Son of U.S. senator charged with killing 21 dogs at kennel owned by family

The son and daughter-in-law of an Arizona senator pleaded not guilty Thursday to multiple charges of animal cruelty, stemming from the deaths of 21 dogs at a Phoenix-area kennel that they were looking after in June.

Austin Flake, the 21-year-old son of Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona), and his wife Logan, also 21, were taking care of the 28 dogs staying at Green Acres Dog Boarding in June. The facility is owned by Logan's parents, Todd and MaLeisa Hughes, who were on vacation when strategy struck.

Deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office were called to the kennel in Gilbert on June 21, where they found 20 dead dogs piled into a shed on the property. The investigators found that the canines had been crammed in a poorly ventilated 9-by-12-foot room for hours on end. The "slumber room" was cooled separately from the rest of the home. The animals died of heat exhaustion and suffocation, the New York Times reported.

"Owners claim the air conditioning was cut off after a dog chewed through some electrical wiring," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement two days later. "But it seems unreasonable that dogs could be healthy at 11PM at night and dead by 5:30am the next morning as the owners suggest. Even the veterinarian I met with today agrees that the timeline given by the owners and caretakers is highly suspect."

The Flakes attempted to save the dogs they found still alive at 5:30 a.m. by hosing and icing them down, but failed to call for emergency assistance before the dogs died, the statement noted.

Ridiculous: Police officer dubbed 'Cannibal Cop' released from jail

A former New York City police officer convicted of planning to kidnap and rape women before killing and eating them was sentenced to time served on Wednesday, as he insisted in court that the women were "never in danger."

Gilberto Valle, now known as the 'cannibal cop,' was convicted in 2013 for kidnapping conspiracy. Though he faced a possible life term, a federal judge threw out a jury's guilty verdict earlier this year given Valle's steps were "not sufficient - standing alone - to make out the elements of conspiracy to commit kidnapping."

On Wednesday, Valle, 30, was sentenced to one year time served, the maximum for a misdemeanor, and one year probation. He also was ordered to continue mental health treatment. Valle had already served 20 months in jail as he awaited trial.

During his sentencing in a Manhattan federal court, Valle apologized to the women who had to testify in the trial. He said his conversations in online fetish chat rooms were only role-playing fantasies and not about taking concrete steps to kidnap or harm anyone.

"I just hope they know they were never in danger," Valle said, according to AP. "I would never do the things I talked about on the Internet - never."

Comment: A man will say just about anything to stay out of jail.

United States of Ignorance: Americans are almost as dumb as Italians

Image

It's quiz time, people. Let's start with an easy one: What percentage of working-age Americans are unemployed and looking for work?

If you guessed about 6 percent, give yourself a pat on the back. You have a pretty good understanding of the unemployment rate, one of the basic measures of economic well-being. If, on the other hand, you guessed 32 percent -- which would rank America among the most desperate nations on Earth -- then you guessed just like the average American!

That's one of the findings of a survey released this week by U.K. pollster Ipsos Mori, which interviewed 11,527 people. In the 14-country Index of Ignorance (Ipsos Mori's name, but we approve), Americans are second only to Italians in how little we understand some of the stats that track the most basic contours of our society.

Alabama man vilified for telling the truth in Veteran's Day Facebook rant: 'You never fought for any freedoms...'

Image
An Alabama gun shop employee is backing away from controversial remarks he made in a Facebook post on Veterans Day.

Michael Schuette said he became angry while reading social media comments praising veterans for their service and posted remarks that have angered people all over the U.S.

"OK, for my yearly Veterans Day speech...to all vets...you are NOT hero's," Schuette posted. "You got paid to learn how to fight and kill for profit. You 'Served' your leader...You followed the rules and made it out of whatever country you terrorized alive."

"You got a check and a holiday," he continued. "YOU NEVER FOUGHT FOR ANY OF MY FREEDOMS!!!!! You fought for corporate interests...You never sacrificed for this country...You did so for your government owners...You did nothing for American citizens...YOU WANNT MEET HERO's???? Well, shake hands with CIVILIAN EMTs, nurses, firefighters, lawyers and anyone in the ACLU...Please feel free to add some more hero's below but Veterans are you NOT American hero's."

