Chicago PD sued over 'Stingray' surveillance of attorney and activists during 2015 MLK Day protests

The Chicago Police Department used a cell-site simulator, or "Stingray" device, to surveil citizens and activists in 2015, amounting to a warrantless, unconstitutional search, a new federal lawsuit filed by a Chicago attorney has alleged.

Jerry Boyle, an attorney and legal observer with the National Lawyers Guild, filed the federal lawsuit on Thursday, naming as defendants the City of Chicago and various former and current officials with the Chicago Police Department.

The Harris Corporation's "Stingray" is the most well-known brand of the controversial spying technology, used by the FBI, the Secret Service, the Drug Enforcement Agency and many state and local police agencies. By impersonating cell towers, the cell-site simulators compel phones in an area to broadcast information that can be used to identify and locate users. The devices are able to indiscriminately collect and intercept data, including the content of voice and text communications, from several phones at once.

Nicole Kidman: A celebrity with common sense regarding Trump and the elections

Nicole Kidman
Unlike comedian Rosie O'Donnell and the vast majority of her elitist peers in Hollywood, actress Nicole Kidman strongly believes that Americans need to support President-elect Donald Trump.

"I just say (Trump's) now elected, and we as a country need to support whoever's the president because that's what the country's based on," she said recently during an interview with the BBC, as reported by The Washington Times. "Whatever, however that happened, he's there and let's go."

Kidman, who was a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund, added that her concern lay with more specific issues — likely those concerning young children.

RT editor-in-chief mocks hysterical claims RT hacked C-SPAN: "Do you now see the long arm of RT?"

Editor-in-Chief of the RT (Russia Today) television channel Margarita Simonyan
RT's editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan criticized the mainstream media for a "hysterical" reaction to a broadcasting error on Thursday, when the RT transmission suddenly cut into a live feed of C-SPAN, the American public service network.

C-SPAN said that the incident was the result of an "internal routing error," but not before dozens of media outlets reported that the channel may have been "hacked," and made links to recent mentions of RT in the ODNI report on Russia's influence in the past US presidential election. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who was addressing the House of Representatives when the 10-minute interruption occurred also called the incident "odd" and "strange."

"I am starting to believe that Russian hackers have infiltrated the heads of the US establishment," Simonyan told RIA news agency. "C-SPAN itself has already said the feed interruption was an internal malfunction, but mainstream media is still going into hysterics saying we hacked them. Our newsroom ran out of popcorn watching this unfold."

"Now do you see the long arm of RT?" Simonyan, who has overseen RT since it began broadcasting in 2005, posted on her Russian-language Twitter.

A seven-page annex in the declassified version of the ODNI report were dedicated exclusively to the growing influence of RT, focusing on its coverage of issues as diverse as Occupy Wall Street and fracking, as well as accusing it of one-sided anti-Hillary Clinton coverage of the 2016 election.

Nightmare at LAX: Water main break leaves passengers without bathrooms and clean drinking water

Travelers inside Los Angeles International Airport's Terminal 5 for arrivals are without bathrooms and hot food, following a water main break. Airport personnel are handing out water, as people wait for portable toilets to be delivered. Concession stands have been ordered to serve only pre-packaged food.

Maybe Friday the 13th wasn't the best day to be at LAX. At 10:30am Pacific time, a water main broke near the lower level of Terminal 5, which is reserved for arrivals.

As of 4:10pm Pacific time, construction equipment was still on its way to conduct repair operations, Frederick Badlissi of the airport's press office told RT. There were no delays reported, but the airport tweeted that travelers should expect "slight delays."

How to reduce violence in America

Pistols guns
Hardly a day goes by without someone calling for gun control as the way to reduce violence in America.

The gun control advocates have it all wrong. That's because they are attacking the symptom of the problem rather than the cause of the problem. That's not going to do any good and, in fact, might well make the situation even worse.

Comment: Those are two interesting, possibly useful ways to address violence. Let's not forget about other factors such as video games that promote violence and killing.

This is a case like we have not seen in this country in a long time," Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams told today's press conference.

Brain Dead? Rosie O'Donnell wants martial law!

Rosie O'Donnell
© Another Day in the Empire
According to celebrity Rosie O'Donnell, if democracy works and the electoral system elects somebody you hate, it's OK to subject Americans to martial law.

Rosie might want to do a little research. Martial law imposed by the military usually includes the suspension of civil law, the Constitution, habeas corpus, and civilians are subjected to military tribunals. Is this what O'Donnell wants?

Is this what she believes her fellow citizens deserve because they voted for a candidate she hates?

Rosie O'Donnell and her fellow Hollywood travelers have shown their real colors since the election. Authoritarianism and military rule are OK so long as it stops a president voted into office by the American people.

American's level of personal satisfaction at a 16-year high

thumbs up America
Man, do we feel great. Just ask.

Gallup did and they report Friday that "personal satisfaction" is at a 16-year high, 87 percent.

"As 2017 begins, Americans are more satisfied with their personal lives than they have been in a decade. Eighty-seven percent say they are satisfied with their own life, including 57 percent who are very satisfied. Both figures have improved since dipping during the recession and are at or near pre-recession levels," said the polling outfit.

House approves budget measure, opens door to repeal of Obamacare

The US House of Representatives has approved a budget measure that opens the door for a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Getting rid of the healthcare mandate was one of President-elect Donald Trump's top campaign promises.

The Republican majority advanced the repeal through Concurrent Resolution 3, a reconciliation measure setting budget levels for fiscal years 2018 through 2026. These measures are immune to filibusters, and require only a regular majority to pass. The final vote was 227 in favor to 198 opposed, with only 9 Republicans breaking ranks.

The bill has already moved through the Senate, which approved it on Thursday in a 51-48 vote. Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) was the only Republican dissenting.

"My colleagues, this experiment has failed. This law is collapsing as we speak," House Majority Leader Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) said on Friday during the debate on the House floor. "This is a rescue mission," he added.

Democrats have criticized the Republicans' push to repeal Obamacare, saying they have no plan to replace it, and will be effectively depriving millions of Americans of their health insurance.

Comment: While Obamacare does in fact help some people, for others it has been a failure and in some cases a nightmare.
