University of North Carolina moves to ban 'diversity, equity and inclusion' statements in anti-woke backlash

The University of North Carolina (UNC) moved against encroaching woke culture and voted to ban diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) statements and politically preferential hiring.

UNC voted to ban DEI statements and compelled speech from admission, hiring, promotion and tenure at its Board of Governors meeting Thursday.

The board stated the university "shall neither solicit nor require an employee or applicant for academic admission or employment to affirmatively ascribe to or opine about beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles regarding matters of contemporary political debate or social action as a condition to admission, employment, or professional advancement," according to the resolution. An employee or applicant also can't "be solicited or required to describe his or her actions in support of, or in opposition to, such beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles."

"Practices prohibited here include but are not limited to solicitations or requirements for statements of commitment to particular views on matters of contemporary political debate or social action contained on applications or qualifications for admission or employment included as criteria for analysis of an employee's career progression."

Comment: This is an excellent move. With any luck more universities will join in. DIE is the death of death of competence in a world where it is needed more than ever.

German imports of Russian coal increase throughout 2022 despite sanctions

Germany imported 44.4 million tons of coal last year, an 8% increase from 2021. Europe's strongest economy revived its use of coal for generating electricity amid an energy crisis.

Germany increased its coal import by 8% last year, as it tried to cope with a shortage in the country's energy supply after Berlin stopped relying on Russian oil and gas due to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The country imported 44.4 million tons of coal in 2022, the Association of Coal Importers (VDKI) said in an evaluation covered by the German newspaper Bild on Saturday.

Where did the coal come from?

Europe protests against arms supplies to Ukraine: 10,000 rally in Berlin, port workers march in Italy

A demonstration against supplying Ukraine with weapons for war with Russia attracted 10,000 people on Saturday, drawing criticism from top German government officials and a large police presence to maintain order.

Organised by a prominent left-wing German politician, the protest comes a day after the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which drew promises of more weapons from western allies, fresh sanctions against Russia and shows of support for Kyiv across the globe.

"We call on the German chancellor to stop the escalation of arms deliveries. Now!...Because every day lost costs up to 1,000 more lives - and brings us closer to a 3rd world war," the protest's organizers said on their website.

Comment: Lindner confirms the earlier speculation that anyone not parroting the government narrative, fueling the fire of war, is in opposition to the current government in Germany.

The following report is from a protest that occurred in Italy a week ago, with footage of another protest today:
"From Tuscany bridges of peace not flights of war" is the banner that opened the procession which was attended by a few dozen people from all over Tuscany and which from the Pisa airport marched to the entrance of the military airport to to ask for "a halt to arms shipments to Ukraine and an immediate diplomatic solution to the conflict".

The demonstration took place peacefully with the support of Usb, Potere al Popolo and the PCI, but also of some workers of the Pisan airport and the port of Genoa. "We want to reiterate - said Marta Collot, national spokesperson for Potere al Popolo - our no to war. We are here a year later, when the workers of the Pisa airport denounced the use of the civilian airport for sending weapons, disguised as humanitarian aid. Citizens' awareness is growing ever stronger - continues the spokeswoman - the majority do not want to send weapons and this is also demonstrated by the strong abstention in the last regional elections. We must stop this escalation that is bringing us on the brink of World War III".

According to Cinzia Della Porta (USb Toscana), "we are in the square with the workers to launch the national demonstration in Genoa on 25 February, called by some port workers who played a fundamental role in blocking the shipment of weapons". "We see more and more an increase in containers full of weapons - says José Nivoi, union delegate Usb port of Genoa - the law 185 of 1990 says that it is forbidden to send weapons from Italy to those countries that use the act of war as a final resolution ".

Ukrainian troops have blown up a dam at the Severny Stavok water reservoir in Artyomovsk, the press service of the Wagner private military company told TASS on Saturday.

It specified that "indeed, Ukrainian troops blew up a dam."

Yan Gagin, an advisor to the Donetsk People's Republic's (DPR) leader, told TASS that reports of private homes and cellars being flooded were beginning to come in.

Russia launched an uncrewed Soyuz spacecraft on Friday for a NASA astronaut and two cosmonauts after their original ride back to Earth was damaged by a micrometeoroid impact while parked at the International Space Station in December.

The rescue plan was announced last month. The empty rescue capsule, Soyuz MS-23, blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan early Friday morning and is set to dock at the orbiting lab on Sunday.

NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin were supposed to return to Earth in March, but when Prokopyev and Petelin were preparing for a spacewalk in mid-December, they noticed liquid coolant particles spraying from the docked Soyuz capsule. The spacewalk was canceled, and NASA and Roscosmos later determined the damaged capsule was too dangerous to return the trio.

"Hogwarts Legacy" has successfully cast a spell on gamers, according to early reports.

According to Variety, the game has earned over $850,000,000 and sold over 12 million units since its Feb. 10 release. These numbers have exceeded Warner Bros. expectations, according to Future Game Releases, and the game now holds the record for the biggest video game launch in Warner Bros. history.

Engagement is also high, with "Hogwarts Legacy" becoming the most viewed game in Twitch history with 1.28 million viewers, according to Guinness World Records.

Chaya Raichik, the founder of the anti-woke social media account "Libs of TikTok," is publishing her first kid's book next month.

Raichik, 28, who has spent the past two years tweeting TikTok videos of liberals spouting off about gender identity and other hot-button culture war issues — amassing over 1.9 million followers in the process — says the book is her "next step."

"I wanted to do the next step, which is to give parents and children a tool that they can use to actually be able to spot predatory behavior," she told The Post.

Comment: Bravo! Every tool in the toolbox will be needed to counter-program this generation of kids.

George Alan Kelly, 73, was arrested on charges of first degree murder for shooting Gabriel Cuen-Butimea on January 30 at his home. That charge has now been downgraded to a second degree murder charge.

He denies the murder, insisting he only ever fired warning shots when he saw what he perceived to be a gang of cartel smugglers on his land.

Former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines has previously spoken out in favor of the bill as she condemned the decision to allow transgender athletes into female locker rooms.
Kansas has become the first state to pass a bill that defines 'woman' as someone who is biologically born female in a move that paves the way for banning transgender people from single-sex areas.

Legislators voted in favor of the Women's Bill of Rights on Thursday which has already sparked fierce backlash from the Kansas Senate Democrats who said it was 'equally offensive' to trans and cisgender women.

But Republican Senator Renee Ericksson, who spearheaded the bill, insisted it was a 'very factual' and 'objective' move.

How we know it started in Wuhan

I've been revisiting the evidence of the early spread of the virus in 2019 and the first confirmed cases and I've arrived at what I think is the most likely course of events for how the virus emerged.

To cut a long(ish) story short, it looks like the virus was spreading globally by the second half of November 2019. The bit that was hard to understand was why, if it was in countries all round the world that winter, the explosive outbreaks only began in February and March 2020. Looking again at the reports of the emergence of the virus in close detail, it appears that this is because the virus's journey from first emergence in autumn 2019 to explosive outbreaks in early 2020 occurred in a slower and more staggered way than we might expect from a simple understanding of viruses. This is not because the virus wasn't present in countries prior to causing explosive outbreaks there - that's the simplistic assumption that is contradicted by the data - but because the virus doesn't always cause explosive outbreaks when it is present.

Comment: Remember that just because the virus first took hold and spread in Wuhan doesn't definitively mean the virus escaped from a lab there. There's still the compelling Fort Detrick connection that suggests American soldiers competing in military games in Wuhan were carrying the virus.
