Just 8% of Ukrainians ready to take up arms against Russia - pollster

Most Ukrainians expect their country to win in the armed conflict with Russia, but just 8% are willing to fight to further their cause, the head of a leading Kiev-based polling agency has claimed, in an interview published on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian leadership has said that it is seeking to boost the military's ranks by up to 500,000. Additional troops are required to relieve forces on the frontline, some of which have not been properly rotated in years, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has claimed.

Vladimir Paniotto of the International Institute of Sociology discussed how the Ukrainian people's worldview is reflected in research conducted by his organization with local news outlet Ukrainskaya Pravda.

They tend to "wish for conflicting things," he mused, such as capitalist liberalization alongside robust social support by the state, or democracy as well as the "strong arm" of the government. The conundrum is present in what Ukrainians are willing to do to defeat Russia - an outcome that they overwhelmingly believe will end the ongoing hostilities.

"Certainly, many people are willing to act, to send donations or work as volunteers," Paniotto said. "But facing a direct risk to life and taking part in military action - that is much harder... We estimate that the share of those willing to take arms is roughly 8% across all categories."

Comment: Judging from the reports of the hard time the Ukrainian military is having filling its personnel quotas, 8% probably is an overestimate. Even if it isn't, it's one thing to say you're willing to take up arms but it's another thing entirely to actually take up arms and fight.

3rd US Circuit Court upholds Pennsylvania law rejecting undated mail-in ballots

Four years after bureaucrats tried to usurp the Pennsylvania legislature's authority by counting ballots that violated state law, a panel of Democrat-appointed judges upheld a state law that says such ballots are invalid.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 on Wednesday that mail-in ballots that arrive in envelopes with a missing or incorrect date are not valid, overturning a lower court's decision.

"This is a crucial victory for election integrity and voter confidence in the Keystone State and nationwide," Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley said in a statement. "Pennsylvanians deserve to feel confident in the security of their mail ballots, and this 3rd Circuit ruling roundly rejects unlawful left-wing attempts to count undated or incorrectly dated mail ballots."

Comment: A sensible ruling from a panel of Democratic judges. Hell just froze over . . . .

Rep. Pramila Jayapal sounds the alarm on Dem revolt against Biden, says Gaza war 'breaking our coalition'

Progressive Rep. Pramila Jayapal warned her fellow Democrats over the weekend that the ongoing Israel-Hamas war is fracturing the party — and it will be harder to reunite the factions the longer it rages on.

"This particular issue on Gaza is breaking our coalition," Jayapal (D-Wash.) vented to CNN's Manu Raju in a segment that aired Sunday.

"We need that fragile coalition to come back together, but this is a moral issue for people. So there's not a lot of time to fix it," she went on. "The worse it gets in Gaza, the harder it gets to bring people back in."

Jayapal chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus and had been among the earliest lawmakers to call for a cease-fire.

Kiev has lost more than 80,000 troops since January - Russian MoD

Ukrainian forces have lost more than 80,000 troops since the beginning of the year, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Tuesday, adding that the Russian military is continuing to reduce "the enemy's combat potential."

More than 14,000 pieces of military hardware have also been destroyed by Russian forces since January, including 1,200 tanks and other armored combat vehicles. During the same period, Moscow has liberated some 403 square kilometers of Russia's new territories, Shoigu told a conference call with the country's military leadership.

Despite Kiev's lack of success on the battlefield, the Ukrainian leadership "is still trying to convince its Western sponsors of its ability to resist the Russian Army," he said. To do so, Kiev has resorted to terrorism and long-range strikes on Russian territories, targeting the civilian population, the minister added.

Utah formally empowers State Treasurer to protect state funds with gold and silver

Spencer Cox
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has signed legislation explicitly empowering the state treasurer to protect state funds with an allocation to physical gold and silver.

Sponsored by Rep. Ken Ivory, House Bill 348 permits - but does not require - the Treasurer to hold up to 10 percent of certain state reserve accounts in physical gold and silver to help secure state assets against the risks of inflation and financial turmoil and/or to achieve capital gains as measured in Federal Reserve Notes.

The Treasurer has limited options for holding, managing, and investing Utah's state monies, making this legislation necessary in order for gold and silver to be included.

Utah's reserves are invested almost exclusively in corporate bonds and banking agencies. These debt instruments appear to have low volatility, but they carry other risks - including pernicious inflation and the steady erosion in real value of principal, coupled with interest rates that are often negative in real terms.

A member of the CHP party died after a balcony collapsed during victory celebration.

A celebration of a local election win in the Turkish city of Denizli turned deadly for Türkiye's Republican People's Party (CHP), with one person killed and seven others injured.

The accident occurred overnight as party members and supporters gathered to celebrate the victory of Kadir Tatik in his campaign for the local municipality head's office, after preliminary results of the election were announced.

Footage from the scene shows multiple party members gathered on a balcony of a building, with a crowd of onlookers cheering them on outside. The balcony is seen abruptly collapsing, coming clean off the rest of the structure.

The accident left eight party members who were standing on the balcony injured. Three people received serious injuries, with one of them, the deputy head of the local CHP chapter, Mehmet Palaz, dying in hospital shortly afterwards.

According to the report, the bombs between them contained 70 kilograms of high-power explosives, which the FSB said had travelled from Ukraine through Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia before being discovered just before they reached their final destination in Russia.

Ukrainian counteroffensive 'biggest debacle in modern military history' - David Sacks

The failure of Ukraine's 2023 summer counteroffensive against Russia was "easily predictable," according to US tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist David Sacks, who has suggested that the Washington elite should be held accountable for talking up the doomed operation.

Sacks' comments came in response to a post on Saturday by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who condemned the unnecessary loss of life suffered by Kiev's forces as they attempted to "attack a larger army" that had superior defenses.

The failed Ukrainian counteroffensive was "one of the biggest debacles in the history of modern warfare," Sacks said in agreement, adding that Kiev's soldiers and tanks had effectively run "headlong into minefields while Russian artillery rained down on them from heavily fortified positions."

Comment: That the Ukrainian counter-offensive was a total failure is a statement that all unbiased observers have agreed upon, yet no criticism from the mainstream media towards the military top brass in the US exists. That alone is a huge sign of how much the media in the West has become the mouthpiece for government propaganda.
