to kill them as well. Even those who saw the kitchen knife stashed up his sleeve did not think he would actually use it.
