Portland violence
Violence has broken out on the streets of Portland this afternoon as Antifa and right-wing groups came face-to-face, with Antifa assaulting numerous people.

The Proud Boys and Antifa held simultaneous demonstrations in Portland's downtown. Skirmishes, assaults and arrests occurred, with weapons seized.

Our reporter was in the streets and captured dramatic footage.

In one clip, an older man was assaulted by Antifa and his American flag was ripped out of his hands.

UPDATE18/08/2019: Thirteen people have been arrested so far:
Police have arrested 13 people on a range of charges, including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon, after right-wing demonstrators squared off with Antifa counter-protesters in Portland, Oregon.

Speaking at a press conference in the wake of the protests in Portland, which were marred by sporadic incidents of violence, city mayor Ted Wheeler hailed police for doing "an exemplary job of de-escalating the situation." He described the demonstration as a "largely peaceful event" despite the emergence of multiple videos documenting attacks mostly by Antifa on right-wing demonstrators.

In one particularly violent episode, a gang of masked protesters viciously attacked two buses carrying right-wing activists, pelting the vehicles with rocks, throwing a hammer, and attempting to force their way onto one of the buses by smashing its doors.

Conflicting reports and additional video suggest that the hammer may have been taken from a right-wing demonstrator during the skirmish.

Footage shows the door of the bus opening, with a right-wing protester swinging a hammer at Antifa members who had swarmed around the entrance of the vehicle.

While the mayor's remark may have raised some eyebrows, Portland police chief Danielle Outlaw reported that 13 people were arrested in connection with the turmoil, on charges including disorderly conduct, interfering with police, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The Muslim convert Jack Letts, who is suspected of leaving Britain to join the Islamic State, has been stripped of his British citizenship, it has been reported.

Jack Letts was 18 when he left his Oxfordshire home in 2014 before marrying in Iraq and moving to Raqqa in Syria. Captured by Kurdish forces as he attempted to flee to Turkey in May 2017, the 24-year-old, dubbed "Jihadi Jack", has since been held in jail in northern Syria.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Letts - who is a dual UK-Canadian national - has had his British citizenship revoked, a move that was one of the last actions of Theresa May's government.

A Home Office spokesman said: "Decisions on depriving a dual national of citizenship are based on substantial advice from officials, lawyers and the intelligence agencies and all available information. This power is one way we can counter the terrorist threat posed by some of the most dangerous individuals and keep our country safe."

In an interview with ITV earlier this year, Letts said he felt British and that he wanted to return to the UK, but admitted he did not think that would be likely.

'We are moving into a new, controlled society worse than old totalitarianism' - Zizek on Google leak

Modern censorship is more dangerous than open totalitarianism, it being concealed and incorporated in our daily routine, says Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek, commenting on the insider leak detailing Google's news blacklist.

The intellectual told RT he's not advocating for online anarchy, comparing it to snuff movies in hardcore pornography - some regulation should be in place to block harmful content on the internet, he says. But hiding political motives for suppressing voices online is what worries Zizek the most.

"We all know we have to censor things at some level, but the main rule for me is that the process should be transparent. Not in the way - I'm talking about the developed West - it is done now, when all of a sudden somebody is prohibited and you are not even allowed to debate it," Zizek explains. The "false choice" between politically correct censorship and radical liberalism is a trap, he believes.

Three-quarters of Germans say that a US troop pullout won't leave them defenseless, but almost as many believe their own army would be of little effect, a poll found, amid reports that Washington may move its assets to Poland.

74 percent of people surveyed by pollster Emnid for Bild magazine believe they wouldn't feel less secure if American troops were to withdraw from Germany, as compared to 18 percent who said the US military presence reinforces their feeling of safety.

Previously, two American ambassadors, Georgette Mosbacher in Warsaw and the notorious Richard Grenell in Berlin, have hinted that relocating US forces to neighboring Poland might be a possibility, as Washington becomes increasingly angry at what it sees as Germany's low defense spending.

A throng of left-wing activists gathered in the heart of Moscow, demanding fair elections and social justice. The rally took place on the heels of massive opposition protests that have been hitting the city for three weekends.

