Footage has emerged appearing to show Egyptian forces shooting dead an unarmed man who had strayed a few metres over its border with Gaza.

Ishaq Khalil Hassan, 26, reportedly had severe mental health issues and was completely naked when he walked through the sea close to the shore, passing under a fence that marks the border between Egypt and Gaza.

The incident took place on Thursday near the Egyptian border town of Rafah. Hassan, who also suffered from learning difficulties, had previously received treatment at hospitals in Egypt, his family told Al Jazeera Arabic.

Hassan's nephew said on Saturday that his uncle, from the south of Gaza, had been suffering from a mental-health crisis and decided to attempt to get into Egypt for further treatment, Al Jazeera Arabic reported. According to Hassan's relative, he was unable to cross over legally due to the Egypt-Palestine border crossing at Rafah being closed. Egyptian forces stationed at the border reportedly fired 15 shots at Hassan without prior warning.

Anti-Muslim hysteria: Map reveals extent of fascist revival across EU

FAR-RIGHT parties are on the march across Europe as the unprecedented migrant crisis gripping the continent fuels a surge in support for nationalist movements.
Far right parties Europe

This shocking map shows how anti-immigration campaigners have enjoyed huge gains in this year's elections, whilst thousands have taken to the streets to protest against the overwhelming influx of migrants and refugees.

From Greece to Germany and Switzerland to Sweden, far-right protestors and parties have stormed the mainstream of European politics as voters rebel against years of predominantly socialist rule.

In France Marine Le Pen's controversial Front National came within a whisker of winning control over swathes of the country, whilst the traditionally liberal societies of Scandinavia turned their backs on moderates amid unprecedented migratory pressure.

As 2015 draws to a close, Express.co.uk has taken a look at the worrying shift towards the far-right and the inept responses of mainstream politicians which could see the continent once more gripped by fear and intolerance.

Syrians in Golan Heights plan to set up united resistance front against Israel

Israel flag graphic
The residents of Syria's Golan Heights will soon set up a united resistance front against Israel, a provincial official stated on Sunday.

"We will see the integration of popular resistance in both the free and occupied territories of the Golan Heights," member of Syria's Quneitra Provincial Council Ra'afat al-Bokar told FNA on Sunday.

Al-Bokar reiterated that the residents of the Golan Heights have continued their popular resistance ever since the occupation of some parts of the strategic heights by Israel in 1967.

"I confidently say that the people have and will never halt their resistance; we will soon witness integrated efforts by popular resistance forces throughout the Golan Heights against Israel," the provincial official added.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967, when it also took control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, although the move was never recognized by the international community and was labeled as a blatant violation of international law.

A freight train carrying 200,000 liters of sulphuric acid has derailed in northeast Australia. Acid and diesel fuel have spilled. The locomotive and all its 26 carriages derailed at 10:20am local time east of the outback town of Julia Creek.

The perimeter around the spillage was immediately sealed off, to contain the toxicity. Locals told ABC they could smell the acid immediately. A state of emergency has been declared in a two-kilometer radius.

"Two drivers have been released and the third is expected to be released later today," said the spokesperson for Aurizon, Australia's largest freight rail operator. "At this early stage, the cause of the incident is not known. Both Aurizon and Queensland Rail will investigate the incident and determine its cause," he added. "At this time the focus is on recovery of the incident site."

The Flinders Highway has been shut in the vicinity of Julia Creek and Richmond. Queensland Rail says it doesn't know how long it might take before the line opens again. Authorities can't assess the damage, as wet roads from recent rains have made it difficult to get to the site. The rail operator says it's looking for different ways to reach it.

"Passenger rail services have been canceled. The Inlander has been canceled today and tomorrow from Townsville to Mount Isa," a spokeswoman said. The status of the derailed carriages remains unknown. Aurizon says it has put temporary site safety measures in place before the damage can be further assessed.

A far-right French mayor has sparked controversy with a tweet slamming Muslims who symbolically "protected" churches from terror attacks on Christmas day as "arsonists protecting against fires". Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has responded by declaring his "respect" for the initiative and an anti-racist group is threatening legal action.

"Respect for the Muslims who protected churches at Christmas," Cazeneuve tweeted Saturday. "Harmony and fraternity in the republic."

He was responding to Twitter messages by Robert Ménard, the controversial mayor of the southern French town of Béziers who was elected with the support of Marine Le Pen's Front National.

Muslim Kristallnacht: French island of Corsica bans all rallies after huge rise in violent anti-Muslim protests

The French island of Corsica has banned all demonstrations in a low-income neighborhood of its capital Ajaccio recently plagued by violent anti-Muslim protests, including the ransacking of a Muslim prayer house, and burning copies of the Koran.

The decree banning protests in the volatile neighborhood of Jardins de l'Empereur until January 4 was issued by Corsica's prefect Christophe Mirmand.

