Deputy arrested on child sex charges for the second time

A Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy was indicted this week after being arrested for child sex crimes for the second time during his career in law enforcement. After he had been put back on the job following an arrest years earlier, this monster was never indicted and allowed to return to duty to strike again.

Deputy John Bruce Spaulding, 49, was indicted by a Hamilton County Grand Jury on six counts of sexual exploitation of a minor following an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigators.

The TBI received a tip in June of this year from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that someone was in possession of disturbing images of children being sexually exploited. Their investigation found that person to be Spaulding.

According to the indictment, Spaulding possessed material that included a minor engaged in sexual activity or simulated sexual activity. The victims were under the age of 13.

A San Diego tech firm specializing in mini-reconnaissance quadcopters has been awarded a million dollar contract to provide drones that scour urban battlefields and beam back critical information to the US army.

Shield AI's mission statement suggests their flying machines can help solve the "intelligence deficit" that can often mean the difference between life and death for military personnel dropped into densely populated city war zones.

A notice on the US business procurement website, FedBizOpps, reveals the company has recently been contracted by the US Army and Naval Special Warfare Command to work on autonomous tactical airborne drones.

Analysis of anti-Russian bigotry in the 2016 Olympics

Russian flag olympics
What some say about Russia/Russians is more of an indicator about the former than the latter. A good deal of commentary is on record about the Olympics and Russia. For a fuller overview, some additional points can be added.

Bigotry has been definitely at play. From Juliet Macur's July 20 New York Times (NYT) article "First Medal of Rio Olympics Deserves to go to a Whistle Blower", is this contemptible excerpt: "The whistle-blowers are holding their breath. The Russians and clean athletes are, too." That kind of sentiment has been expressed elsewhere. Substitute "Russians" for some other group in such a negatively applied way and see the selective outrage. No NYT journo would write a bigoted comparison that differentiates between law abiding citizens and African-Americans, followed by a utilization of crime statistics as "proof" for such a presented contrast.

Like her other NYT Olympic covering colleagues, Macur has been an uncritical cheerleader of their newspaper's exclusive feature of the Russian doctor, Grigory Rodchenkov, who has made a series of eye opening claims that (to date) haven't been firmly established. Likewise, The NYT has given uncritical praise to the questionable report by Canadian attorney Richard McLaren, at the behest of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). McLaren's report is largely based on Rodchenkov's claims. Rodchenkov hasn't been accessible for follow-up. Rather than seeking to cover-up the claim of a Russian state sponsored doping campaign in sports, the Russian government has openly sought a further questioning of Rodchenkov.

Is society doomed? Researchers reveal the signs that show civilization is set to collapse

neolithic Europe
© Getty images DeagostiniResearchers examined 2,378 archaeological sites from nine regions of Neolithic Europe to determine if early warning signs were present before the collapse of a civilization. The image above illustrates life in the Neolithic Age
It has been seen all throughout human history - a bustling community experiences a population boom and technological advancement until, seemingly overnight, it plummets into total collapse.

Now, researchers may have developed the framework to predict these events before they happen.

By analyzing archaeological records of the European Neolithic communities, which existed roughly 9,000 years ago, researchers have identified the early warning signals linked to societal downfall.

In a study published to Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they explain that this new framework could help to prevent future catastrophes as the modern world copes with major societal shifts.

The researchers from the University of Maryland and University College London investigated whether early warning signals are present when an ecosystem begins to show declining resilience.

This phenomenon can indicate the forthcoming of 'major reorganization,' or a regime shift within the ecosystem, and subsequently, a collapse.

To do this, they examined 2,378 archaeological sites from nine regions of Neolithic Europe.

Sick! Subway frontman, Jared Fogle, sues his victim's parents for causing her emotional distress

Jared Fogle
© APLegal fight: Millionaire pedophile Jared Fogle is suing the parents of one of the girls he had videos of after his business partner concealed cameras around the home where she was a regular visitor.

