Sochi 2014: Hystericized U.S. warns airlines 'toothpaste bombers' may target Olympics

Toothpaste
The US has warned airlines with direct flights to Russia that explosives hidden in toothpaste tubes could be smuggled onto planes.

The Department of Homeland Security's warning comes on the eve of the Winter Olympics' opening ceremony in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

It said it shared relevant information with partners at home and abroad "out of an abundance of caution".

But it was not aware of any specific danger to the US at this time.

Psychologist explains that "affluenza" is junk science

Last week, 16-year-old Ethan Couch was sentenced to 10-years probation for killing four people and critically wounding two while drunk driving. Although the prosecution sought prison time, the defense argued that Couch himself was a victim and presented psychologist G. Dick Miller to testify that Couch was suffering from "affluenza" - that he lived such an extravagant, materialistic, consequence-free life that he was unable to understand or control his behavior. This is perhaps the first time having too easy a life has been considered a mitigating circumstance. The sentencing has naturally inflamed people's opinions.

Affluenza, in fact, is not a recognized illness. It is not in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) published by the American Psychiatric Association. As a clinical psychologist, I've never before seen a mental health practitioner try to diagnose someone with affluenza. And there is practically nothing in the research literature about it. In the computerized database PsychINFO, the term affluenza is mentioned only 7 times (as opposed to over 101,000 for the recognized illness schizophrenia). Most of these seven were mentions or reviews of books published in the non-academic press. The only empirical research on affluenza was a 2010 study by Peter Lorenzi and Roberto Friedman in the Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management. The authors found little evidence for an affluenza epidemic sweeping America.

Standing Rock Sioux woman dies during propane shortage in sub-zero temperatures

A Standing Rock Sioux member died from hypothermia, authorities believe, due to lack of heat during a propane shortage that recently prompted the tribe to declare a state of emergency. Nearly 90 percent of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation's residents use propane to heat their homes, reported KFYRTV.com.

Debbie Dogskin's adult son, who resided with his mother in the Sioux Village mobile home on the outskirts of Fort Yates, called an ambulance when he found her unresponsive early Tuesday.

When emergency responders arrived, Dogskin's propane tank was empty, and the temperature inside her home matched that of outside, 1 degree below zero. Her portable heater also appeared to be broken, Sioux County Sheriff Frank Landeis told GrandForksHerald.com.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, with results expected on Friday, Tribal chairman Dave Archambault told BismarckTribune.com.

Lack of propane and frigid temperatures have significantly impacted the Midwest, and the problem is exacerbated on the Standing Rock Reservation plagued by poverty and housing issues. Many tribal members can't afford propane, which has nearly doubled in price per gallon. But costs are expected to decrease soon, Mike Rud, North Dakota Petroleum Marketers Association president, told BismarckTribune.com.

Savvy Texas 6-year-old rescued after telling a stranger she was kidnapped

Image

A 6-year-old was savvy enough to use the opportunity in a store restroom to tell a customer she had been kidnapped, leading to her rescue from her abductor and putting the man who confessed to the crime behind bars. But the story of how he was arrested has an unexpected twist.

Houston police say the 6-year-old, Kelly, was snatched Wednesday afternoon at the apartment complex where she lives. The girl's mother was unloading the car, while the girl was looking at ice near the fence of the parking garage. That's when 23-year-old Joaquin Ramos allegedly pulled up his Jeep Cherokee near the girl and walked toward her. According to police, Kelly tried to run away but was grabbed and put in the car. It's not clear based on the police report how much the mother saw of the incident, but she tried to run after the Jeep and was unable to stop it.

Just after 4:10 p.m., the man and the girl were at a local Target store when he allowed her to go to the restroom by herself. That's where the 6-year-old told another customer she had been kidnapped. The customer informed Target employees, who took the girl into their care and contacted the police. The abductor had left the store by the time police arrived.

According to KTRK-TV, the girl was not injured but was examined at Texas Children's Hospital as a precaution.

Later on Wednesday, police obtained security footage from Target's cameras and released images of the suspect.

Outrageous! Florida says mom must prove her dying son can't take standardized test

Standardized testing has become something of an obsession in the United States, but Florida's mandate is under heavy fire while the state attempts to force a disabled, dying boy to complete an exam he is simply incapable of doing.

Ethan Rediske, an 11-year-old Florida boy, is expected to pass away any day now. He was born with numerous ailments, including severe brain damage and cerebral palsy. He's also blind.

On top of these health issues, the Orlando Sentinel reports that his lungs are constantly filled with fluid these days, he's in a morphine coma and all he can do is utter a sound every once in a while.

Despite his current condition, Florida insisted that his mother Andrea provide even more evidence that her son is incapable of taking the standardized test that's adapted for disabled children and required by the state - as well as the US Department of Education.

In a letter obtained by the Washington Post, Andrea Rediske reached out to the school board and to a journalist at the Sentinel hoping to spread the word about her son's situation.

"Apparently, my communication through [the teacher] that he was in hospice wasn't enough [for the school district]: they required a letter from the hospice company to say that he was dying," the letter reads. "Every day that she comes to visit, she is required to do paperwork to document his 'progress.' Seriously? Why is Ethan Rediske not meeting his 6th-grade hospital homebound curriculum requirements? BECAUSE HE IS IN A MORPHINE COMA. We expect him to go any day. He is tenaciously clinging to life.