The Anniston man said he has received 1,400 emails, 200 text messages, and hundreds of voice mails from military supporters who were upset by his comments.

Some of the messages pointed out that Schuette's wife owns Outlaw Gun Repair and Hydrographing, and he now plans to step down from his position repairing firearms at the shop.

"Next time don't bite the vets hands that feed your freedom of speech....they bite back," one person posted on the company's website.

He eventually took the post offline, although Yellowhammer News preserved a screen capture, and said he has been apologizing ever since he posted the remarks.

Comment: He certainly backed off the truth pretty quickly after the death threats. Unfortunately, he is right in what he said. U.S. soldiers, past and present, are unwitting manipulated pawns used by psychopathic corporations and governments for profit, domination, invasion, genocide, murder, fear-mongering, and taking what whatever the pathocrats want - nothing more.

Oh, the irony: School named for Barack Obama 'fails to meet expectations', according to report card

It is a sad twist of political irony with serious consequences for students. The only school in Wisconsin currently named for President Barack Obama rates quite dismally on a state report card designed to measure school success.

President Obama himself, according to the latest statewide survey by the Marquette University Law School, has an approval rating of only 41.4% in the state.

The Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education is part of Milwaukee Public Schools. It is located on North Sherman Boulevard in Milwaukee and during the 2012 presidential election the school served as a polling location.

According to data from the state Department of Public Instruction, for the 2013-2014 academic year the school, listed as Obama Elementary, scored 39.4 out of 100.

On a grading scale, that means Obama Elementary is well below failing. Only 14 schools fared worse on the state report card.

Comment: According to the website the curriculum is based on Common Core.
"The curriculum at Barack Obama School of Career & Technical Education K-12 School is based on the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)."
It's said the universe speaks in symbols. This one seems pretty clear.

He's already been deemed more powerful than President Obama - and now, he's even tougher than Chuck Norris.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin, on a visit to South Korea, was honored with a ninth-degree black belt from the president of the World Taekwondo Federation - ranking him a notch higher than Norris.

Putin, a martial-arts enthusiast, was humbled by the honor.

"I'm not sure if I deserve this," said Putin, a former KGB agent, after receiving the honor. "Let's call it our campaign to popularize this wonderful martial art. Russia will do its best to contribute to its popularity at home."

Putin, 61, was judo champion of his home town of Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, in his youth, and starred in the instructional video "Let's Learn Judo With Vladimir Putin" in 2008.

Britons fighting for the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria and Iraq have reportedly called on jihadists in the UK to assassinate key figures.

Messages posted on Twitter allegedly detail the addresses of high-profile people in the UK, the Daily Mail reports.

Junaid Hussain, 20, from Birmingham, is said to be one of those calling for domestic attacks.

Hussain was jailed for six months in 2012 for hacking Tony Blair's office computer. He has since become an outspoken Islamic State supporter on social media.

The Sun reports that Hussain, who goes by the nom de guerre Abu Hussain Al Britani, retweeted a message from another Briton, known as Abu Dujana, on Friday, saying, "Whoo wants 2 do something 2 some top kaffirss, we gt addresses 4 u."

Comment: More fear. What is the purpose of jihadists 'advertising' their terrorist attacks?

Woman burned alive after witchcraft accusation in Paraguay

Image
An indigenous woman was burned alive in Paraguay after being accused of witchcraft, a local prosecutor confirmed Wednesday.

Prosecutor Fany Aguilera said that members of the Mbya Guarani ethnic group tied 45-year-old Adolfina Ocampos to a wooden pole and shot arrows at her before they burned her alive. Ocampos was sentenced to death last week by the community's chief in Tahehyi, a village some 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the capital, Asuncion. The date of the killing was unclear.

Aguilera has charged nine men in the village with first-degree murder, and they have already acknowledged killing the woman.
