Rome risks traffic chaos after bridge gutted by fire the night before Romans vote for a new mayor.

Rome's Ponte dell'Industria - better known as Ponte di Ferro - was partially destroyed in a massive fire on Saturday night.

The iconic metal bridge, which dates to 1863, went up in flames just before midnight, leading to some external sections of the structure collapsing into the river Tiber.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire which may have originated from makeshift shacks under the 158-year-old bridge, and involved electric and gas pipelines.

The Sickness Cult - Getting ready for just in case

V for Vendetta Quote
© Dezignerz Blogspot
Some of of you have probably seen and listened to the speech given by the character V in the wonderfully inspirational movie, V For Vendetta - which bears re-watching if you haven't lately and is a must-view if you've never seen it at all.

The speech - given over government-censored airwaves pirated by the character, V - talks about how people gave in to fear - of sickness, ironically enough. And turned over power to an authoritarian government - or rather, submitted to it - out of desperation for a return to some semblance of calm and normalcy.

One of the specific things V touched on was the perfectly natural desire most of us have for the familiar things, the everyday routines and places - and how this can be used against us by psychopathic political types to leverage our submission. No one wants to put their life's work in jeopardy, much less their family's security. People cherish their friends and community; they love their homes.

It is very difficult to say good-by to these things.

But sometimes, it is the only thing to do.

Liberal logic: After defunding police, Portland to give firefighters bulletproof vests amid surging gun violence

Portland firefighters to receive bulletproof vests in wake of police defunding
After slashing the police budget by $15 million last year in response to the 'defund the police' movement, Portland is now giving its firefighters bulletproof vests as violent crime surges in the Democratic stronghold.

According to Portland Fire & Rescue, the decision was the result of a "changing landscape" which includes more calls involving 'aggressive patients and bystanders.'

According to Oregon Live, many details surrounding the vests are still unclear - including when the vests will be worn (on top of the 45 lbs of gear they're already wearing), how many will be purchased, and when they will become available.

Low information: Howard Stern loses his mind over Joe Rogan and his COVID stance

Howard Stern
© Evan Agostini
Howard Stern once described himself as the "King of all Media" and for a while, he was certainly the king of morning radio. Now, he might be best described as the old guy on his porch screaming GET OFF MY LAWN when it comes to stuff he just does not understand.

This does not make me happy to say this, being I think Howard Stern is a media legend and one of the five best interviewers in the country. Yet he has fallen victim to the nonsense that anything the talking heads of government say must be the truth and if anyone raises a question they need to be ridiculed. Try as he and others might to be smarmy, more people are asking just very simple questions and you can't avoid it. The top of the list is...

Are we being told everything?

My colleagues here at Red State have been leading the "what is truthful" question sessions and one of the leaders of that brigade is Scott Hounsell who has broken COVID stories months before the MSM catches up.

Joe Rogan has also been one of those people that has asked questions and earned the ire of Stern last week along with all of those "anti-vaxxers" who really aren't anti-vax but just have questions about a vaccination that has been rushed.

Best of the Web: Lockdowns cause largest cargo delivery backlog EVER - inflation, unemployment and food shortages expected to worsen

shipping jam
The traffic-jams at ports on the California and Atlantic coasts have reached alarming heights in the past 18 months, and the buildup of cargo along the coasts is hindering the US' supply-chain system of railways and trucking routes
Dozens of cargo ships anchored off the coasts of Los Angeles and New York face shocking wait times of up to four weeks and railyards and trucking routes are hopelessly clogged due to the lack of manpower to unload goods - with an expert warning that the government needs to intervene or face spiraling inflation and unemployment.

The backlog of billions of dollars of toys, clothing, electronics, vehicles, and furniture comes as the demand for consumer goods hit its highest point in history as consumers stay home instead of spending money on travel and entertainment.

Supply chains have lagged far behind consumer demand due to a lack of manpower at American ports and the restrictions that came with the COVID-19 outbreak early last year. These constraints, which include social distancing and mandatory quarantines, have severely limited the number and ability of port workers to do their jobs.

Comment: Initially the media blamed the shortages and backlogs on a sudden 'lack of workers' - '100,000 lorry drivers', '15,000 butchers' - however, as we can see above, there are a number of factors converging, and government lockdowns are almost solely to blame. Lockdowns have meant that for about 18 months ports (like hospitals) are still working at restricted capacity. Meanwhile the lifting of some restrictions has resulted in increased demand, plus there's a backlog to clear out, which is also causing further disruption along the line, and, finally, because of all that, more workers than usual are needed.

However, there does appear to be some truth to the claim that lockdowns have also had an impact on the availability of employees, because furlough, layoffs, home working, unemployment benefits, and so on, has resulted in a significant reduction in the number workers available: Where Did All The People Go?

More than half of Americans who voted for Trump are in favor of 'red' states seceding from the union, according to a recent poll which found nearly half of Biden voters feel the same way. Is the nation en route to Civil War 2.0?

Some 52% of Trump voters surveyed by the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia believe the country would be better off if Republican-voting ('red') states seceded from the union to form their own nation, according to a poll published on Friday. A quarter of such voters strongly agreed with that sentiment.

It was not only Trump voters who thought it was time for the United States to disunite. Some 41% of Biden voters also approved of the idea, though a smaller percentage - 18% - felt strongly about it.

School Boards ask Biden to review threats and violence as possible 'domestic terrorism'

A group representing local school boards says the federal government should review violence and threats involving schools to see if they violate federal statutes about domestic terrorism and hate crimes, amid ongoing tension and anger about COVID-19 policies.

In a Wednesday letter to President Joe Biden, the National School Boards Association says statutes like the Gun-Free School Zones Act and the USA PATRIOT Act, a law passed shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon designed to halt terrorism, should be enforced if necessary against crimes and acts of violence targeting K-12 officials. The school board group says the classification of these acts could be "the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes."

The school boards group, which cited several newspaper articles about angry demonstrations at school board meetings and other incidents around the country, also told Biden that the U.S. Postal Service should intervene against cyber-bullying and threatening letters that have targeted students, teachers, administrators, and others.
