DHS concerned about violence stemming from Trump reinstatement conspiracy theory

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday sent a notice to local and state authorities regarding recent online activity calling for violence in relation to several 2020 election conspiracies.

According to CNN, which cited a source, the notice said:

"[D]HS is providing awareness of reports regarding an increasing but modest level of activity online calling for violence in response to unsubstantiated claims of fraud related to the 2020 election and the alleged 'reinstatement' of former President Trump.

"As public visibility of the narratives increases, we are concerned about more calls to violence. Reporting indicates that the timing of these activities may occur during August 2021, although we lack information on specific plots or planned actions."

Though DHS said it did not have any reports of specific threats, Trump and others have pushed unsubstantiated claims that widespread voter fraud happened during the 2020 election.

The report from round 13 of Imperial College's REACT-1 Covid infection survey was published yesterday, covering the period from June 24th to July 12th, broadly corresponding to the Delta surge.

The press release led with the claim that "double vaccinated people were three times less likely than unvaccinated people to test positive for the coronavirus" (0.4% vs 1.2%). This is clearly misleading as an indication of vaccine effectiveness, however, as younger people were both less likely to be vaccinated and more likely to test positive. As the report itself admits:

"These estimates conflate the effect of vaccination with other correlated variables such as age, which is strongly associated with the likelihood of having been vaccinated and also acts as a proxy for differences in behaviour across the age groups."

Presumably, the headline was chosen by a politically savvy communications officer who did not want to draw attention to the fact that the study found a lower vaccine effectiveness than other studies such as those of Public Health England.

Comment: If vaccines were effective and the 'answer' to Covid, they would not need marketing schemes to manipulate public perceptions to increase acceptance.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom attacked conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder on Thursday during a Zoom call with campaign volunteers, targeting the candidate who is the leading contender to replace Newsom in many polls.

Newsom's attack acknowledges Elder, a popular figure who has never run for public office before, as the leading threat to his tenure. Several recent polls show voters increasingly prepared to recall Newsom; the most recent showed a majority of likely California voters were prepared to remove Newsom from office — a reversal from earlier this year.

A $50,000 bond has been issued for an Arizona state senator who is accused of having sexual conduct with two boys. Sen. Tony Navarrete, a Democrat from Phoenix, was arrested Thursday, accused on multiple counts of sexual conduct with a child, including a single count of molestation with a minor.

According to court documents released late Friday afternoon, on Aug. 4, a 16-year-old boy told detectives during the first incident, Navarrete put his hand down the victim's pants and touched him inappropriately and that Navarrete would go on to do this several times. The victim said this happened to him more than five times. Navarrete also reportedly touched the victim's 13-year-old brother's upper leg, who had to hit his hand away, documents state.

For the first time since 1996 a Russian rhythmic gymnast will not take home Olympic gold in the individual all-round competition after a distraught Dina Averina suffered a shock defeat to Israel's Linoy Ashram.

Three-time reigning all-round world champion Averina, 22, had been odds-on favorite to win the gold after topping qualifying ahead of twin sister Arina Averina, but on a day of high drama at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre on Saturday both were left disappointed.

Dina Averina finished with a total of 107.650 - not enough for her to overcome Israeli rival Ashram, who topped the podium with 107.800.

The US funded a project that collects body parts from aborted babies - some of them apparently alive moments before their organs are harvested - new documents show, prompting claims that conspiracy theorists have been vindicated.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded at least $2.7 million to a University of Pittsburgh program that sought to create a "tissue hub" sourced from aborted fetuses ranging from six to 42 weeks' gestation. Forty-two weeks equates to more than 10 months of pregnancy.

Details about the program emerged after conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch and the Center for Medical Progress obtained 252 pages of documents as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit brought against the HHS.

Protesters took to the streets across France on Saturday for a fourth consecutive weekend to demonstrate against a new health pass needed to enter a cafe or travel on an inter-city train, two days before the new rules come into force.

The new rules championed by French President Emmanuel Macron make it obligatory to have either a full course of vaccination against Covid-19, be in possession of a negative test or be recently recovered from the virus to enjoy usually routine activities.

Macron, who faces re-election next year, hopes the new rules will encourage all French to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and defeat the virus and its fast-spreading Delta variant.

A controversial proposal that sought to make Covid-19 passports mandatory to visit all nightlife venues, floated by the government of Andalusia, has been shot down by the top court in Spain's southern coastal region.

The High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) ruled on Friday against the initiative announced by the regional government earlier this week. Making health passports mandatory to visit indoor nightlife venues was deemed to be discriminatory and in violation of citizens' privacy rights.

The ill-fated plan was announced by the president of the regional government, Juanma Moreno, back on Monday. According to Moreno, an EU Digital Covid Certificate, a negative PCR test, or a negative antibody test would be required to visit any nightlife venue in Andalusia.

Comment: It's rather telling as to the state of the world that much of the emergency legislation, as well a number of recent laws currently being rammed through parliaments, are being ruled as unconstitutional and a violation of the fundamental rights of citizens; it perhaps should also be a source of hope that there are still some areas of the legislature that have not yet succumbed to total ponerization:
