An Englishman who mysteriously vanished on holiday more than a decade ago has been reunited with his family after he was discovered allegedly working as a slave on a Welsh farm for the last 13 years.

Darrell Simester, missing since he was 30, has been found in Peterstone, South Wales, where he toiled 365 days of the year while consequently suffering a deformed spine, a hernia the "size of a football," infected feet, missing teeth and starvation.

"I never had one day off in 13 years," the now 43-year-old told British newspaper The Sun on Sunday night. "I was scared what they'd do to me if I didn't stay there."

After his abrupt disappearance in 2000, his tormented parents never once stopped looking for him while plagued by his occasional phone calls from an undisclosed number.

Lebanon's energy minister said on Friday that Israel has the technical ability to draw from Lebanese underwater gas fields, and called for an urgent parliamentary session to define gas exploration plans and bloc parameters.

Lebanon, technically at war with Israel, has warned in the past that it would "use all means" to defend its resource rights if Israel was found to be drilling within its borders.

Gebran Bassil told reporters at a media conference that Israel had discovered an underwater gas field in the Mediterranean sea only 4 km (2.5 miles) away from the border.

Nigeria school attack by unknown gunmen claims 42 lives

Image
Gunmen believed to be Islamists from Nigeria's Boko Haram insurgent group killed 42 people, mostly students, in an attack on a secondary school in restive Yobe state.

Eyewitnesses said some of the victims were burned alive in the attack, in Mamudo town.

"We received 42 dead bodies of students and other staff of government secondary school (in) Mamudo last night. Some of them had gunshot wounds while many of them had burns and ruptured tissues," a Potiskum hospital spokesman told AFP.

Mamudo is some five kilometres from Potiskum, the commercial hub of Yobe which has been a flashpoint in the Boko Haram insurgency in recent months.

"From accounts of teachers and other students who escaped the attack, the gunmen gathered their victims in a hostel and threw explosives and opened fire, leading to the death of 42," Aliyu said.

Nigeria invites the Mossad to train its security forces

Fri, 05 Sep 2008
However, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Nuhu Aliyu, said he supports the alleged security pact with Israeli. He said "They (Mossad) are professionals and they are here to help train our own intelligence agents. I don't see anyway by which their presence in the country poses any threat to our National Security."

Train derails in Quebec, sets off explosions

Montreal train explosion

A train transporting crude oil derailed and exploded early Saturday morning in a town three hours east of Montreal, forcing the evacuation of the town's downtown and flooding a river with crude.

It was unclear Saturday morning if there were any injuries in the town of Lac-Megantic, about 300 km east of Montreal.

Seventy-three train wagons derailed - each carrying 100 tons of crude oil, Christian Blanchet, a spokeswoman from the local environment authority, said.

Blanchet said the explosions destroyed one wagon and three others caught fire, and that crude oil spilled into the Chaudiere River.

Authorities forced about 1,000 residents from their homes Saturday morning and about 4,000 homes were without electricity. A thick plume of smoke could be seen over parts of the town after the derailment, and witnesses told QMI Agency they heard at least six explosions.

Police cordoned off parts of the town and the security perimeter could be extended if investigators who are on site to test the air quality determine that the air is unsafe.

Best of the Web: 4th of July DUI Checkpoint: Drug dogs, Searched without consent, Rights taken away while innocent

The officer orders me to pull over and get out of my car, bullies me around, gets the drug sniffing K-9, lies about me having "Illegal Drugs" in the car, searches without consent, and tells me that it is ok to take away my freedom. All while not being detained. All this harassment because my window was not lowered enough to his preference. I broke no laws whatsoever. All of this on a day that we are supposed to be celebrating freedom and liberty. At the end of the encounter, the officer did not want to give me his name when I asked him. After I repeatedly asked him, he finally gave it to me.

911 Call: Woman terrorized, arrested for buying case of bottled water

Image
On Friday, radio host Rob Schilling revealed the audio of a stunning 911 call placed by one "Ann, Downey," apparently a passenger in the car driven by 20-year-old Elizabeth Daly as Virginia law enforcement from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) surrounded the car. Daly was arrested on April 11, 2013, after she was surrounded by ABC agents who suspected that she had bought alcohol illegally due to her age. In fact, she had bought bottled water and cookie dough. While the officers surrounded the car, the passengers called 911.

The audio of the call is shocking. The women on the call begin crying "oh my God" and "what should we do," asking for help from the 911 dispatcher. Daly later said that she feared the ABC officers wanted to break the windows of the car, and Daly left the scene of the incident at the behest of the 911 operator. She stopped once the 911 operator told her to do so after ascertaining the identity of the people surrounding the car.

The 911 operator speaks with one of the agents on the phone, and the agent says that everyone showed their badges, and that the driver "pulled up and tried to run over people." All charges against Daly have been voluntarily withdrawn. No apology has been issued to Daly or her passenger.

15 Photos from the Tahir Square protests you'll never see in mainstream media

Our interventionist foreign policy is the gift that keeps on giving. Is there any Middle Eastern country that we haven't fucked up yet? Oh yeah - Iran. Give Obama and McCain time. That will be the clusterfuck that destroys the world.

Curiously, a massive wave of anti-Obama sentiment in Egypt has been utterly ignored by vintage media, even though the protests may be the largest in all of human history.

Australian teenage murderer admits he is a psychopath

Image

A teenager who brutally murdered a pensioner told police maybe he was a psychopath, but people have done worse things.

He was being cross-examined on Friday at the South Australian Supreme Court trial of his friend, who has denied murdering 63-year-old Pirjo Kemppainen.

The witness is serving a non-parole period of 15 years after previously pleading guilty to the murder, which occurred when both boys were aged 14.

The crown has alleged that despite the accused youth being across the road when his friend murdered Ms Kemppainen, he too was guilty as he was a part of their joint plan to kill her.

Student ordered to remove cross necklace at Sonoma State University

Standing up: Audrey Jarvis, 19, says she is outraged that she was told to remove her cross necklace
A California college student is furious after her supervisor told her she had to remove a cross necklace she was wearing while working at an orientation for incoming freshmen on campus.

The boss - a university employee - told Audrey Jarvis that 'it might make incoming students to Sonoma State University feel unwelcome' or make them not want to join the group - which plans student events and activities on campus.

The supervisor then told Miss Jarvis, a devout Catholic, that she could keep the necklace on, but she had to hide it under her shirt.

'My initial reaction was one of complete shock,' Miss Jarvis told Fox News.

'"I was offended because I believe as a Christian woman it is my prerogative to display my faith any way I like so long as it is not harming anyone else.

Mom settles suit: Poppy seed bagel led to false positive in hospital drug test

A woman who had her newborn taken away because she failed a hospital drug test after she ate a poppy seed bagel has settled a lawsuit over the case.

Lawrence County's child welfare agency and Jameson Hospital have paid $143,500 to settle the suit filed on behalf of Elizabeth Mort by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, which announced the settlement Tuesday.

Mort sued in October 2010, alleging that a poppy seed bagel she ate shortly before arriving at the hospital spurred a positive test for opiates in April 2010 that prompted the seizure of her 3-day-old daughter, Isabella Rodriguez.

Mort said she was home with her baby when a county child welfare caseworker arrived with an emergency protective custody order and took Isabella.
