Hazing rituals at Hofstra's Sigma Pi fraternity revealed, including induced vomiting, hot sauce, swastika and a cage

hofstra hazing

Photo sent to Sigma Pi’s national organization allegedly shows student covered in hot sauce, blindfolded and kneeling in front of swastika.
Photo and video evidence allegedly depicting rituals of the Fall 2014 and Fall 2015 pledge processes for the Sigma Pi fraternity at Hofstra University show pledging members were made to chug milk and vomit on one another, stay locked in a small cage and kneel blindfolded while their bodies were covered in hot sauce, among other hazing rituals performed at an off-campus residence.

The Grand Council of Sigma Pi Fraternity International revoked the charter for Hofstra's Eta-Gamma chapter of the organization effective March 1, 2016, according to a letter dated March 2. A semester-long investigation by The Chronicle has uncovered evidence of a culture of hazing within Hofstra's chapter that spans three semesters (Fall 2014, Spring 2015 and Fall 2015) and includes forced favors, a merit and demerit system and anti-Semitic imagery.

The letter sent by the national organization said, "The Executive Office suspended chapter operations upon receiving evidence of violations of both Fraternity and FIPG [Fraternal Information and Programming Group] risk management policies. The University followed with a suspension of the Chapter through the University as well. After an investigation, Eta-Gamma Chapter was found to be in violation of Sigma Pi's standards."

A former student and member of Sigma Pi's Spring 2015 Beta-Alpha class, Syed Ali John Mehdi, sent an email to national Sigma Pi Executive Director Jason Walker, and Director of Business Operations Jen Wyatt on March 1, according to a record of the transaction. Included in the email is a brief description of the "extreme hazing" Mehdi claimed he faced, as well as several photos and videos depicting certain rituals.

Journalists struggle to define 'fake news' while they declare war on it

Fake journalists
In the weeks following Donald Trump's unexpected victory in last month's election, liberal journalists have launched an all-out assault on "fake news," which some have blamed for the disconnect between political journalists and everyday Americans.

But many of those same journalists seem unable to agree on a consistent definition of what "fake news" is, oftentimes pushing leading conservative and alternative media organizations that provide ideological balance in the public forum under the same "fake news" umbrella alongside websites whose entire purpose is generating viral hoaxes.

Oliver Stone interview: Mass surveillance exposed by Snowden is about control - not counterterrorism (VIDEO)

Stone on Snowden
The majority of the US public is not aware of what exactly was exposed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden because media coverage focused on the messenger, not the message, the director of the biopic 'Snowden', Oliver Stone, told RT.

"[Snowden] wanted the emphasis to be on the message, not the messenger. He was wrong because the world was more interested in 'kill the messenger, kill the message'. The US went heavily on Snowden and called him a traitor, profiled him as a spy or a low-level NSA guy - it's not true," the Academy Award-winning director and famous documentary filmmaker told RT's Going Underground program.

Snowden became a world-renown figure after leaking classified documents detailing the surveillance programs of the US intelligence agencies and its allies in 2013. Stone met him in person in Russia, where Snowden was granted political asylum.

"People don't understand what he did," Stone said. "The datamining that we are doing as a country was missed by the general public. They think it's about their iPhone only, or their computer. But it's a small part of the equation."

Violent clashes between Brazilian military police and unpaid civil servants erupted in front of the legislative building in Rio de Janeiro, while legislators discussed new budget cuts. Several people from both sides were reportedly injured.

A crowd of some 300 protesters, predominantly civil servants, gathered outside Rio de Janeiro's legislative assembly (ALERJ) on Tuesday, while lawmakers voted on new austerity measures to mend gaping holes in the city's budget.

Protests quickly spiralled out of control, as participants tried to push down a fence surrounding the building and erect makeshift barricades. As a result, military police arrived at the scene.

Police officers fired less lethal weaponry and used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd, while protesters threw rocks at police. Police officers reportedly entered a nearby church and fired at the crowd from inside. Local church authorities called it an "invasion" and promised to investigate the incident.