"This madness has got to stop. Please help us."

Concerned Kentucky mother confronts Obama about losing her health care plan

During a Friday Google+ Q&A session broadcast on YouTube, President Barack Obama was confronted by a Kentucky mother who says she lost her health care plan and her son's medical specialist due to Obamacare.

"I'm probably not the only one whose had really a panicked experience lately trying to figure out if my 10-year-old son can continue with his specialist or not," the woman, Rebecca, said. "I know that I can't keep my plan - which I liked - but as I'm trying to figure out what to do going forward, I've spent weeks with days on the phone getting confidently delivered wrong answers, conflicting information."

"It's becoming quite obvious to me that a lot of agencies, almost everyone I've talked to, is having a lot of trouble figuring out the new rules," the mother continued.

She expressed concern that some average Americans who haven't put in as much "leg work" as she has are going to have an even harder time figuring out the new regulations.

KMFB-TV reported that the firefighter got into a dispute with an officer about where fire engines should be parked at a crash site on Interstate 805.

Authorities said the officer told firefighters to move three engines from the fast lane but only two complied.

The other firefighter refused and continued giving aid to victims of a rollover crash, the station reported.

The station shot video that showed the California Highway Patrol officer handcuffing the firefighter, identified as 36-year-old Jacob Gregoire, as emergency crews and police assist the victims.

The 12-year veteran firefighter was held in the back of a CHP cruiser for a half hour before he was released, the station reported.

Cops chemical spray and tackle young man asking for a spare nickel to board train

Image
Since when did simply asking a question justify police brutality?

A 21-year-old man is considering legal action against the Metro Transit Police in Washington D.C. after he was hit in the face with a chemical spray in November for panhandling at the Dupont Circle Station, Fox 5 reported.

Damian Barnes had just begun a new job in the city's Dupont Circle neighborhood when on his way home via the Metro, he put his smarTrip card into the machine to discover he only had 15 cents left on the card.

After adding the dollar bill in his pocket to the card value he learned he was still a nickel short, caught by video footage, so he began asking customers for a coin.

"Knowing that it's only five cents, I'm quite embarrassed to even ask. So I'm keeping my distance away from people, 'Do you think maybe you can spare a quarter or five cents, so I can get home?" Barnes told Fox 5 he asked.

The video surveillance than shows a Metro Transit Police officer arriving on the scene and having a brief conversation with Barnes. The officer then is seen applying chemical spray to Barnes' face and tackling him to the ground.

Woman executed in Texas for 1998 torture killing

Image
© Texas Department of Criminal Justice / AP PhotoThis handout image provided by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice shows capital murder defendant Suzanne Basso. On Wednesday, Feb 5, 2014 Basso, 59, is scheduled to die for for the torture slaying of Louis “Buddy” Musso, a mentally impaired man near Houston more than 15 years ago.
A woman convicted of torturing and killing a mentally impaired man she lured to Texas with the promise of marriage was put to death Wednesday evening in a rare execution of a female prisoner.

The lethal injection of Suzanne Basso, 59, made the New York native only the 14th woman executed in the U.S. since the Supreme Court in 1976 allowed capital punishment to resume. Almost 1,400 men have been put to death during that time.

Before being put to death, Basso told a warden who stood near her, "No sir," when asked to make a final statement. She appeared to be holding back tears, then smiled at two friends watching through a window. She mouthed a brief word to them and nodded.

As the lethal dose of pentobarbital took effect, Basso, dressed in a white prison uniform, began to snore. Her deep snoring became less audible and eventually stopped.

She was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m. CST, 11 minutes after the drug was administered.

Basso was sentenced to die for the 1998 slaying of 59-year-old Louis "Buddy" Musso, whose battered and lacerated body, washed with bleach and scoured with a wire brush, was found in a ditch outside Houston. Prosecutors said Basso had made herself the beneficiary of Musso's insurance policies and took over his Social Security benefits after luring him from New Jersey.

Welsh cop awarded half a million quid compensation 'for ridicule he suffered at hands of colleagues' after he smashed in pensioner's car window - disabled victim received £20,000

Image
Former PC Mike Baillon was awarded more than £400,000 compensation at a Cardiff hearing today. He says he had to leave Gwent Police over ridicule from this video of him attacking a Range Rover

A police officer who chased and then smashed a pensioner's car window has won £440,000 after a tribunal found he left his job after becoming a "laughing stock" among his colleagues when a video of the incident appeared online.

Mike Baillon, who has now left the police, said he was ridiculed by fellow officers on a daily basis after video of him smashing the window of a car driven by 74-year-old disabled pensioner Robert Whatley went viral.

He took his former force, Gwent police, to a tribunal saying he had been constructively dismissed and had been removed from front line duties after the incident. The tribunal awarded him £430,000 for the loss of pension he would have got had he retired after 30 years service, plus £10,000 for the wages he lost since leaving the force.

In 2009, police stopped Whatley for not wearing a seat belt as he drove a range rover near Usk, South Wales.

Whatley was being issued with a fixed penalty notice by police when he drove off. He claimed he thought the officers had finished, and he wanted to get home and take medication for his heart and for a stroke he had suffered.

A police car pursued Whatley as he drove through country lanes for over 15 minutes, with sirens blaring.