Jared Fogle, the disgraced Subway pitchman who was convicted of a string of child sex offenses, is suing one of his victim's parents, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Fogle, currently detained at a federal prison in Colorado, has lodged court documents blaming the girl's parents for a cycle of despair, self-harm and drink and drug abuse which she says was the result of his abuse.

In court documents obtained by DailyMail, Fogle claims that her parents, named only as B.T. and J.T. are responsible for what happened to her - and not him.

The girl, Jane Doe, lodged a compensation claim against millionaire Fogle earlier this year.

A series of demonstrations have been held across the United Kingdom to protest the Brexit vote and call on the government to remain as a member of the European Union (EU).

Thousands of people took to the streets to express their opposition to the vote in central London, and marched to Parliament Square on Saturday.

They held pro-EU and anti-Brexit banners and shouted slogans against the June 23 vote, which obliges the UK to leave the 28-member union after 43 years of membership.

Canada's Enbridge quits Sandpiper Pipeline project

After more than two years of slogging through Minnesota's regulatory process, Canadian oil company Enbridge is giving up the ghost of the Sandpiper Pipeline Project. The energy giant asked the state to pull the plug on the pipeline.

On Thursday, Enbridge Energy Partners (EEP) filed documents asking Minnesota to end regulatory proceedings for the Sandpiper Pipeline Project, which called for the construction of a 616-mile (991-km) crude oil pipeline that would have carried 375,000 barrels per day from the Bakken Fields near Tioga, North Dakota, across Minnesota and to Superior, Wisconsin. It was expected to cost nearly $2.6 billion, which would have been privately funded.

EEP "will be withdrawing regulatory applications pending with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission for the Sandpiper Pipeline Project," the company said in a statement, adding that it "has completed a review of Sandpiper and concluded that the project should be delayed until such time as crude oil production in North Dakota recovers sufficiently to support development of new pipeline capacity." That capacity won't likely be needed for at least five years, EEP predicted. If and when it is needed, the company will have to start the regulatory process from scratch ‒ something EEP has long criticized, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"Extensive and unprecedented regulatory delays and procedural irregularities have plagued the Sandpiper project since applications were filed nearly three years ago," EEP President Mark Maki told reporters. "The business, competitive and market environment is very different now than it was at the time when we applied for regulatory approval of the Sandpiper project back in 2013."

Comment: Enbridge's switch to the Bakken Pipeline System has ramifications to the environment in numerous states from N. Dakota to the Gulf of Mexico, to Native American land and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

Melania Trump sues Daily Mail into submission, upholds family tradition

Melania Trump
© Mike Segar/ReutersMelania Trump
It seems the Daily Mail forgot they were talking about the most litigious happy family around when they published allegations that Melania Trump was involved in sex work. The article was retracted after she filed a complaint in court.

It seems Melania has taken up the Trump pastime of suing publications that display the family in a disparaging light. On Thursday, she lodged a complaint in a Maryland Circuit Court which claims that the Daily Mail's story - titled Naked photo shoots and troubling questions about visas that won't go away: The VERY racy past of Donald Trump's Slovenian wife - amounted to defamation.

In a lawsuit against both Mail Media and a journalist named Webster Griffin Tarpley, she hit each with one count of libel and one count of tortious interference with actual and/or prospective business advantage against all defendants. In non-legalese English, that means she alleges the stories jeopardized her business relationships "by sullying her good name," according to the lawsuit.

Comment: Retractions aside, like it or not, the story is out there. No thanks to the journalistic sleight of hand.

Justice NOT served: Prosecutor says no reason to charge officer who body-slammed student

south carolina cop body slam
© Samuel Negron / YouTube
A former sheriff's deputy whose assault of a black student shocked the nation last year, has dodged criminal charges for slamming and dragging the 16-year-old girl from behind a desk. Yet, a prosecutor still believes his firing was "necessary."

A South Carolina prosecutor has decided that no charges will be pursued against former Richland County Deputy Ben Fields, who maintained order at the Spring Valley High School until last year.

Comment: So a cop body slams a 16-year-old girl (for presumably being a teenager and doing teenager like things) and SHE is the one who was facing charges that have now been graciously dropped?! Another example of the 'great' American justice system in action.