The Communist Party (KPRF) demonstration, sanctioned by Moscow authorities, kicked off at noon on Sakharov Avenue, a spacious, usually busy place that's been temporarily pedestrianized by police. Attendance at the rally initially seemed modest, with around 500 protesters turning up, but more people joined as the day progressed.

Aside from KPRF, there were also members of smaller left-wing groups who chose to join forces with the larger party. Moscow police estimated that over 4,100 people attended the event.

Disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein reportedly committed suicide in his prison cell where he was awaiting trial over accusations of trafficking under-age girls for sex. His death has sparked conspiracy theories suggesting that some powerful people wished him dead, as Epstein's trial could have exposed their complicity in his alleged sex ring.

Jeffrey Epstein's lawyers have announced that they are planning to carry out an independent investigation into the death of the multi-millionaire, accused of sex-trafficking, and demand video footage from the prison. According to his legal team, they are "not satisfied with the conclusions of the medical examiner" that he killed himself in his cell in New York's Metropolitan Correctional Centre.

"It is indisputable that the authorities violated their own protocols", the lawyers said, also criticising the "harsh, even medieval conditions" in Epstein's prison.

Germany: Refugees going on repeated holidays in their home countries risk deportation

Refugees frequenting their war-ravaged countries on vacations will risk being deported from Germany, as such "holidaymaking" means they are no longer in danger at home, the European country's interior minister has warned.

"Syrian refugees that regularly spend holidays at home can't seriously talk about being persecuted in Syria," Horst Seehofer told Bild am Sonntag, adding that those following that logic "should be stripped of asylum."

Immigration authorities are closely following recent developments in Syria so that "repatriations" are carried out "when the situation allows."

His comment came as a wrap-up to the tabloid's report which highlighted Syrians who have consistently visited families or relatives back in their home cities without reporting these trips to German authorities upon return.

Once granted asylum, a refugee is not allowed to travel to their country of origin, family emergencies such as the illness of or death of a close relative being the only exceptions. But a Bild correspondent - himself a Syrian refugee - learned that a sizeable number of migrants manage to cheat the system.

An Indiana state lawmaker is accused of impersonating a police officer to find cocaine, driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, according to prosecutors.

Rep. Dan Forestal, a Democrat who was elected to the state House in 2012, approached a couple outside their Indianapolis home Saturday night and told them: "I'm a legit officer doing a drug bust and today is the last day before the Feds descend and start kicking in doors," court documents said.

He then showed them a badge with a silver chain and asked them to tell him where the "people selling drugs" lived.

Earlier in the evening, Forestal, 36, had been at a bar telling customers he was a firefighter, and asking them where he could buy "party favors" like cocaine, a bartender told investigators, according to an affidavit filed in Marion Superior Court on Wednesday.

A 34-year-old Anaheim man with a lengthy criminal history — which included seven prior convictions — was sentenced to just three years in prison for punching a man at a La Habra birthday party last year, leaving him with permanent brain damage.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Roger B. Robbins Thursday sentenced Christian Isadore Dubose to three years in state prison for punching a man so hard it left him with the mental capacity of a 14-year-old, the O.C. District Attorney's Office reports.

Dubose had faced a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Dubose punched the 34-year-old victim outside a birthday party at a La Habra apartment on April 13, 2018, prosecutors say. Dubose followed the man and his girlfriend outside and then punched him, unprovoked, after accusing him of owing Dubose $200.

Possible reason for radiation spike in Russia's Severodvinsk revealed

On 8 August Russia's Ministry of Defence reported an explosion of a jet propulsion system at a training ground in the country's Arkhangelsk Region, with later reports confirming the death of seven people in the incident.

Experts from the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Rosgidromet) claim the recent spike in gamma radiation in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Region on 8 August following a tragic incident during military trials is connected to the passing of a cloud of radioactive inert gases.

"It is assumed that the increase in the ADER (ambient equivalent dose rate) gamma radiation registered on 8 August, 2019 is associated with the passage of a cloud of radioactive inert gases. The meteorological situation in Arkhangelsk Region contributed to the rapid dispersal of the cloud", Russia's weather service reports about the identified changes in radiation levels from 5 - 16 August, in information published on its website.

Comment: That explanation makes no sense. A radioactive cloud just happened to be passing by at the moment of an 'accidental explosion' involving nuclear devices?
