Freedom Convoy organizer Tamara Lich wins review, granted bail

Tamara Lich
Tamara Lich, one of the organizers behind the Freedom Convoy, has won an appeal and will now be granted bail.

Initially taken into custody by police in Ottawa on the evening of Feb. 17, Lich has remained behind bars since. At a previous bail hearing on Feb. 22, Lich had her request for bail denied by Justice Julie Bourgeois, a former Liberal Party candidate who Lich accused of holding a political bias in the case.

Late week, Lich was back in front of a judge requesting a bail review, a hearing that was documented by Ottawa-based lawyer David Anber.

Today, a judge reversed the original decision and granted Lich bail.

Lich -- described by a lawyer for convoy protesters in February as "the spark that lit this fire" -- was one of the most public faces of the protest that saw crowds move in with big-rigs and other vehicles in late January to protest the federal Liberal government, vaccine mandates and COVID-19 restrictions.

Since her arrest, her supporters have called her a political prisoner during her time in jail, and over the weekend some rallied outside the Ottawa jail where she is being held to demand her release.

That push reached all the way to the United Kingdom Monday, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in London for meetings with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was greeted outside 10 Downing Street by protesters spewing a chorus of expletives, and waving signs demanding that Lich be freed.

Lich was initially denied bail on Feb. 22 after Ontario Court Justice Julie Bourgeois deemed her detention was "necessary for the protection and safety of the public."

In a bail review hearing last week, Lich's lawyer argued that decision may have been tainted by the fact that Bourgeois ran as a federal Liberal candidates in the 2011 election and expressed that her own community had been affected by the protest.

On Monday, Superior Court Justice John M. Johnston found no merit to those arguments, and said the case was not about politics but the rule of law.

But he did find several other errors of law in that decision. He said the previous justice was too subjective when assessing the gravity of the offences, weighing them against the impacts to Ottawa's residents rather than objectively comparing them to other offences in the Criminal Code. He also said that while Bourgeois determined Lich could serve a lengthy prison sentence of up to 10 years, he thought it very unlikely she would serve more than two years if convicted.

Orwell strikes again: Cardiff Philharmonic removes Tchaikovsky from program over Ukraine

Tchaikovsky
The Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra has removed Tchaikovsky from its programme of its upcoming concert 'in light of the recent Russian invasion'.

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture was due to be included in the orchestra's upcoming all-Tchaikovsky concert at St David's Hall on 18 March, but it was considered by the orchestra 'to be inappropriate at this time'.

The 1812 Overture was written to commemorate the successful Russian defence against Napoleon's invasion in 1812, featuring cannon fire, chimes and a brass fanfare. The piece was due to be performed alongside another militaristic work by Tchaikovsky: his 1876 Marche slave, written to celebrate Russia's involvement in the Serbian-Ottoman War. The composer's Second Symphony was the final piece in the programme.

German spy agency may surveil far-right AfD party, court rules

afd party
A German court on Tuesday ruled the domestic spy agency was justified in placing the Alternative for Germany (AfD) under surveillance on suspicion of being a threat to democracy, rejecting a complaint by the far-right party.

The radical nationalist faction of the AfD, known as the "The Wing", had been formally dissolved but its protagonists continued to exert influence within the party, said the court in the western city of Cologne, where the spy agency is based.

A policy goal of The Wing as well as the AfD youth organisation the Young Alternative was to protect the ethnic integrity of the German people and keep out "foreigners", the court said. This was at odds with Germany's democratic constitution.

The court said it also detected agitation against foreigners within the anti-immigration party.

German politicians talk of rationing heating gas... all for a 'good cause'

elderly heating
Germany "gets more than half of its natural gas needs from Russia" and "almost half of all German households heat their apartments and houses directly and many more indirectly via district heating." reports German energy site Blackout News here.

But to punish Russian president Vladimir Putin, German leaders are now calling on citizens to endure pain by cutting back on their consumption of natural gas to heat their homes and cook their food. Already there's talk of rationing natural gas over the coming winter, and German politicians are desperate to find a way to explain it. "If you want to harm Putin a little, save energy," said German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens party).

"Of course, 'freeze to hurt Putin' sounds better than 'government rationing gas," writes Blackout News, which expects Russian gas supplies will eventually be halted and rationing inevitable. The construction of liquefied gas terminals in Germany that has been announced will take years to complete.

The leader of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group was arrested Tuesday on a conspiracy charge for his suspected role in a coordinated attack on the U.S. Capitol to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 electoral victory.

Proud Boys former chairman Henry "Enrique" Tarrio wasn't there when the riot erupted on Jan. 6, 2021. Police had arrested Tarrio in Washington two days before the riot and charged him with vandalizing a Black Lives Matter banner at a historic Black church during a protest in December 2020. The day before the Capitol was attacked, a judge ordered Tarrio to stay out of Washington. He later served a five-month sentence in that case.

The new riot-related charges are among the most serious filed so far, but they aren't the first of their kind. Eleven members or associates of the anti-government Oath Keepers militia group, including its founder and leader Stewart Rhodes, were charged on Jan. 12 with seditious conspiracy in the Capitol attack.
