60 cases of female genital mutilation discovered in Swedish school

Up to 60 cases of genital mutilation among elementary school girls have been discovered in Norrköping in eastern Sweden since March, local media reported. Among the cases, 28 girls were subjected to the most severe form of genital mutilation.

The abuse was discovered by health services in a Norrköping school in eastern Sweden, according to a report in local newspaper Norrköpings Tidningar.

Half of the 60 cases were detected in the same year in elementary school. Twenty-eight of these girls were subjected to the most severe form of genital mutilation, when all external genitalia is removed and the genital area is sewn together, with a small opening for urinating left.

Girls exhibiting severe symptoms were the easiest to detect, Petra Blom Andersson, coordinator of the Central Student Health Service, told Norrköpings Tidningar. She added that recurring headaches and severe menstrual cramps were important signals.

"One girl had such severe menstrual pain that she had to be transported from the school by ambulance to the Women's Clinic," Andersson said.

The girls subjected to FMG in Norrköping have been referred to the Youth Health Service, or a women's clinic if they are slightly older, she said.

FGM has no health benefits, while complications can include severe pain, shock, bleeding, tetanus, sepsis, urine retention, recurrent bladder and urinary tract infections, as well as infertility, increased risk of childbirth complications and newborn deaths and other problems, according to the World Health Organization.

The practice has been illegal in Sweden since 1982 and can be punished with up to four years in prison.

Baltimore police officer charged after slitting restrained dog's throat

A Baltimore police officer is facing felony animal cruelty charges for slitting the throat of a restrained dog, and another has been suspended for helping. Officer Jeffrey Bolger also threatened to gut the dog, witnesses said.

"I'm going to [f--king] gut this thing," witnesses heard Bolger say as he got out of the police vehicle, according to the charging document.

The dog, a 7-year-old shar-pei named Nala, had escaped from owner Sarah Gossard's yard on Saturday through an open gate after Gossard had let her out. Nearby resident Sandy Fleischer found Nala and tried to check the dog's tags, but Nala nipped her, causing a superficial wound.

"The dog was more scared of not knowing where it was and being thirsty and disoriented. The dog bit me out of fear because I tried to touch it, which was my fault," Fleischer told told WBAL-TV. The dog was not aggressive, she added.

Fleischer then called police, and officers from the Southeastern District responded and corralled the dog in an empty lot. The officers captured Nala with a long dog-control pole.

Then Bolger pulled out a knife and slit Nala's throat as Officer Thomas Schmidt held her down.

But even before officers killed Nala, they were being cruel, Fleischer said.

"One police officer said, 'Let's get the noose on the dog,' and you could see the police officer twisting and hurting the dog, bringing it to the ground to the point where the dog's face is on the ground. You could hear the dog screaming and crying in pain," she said. "I did see one officer that had been extremely aggressive that did have his knee into her chest that was tightening the noose. It seemed (they were doing it) relentlessly and unnecessarily."

Police agreed the killing was unnecessary, as the dog was contained.

Texas day care investigated for duct taping restless children to sleeping mats

A Texas day care center is under fire after a staffer allegedly duct taped two children to their sleeping mats when they would not go to sleep during nap time.

Lorrie Almquist, of Cresson, Texas, said she was shocked when she received a call Wednesday from the owner of Heart2Heart Montessori Academy in Parker County and learned that her 3-year-old son and another boy had been duct taped to their sleeping mats.

Photos of a different boy wrapped in a blanket and bound to his sleeping pad by duct tape around the legs and chest had been circling among concerned parents Tuesday afternoon, Almquist said. The photos, which did not show the boy's face, had been snapped by an employee at the school who quit her job shortly after, she said.

Though the boy in the photo was not Almquist's son, she received a call a day later from the day care's owner, Pam Decker, who Almquist said took responsibility for the incident, informing the mother that Almquist's son had also been taped down.

"I felt violated and I was irate," Almquist told ABC News today. "I couldn't find any words to say to her. I was so hurt and saddened to think that my child had to go through that."

Almquist said Decker had been complaining for weeks about her son not sleeping during nap time, and had even requested that Almquist buy a weighted blanket to help keep her son down during nap time.

20 year-old Coloradoan charged with attempted murder in machete attack

Summit County law enforcement officials have arrested a suspect in connection with the bloody machete assault on Swan Mountain Road Tuesday.

Tyrus Walter Vanmatre, 20, of Littleton, Colorado, was identified by the victim and charged in the case, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

Vanmatre attended Summit High School, where he played goalie on the hockey team.

He is an aspiring actor and model, according to his profile on the website StarNow, which says, "I am funny, charming, and I learn new things very fast."

Shortly after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, a deputy found an 18-year-old man stumbling on Swan Mountain Road east of Sapphire Point. The man was covered in blood with deep cuts on his face.

He was transported to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco and then airlifted to St. Anthony Hospital in Denver where he underwent surgery.

During the investigation, the victim told detectives he was attacked in the woods by known assailants.

