Close to 450 extremist Arab and foreign nationals have arrived in Ukraine from Idlib to fight against Russia's forces, less than only three days after they left Syria, passing through Turkey.

Relatives of extremists that have arrived in Ukraine told Sputnik that senior fighters from terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (the rebranded version of Jabhat Al-Nusra, i.e Al-Qaeda) have held a number of meetings with senior leaders in the Turkistan Islamic Party group and Ansar Al-Tawhid and Hurras al-Din groups, and agreed on allowing a number of all their fighters to enter Ukraine through Turkish soil.

The sources added that most of these foreign fighters are veterans of the Syrian war, had been causing issues in Idlib, and were given this opportunity to fight against Russia as a compromise by which they would receive a new start and with an acceptable income.

Russia sanctions 'to cut UK living standards by £2,500 per household'

Centre for Economics and Business Research halves growth forecast and says inflation expected to remain at 7% until 2023.

The shockwaves from the Russian invasion of Ukraine will cut UK living standards by £2,500 per household, lead to more persistent inflationary pressure and slow the economy to a standstill next year, economists fear.

Following reports of an escalation of the west's economic measures against the Kremlin, forecasters have cut their estimates of growth in 2022 and 2023 and become gloomier about the outlook for the cost of living.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research consultancy said the prospect of living standards taking their biggest hit since records began in 1955 would put pressure on the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, to announce fresh help in his spring statement on 23 March.

EU tells citizens to lower heating

The European bloc has pledged to be entirely free of its dependence on Russian gas before 2030

The European Union's (EU) High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell has asked citizens to turn down the heating in their homes, as one way for the bloc to cut its dependence on Russian gas amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Borrell suggested:
"The challenges we face are going to require a very tough stance and we have to be willing to pay the price. European citizens lower the heating of their homes," as part of their "individual effort to cut gas consumption."
The statement from the EU official comes after the bloc unveiled a new round of sanctions against Russia and Belarus over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The new restrictions cut off a number of Belarusian banks from the SWIFT network, hit the Russian maritime sector, and impose restrictions on 160 Russian lawmakers and business people.

"To prevent World War III and an attack on Russia with nuclear weapons, the Russian government decided to neutralize the threat and restore order in Ukraine" - former Ukrainian P.M. Azarov
A former Prime Minister of Ukraine, Nikolai Azarov, released a message on Facebook claiming that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was planning a nuclear attack on Russia. In response to their potential attack, Russia decided to stop the situation and restore order in Ukraine.

"NATO wanted to unleash a third world war by using nuclear weapons against Russia," Azarov stated. "Since December 2021, Russia has been receiving information about NATO plans to deploy four military brigades (2 land, one navy, one air) on the territory of Ukraine." One of those brigades could carry nuclear warheads.

World War III

NATO wanted to deploy troops in the summer of 2022. "In order to prevent the Third World War and the attack on Russia with the use of nuclear weapons, the Russian government decided to stop this situation and restore order in Ukraine," writes Azarov, who served as prime minister in 2004, 2005, and 2010.

Stephen Colbert says he'll pay $15 a gallon because he can afford to drive a Tesla... what about the working class?

Late night talk show host Stephen Colbert said he is willing to pay $15 a gallon for gas because he drives a Tesla during a Monday episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."

"Since the invasion, oil prices have skyrocketed. Today, the average gas price in America hit an all-time record high of over $4 per gallon. Okay, that stings, but a clear conscience is worth a buck or two," Colbert said. "I'm willing to pay. I'm willing to pay $4 a gallon. Hell, I'll pay $15 a gallon because I drive a Tesla."

Colbert joked about the U.S.' reported plan to ban imports of Russian oil, saying we will instead purchase it from "the good guys, Saudi Arabia."

Hong Kong health authorities reported today on two fatal human cases of avian influenza A(H5N6) in the Mainland from last year.

The first case involves a 12-year-old female living in Liuzhou in Guangxi, who had visited a live poultry market before onset. She developed symptoms on November 17 last year and was admitted for treatment on November 20. She passed away on December 4.

The second case involves a 79-year-old man living in Liuzhou in Guangxi, who had visited a live poultry market before onset. He developed symptoms on November 18 last year and was admitted for treatment on November 22. He passed away on December 3.

Comment: Bird flu transmission to humans seems to be relatively rare, and mortality from infection seems to be even rarer.

However it is notable that, at least according to the authorities, there is currently a near global bird flu problem which they're tackling with rather stringent containment measures: See also: 450,000 pigs culled since African Swine Fever outbreak reported in South Korea (August 2021)

The legality of Russia's military operations in Ukraine

Vasily Alekseevich Nebenzya
Vasily Nebenzya
The western mass media and governments have fallen into a frenzy of anti-Russian propaganda over Russia's military operations in Ukraine. One element of their propaganda war is the claim that Russia's action is illegal under international law. But is this the case and what does it mean for these countries to make that claim when they have themselves invaded and attacked too many nations to enumerate, every one of which was not only illegal, but without any moral, ethical justification whatsoever?

The law on the use of force in international relations has two aspects, codified international law as set out in the Charter of the United Nations, and the commonly understood right to self-defence.

The UN Charter is the primary document governing the use of force. Nation states do not have a right to use force in relations with other sovereign states except in very limited circumstances. It used to be, before the twentieth century, that there was an understanding that all nations had the right to use force, to go to war to ensure their interests. But the cataclysms of World War I and World War II led in each case to an attempt to prevent wars of aggression.

After WWI the League of Nations was created, supported by the Kellogg-Briand Pact of 1928, which I have referred to in previous articles, a Treaty still in effect, in which the USA and Soviet Union and all other nations promised never to use war to solve political disputes. The League of Nations fell apart in the 1930's with the rise of fascism and the aggressions of Italy and Germany. But the Kellogg-Briand Pact still exists.

Comment: Western hypocrisy knows no bounds, as we have clearly seen over and over again.

Several Russian television channels have been hacked and had their programming substituted with coverage of the war in Ukraine by independent broadcasters Current Time and Dozhd TV, outlets blocked in Russia by the authorities.

Twitter accounts historically associated with Anonymous, the amorphous online activist community that first grabbed global attention about a decade ago, claimed it was behind the hacker attack.

Among the television channels impacted were Russian streaming services Wink and Ivi, a service similar to Netflix, and live broadcasts at the TV channels Rossia-24, Channel One, and Moscow 24, the hackers' group said on Twitter.

Popular Canadian snack targeted for resemblance to Putin

French Canadian restaurants are rushing to rename the ultra-popular snack poutine, concerned that its name's resemblance to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin will upset customers caught up in a jingoistic frenzy over the war in Ukraine.

Poutine, an artery-clogging delicacy consisting of potato fries topped with cheese curds, gravy, and mayonnaise, was invented in Quebec in the 1950s and has since become ubiquitous in the Canadian province. 'Poutine' also happens to be the way the Russian president's name is transliterated into French from the Cyrillic alphabet. The confusion apparently has some restaurant patrons frothing mad.

La Maison de la Poutine, a restaurant with locations in France and Quebec, revealed in a tweet last week that it had received insults and threats from the public just for sharing the name of its signature dish with the Russian president.

In a video of the Wednesday afternoon roadside arrest broadcast to Facebook by Dawid Pawlowski, law enforcement officers pull Dawid over for what appears to be a routine roadside check for commercial vehicles before taking him away. Dawid was in what he called a church vehicle and remarks in the video that he was "checked for alcohol" and passed.