"It is an order that was taken last night as part of a state of emergency... Instigation of hatred is an offence that can lead to criminal proceedings," he said, as cited by France Info.

No other way to put it: America is mentally ill

mental illness
2015 was a year of exceptionally overt police violence against black folk and tragic mass shootings. A common response to these events has been that they are the result of "sick" individuals. Many conservatives have suggested that the shooters were mentally ill: that the problem was a proliferation of bad people, not a proliferation of guns. When, however, the murderers happen to be people "of color," the narrative often changes to one of terrorism and extremism (though the NRA position remains consistently pro-gun, even defending the rights of the San Bernadino terrorists to acquire their weaponry).

In fact, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, just three-five percent of violent acts are attributable to mental illness. And in fact, police have frequently simply treated nonviolent mental illness as a capital offense requiring instant lethal force.

But what about inciting people to violence? We should not fail to recognize the systemic interplay between race, class, NRA lobbying, and gun-related deaths. The myth of black criminality is conveniently used to replace an institutional analysis of what is wrong with our country. These myths, both for police and for the majority of Americans, justify summary executions, the refusal of police to acknowledge the wrong-doings of fellow officers, and the courts' general unwillingness to hold individual officers accountable, opting instead to prop up a system of cover-up, delay, and denial. The rare exceptions boldly highlight the rule.

America is literally violently ill. This society is feverish on the valorization of violence. Victims of violence - speaking out and demanding accountability for racism (such as in Charleston or Ferguson), or regarding violent sexism (as in Planned Parenthood) - are blamed as the cause. This 'blame culture' is a symptom of America's frankly sick relationship to violence.

Comment: The relentless pressures of an unpredictable society can induce transmarginal inhibition in normal people, rendering their actions desperate and emotional.

Political Ponerology examines how the cycle of violence is perpetuated, not just by trauma, but by the activities of psychopaths. As they attain higher and higher positions of power in a society, they know the only way to maintain their station is through the tactic of divide and conquer.

Chicago police shoot, kill woman and 19-year-old student during domestic disturbance call

Two people were killed on Chicago's West Side after a police-involved shooting early Saturday morning. Family members say 57-year-old Bettie Jones, of the 4700 block of W. Erie, was killed. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office listed Jones' age as 55. The man was identified as Quintonio Legrier, 19, also of the 4700 block of W. Erie.

Family members tell NBC 5 that Jones was a mother of five and Legrier was a Northern Illinois University student studying engineering. The two were shot about 4:25 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Erie as officers were responding to a call of a domestic disturbance, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Office of News Affairs.

Neighbors and family members at the scene said that the domestic disturbance stemmed from the 19-year-old threatening another man in the home with a metal baseball bat. They said the woman, who also lived in the building, opened the door for police and was shot shortly after.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Latesha Jones, the woman's daughter, said she woke up when she heard three gunshots. She walked to the front door and saw her mother bleeding on the ground, she said. "She wasn't saying anything,"
Jones said, who added that she could feel her mother breathing before she was taken away by paramedics. Jones, whose family has lived in the building for a year and a half, said that police shot her mother from outside the home after she opened the door, reports the Sun-Times. Jones' family told NBC 5 they plan to file a lawsuit.

Comment: It's been a killer year for the U.S. police gestapo. With the recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court it's pretty obvious that cops know they can away with murder. See also:

Behind the mask: Hillary Clinton's anti-islamophobia campaign is nothing but cynical veiled opportunism

Hillary Clinton
© Lucas Cobb/Flickr CC

The Democratic frontrunner has praised George W. Bush for his post-9/11 response to Islamophobia.

Since the Paris attacks in November we've seen an alarming increase in cases of anti-Muslim abuse, from violent physical assaults to the firebombing of mosques. Despite this, inciteful political rhetoric has become more audacious and gone on to help develop a heightened state of hysteria. While the response of many right-wing political figures in the United States has been more stammering against "all violence," Hillary Clinton has been celebrated for a noticeably contrasting position.

Hillary Clinton has responded directly to rising GOP jingoism with inclusive rhetoric, calling Muslim-Americans "brothers and sisters" and refusing to use the term "radical Islam," arguing that it "sounds like we are declaring war against a religion." At cursory view this appears to be a meritorious rejection of prevailing sentiment, but upon further examination of Clinton's policies, this bold refrain presents itself as shameless opportunism.

Comment: Wonderful. So now after over 7 years of the first Afro-American President, who was supposed to be the most transparent and progressive president ever - and turned out to be the exact opposite - the puppeteers in Washington are positioning Hillary Clinton to be the first ever woman president, to the delight of many millions of clueless Americans. No doubt she will be very successful in her new role as destroyer-in-chief - if the US is even still intact by then.