The victim later said Vanmatre drove him to Summit County under false pretenses with the specific intent to kill him.

Vanmatre and the victim arrived at a predetermined location in the woods near Sapphire Point, the victim said, and Vanmatre attacked him with a machete.

The victim said he was able to fight back, escape the attack and hide from Vanmatre.

UN warns Britain over child voodoo rituals, pedophile sex tourists

Hundreds of children are being kidnapped in Africa and bought to the UK for voodoo rituals, a UN watchdog said, also voicing alarm about the number of British pedophiles who prey on children abroad.

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) urged Britain to do more to stop this brutal form of people trafficking.

"We're concerned about reports that hundreds of children have been abducted from their families in Africa and trafficked to the UK, especially London, for religious rituals," Kirsten Sandberg, head of the CRC and a former Norwegian Supreme Court judge, said Thursday.

She said that trafficking for rituals was part of a wider problem where thousands of minors are brought to the UK, who end up being child prostitutes or being sexually exploited.

The CRC advised that Britain should "strengthen the capacity of law-enforcement authorities and judiciary to detect and prosecute trafficking of children for labor, sexual and other forms of exploitation, including for religious rituals."

There have been numerous cases of children who have been brought to the UK from Africa and suffered torture and abuse, often as part of witchcraft rituals, AFP reports.

Victoria Climbie from the Ivory Coast was killed by her own relatives in 2000, who thought she was a witch.

More recently, in March 2012, Eric Bikubi and Magalie Bamu, both from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who moved to London, were found guilty of murdering Magalie's teenage brother, Kirsty.

Homestead - A Florida couple was traumatized after a dozen heavily armed SWAT agents crashed through their front door, flash-banged their cat, aimed rifles at them and searched their home without explanation.

The raid took place in the pre-dawn hours of June 10th, 2014. At approximately 6:16 a.m., Kari Edwards and her live-in boyfriend were intruded upon by men dressed in full SWAT gear and wielding rifles. After smashing down the couple's front door, agents tossed concussion grenades and proceeded into the home.

"They busted in like I was a terrorist or something," said Ms. Edwards.

Confidence in US news media reaches new low

Americans' confidence in the news media has tumbled to fresh lows -- and it doesn't much matter whether the source is newspapers, television or the Internet.

A Gallup poll released Thursday found the level of faith in each of three major news media platforms -- television news, newspapers, and news on the Internet -- is at or tied with record lows, extending a longstanding trend.

Confidence in US newspapers was marginally better than rival media, but dropped to 22 percent in the June 5-8 survey -- declining more than half from a 1979 peak of 51 percent.

For television news, the percentage of respondents with a good deal of confidence was 19 percent, extending the decline from its 1993 peak at 46 percent.

It's a shocking case of animal cruelty at the hands of a Baltimore City police officer. Officials with the department say the officer assigned as an EMS responder slit the throat of a missing 7-year-old shar pei.

Rochelle Ritchie spoke with the dog's owner, who plans to take legal action.

Police say they have no evidence the dog showed any aggression toward that officer. The owner says the dog was not vicious but lost and scared.

Baltimore City police officer Jeffrey Bolger is on the other side of the law after police say he killed Nala, who escaped out of her backyard Saturday morning.

"Our mission in no way condones this type of behavior," said Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez, Baltimore City Police.

Police say Bolger was dispatched to Grundy Street after the dog nipped at a woman trying to read her tags. What happened next stunned everyone, including fellow officers.

The family of Justina Pelletier, the teenage girl at the center of a national parental rights dispute, vows to pursue legal action against the state of Massachusetts for what they say was essentially an abduction of their daughter.

Earlier this week, Massachusetts Juvenile Court Judge Joseph Johnston signed the order for Justina to go home following a 16-month dispute between her family and state officials. Lou Pelletier said in a text message, "This battle has been finally won. The WAR will not be won until we stop this from happening to ALL CHILDREN!!"

Pelletier, said, "It's an unbelievably emotional day... I'm still shellshocked. It has been 16 months of torture, but finally justice is being done."

The first order of business for the family is to get Justina well and evaluate her after her treatment, or lack therof, by state officials. In her sixteen months under the "care" of the state, Justina Pelletier's health deteriorated from being a vibrant figure skater to being confined to a wheelchair, unable to walk on her own. Pelletier says his daughter has "no feeling at all below her hips" and is now confined to a wheelchair.

About a quarter of India's land is turning to desert and degradation of agricultural areas is becoming a severe problem, the environment minister said, potentially threatening food security in the world's second most populous country.

India occupies just 2 percent of the world's territory but is home to 17 percent of its population, leading to over-use of land and excessive grazing. Along with changing rainfall patterns, these are the main causes of desertification.

"Land is becoming barren, degradation is happening," said Prakash Javadekar, minister for environment, forests and climate change. "A lot of areas are on the verge of becoming deserts but it can be stopped."

Land degradation - largely defined as loss of productivity - is estimated at 105 million hectares, constituting 32 percent of the total land.
