Oy vey! Erratic Roseanne Barr to go to Israel and give anti-BDS speech to Knesset

Roseanne Barr

Roseanne Barr
American fallen-from-grace celebrity Roseanne Barr is going to Israel. And not just on any trip. She has been invited by the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, to speak against the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel - she is due to speak on the 30th of January. The invitation is reportedly an initiative not of a government right-winger, but of none other than a leftist, Zionist Union member - Knesset Deputy Speaker Yehiel ('Hilik') Bar.

And her Sherpa? The ridiculous celebrity "Rabbi of America" - Shmuley Boteach. Boteach, popular from his books about "Kosher Sex" and "Kosher Lust", has been serving as a channel for those who have fallen out of grace, for example Samantha Power, who needed to improve her standing with the Israel-apologetic Jewish community in order to become US Ambassador to UN. But Roseanne Barr hasn't really fallen from grace with the Jewish community - she's fallen from grace from the US in general.

Why the Silk Road from Europe to China bypassed the 'dead-end' Ukraine

Ukraine tank
Ukraine risks losing one more piece of the transit pie worth billions of dollars per year. The other day the International Union of Railways and the freight association FERRMED signed a memorandum on the development of Eurasian logistics for the transportation of goods between China and the EU.

"The main international freight railway route between China and Europe passes along the border of Ukraine, but not through Ukraine" wrote the former deputy Minister of Infrastructure Aleksandr Kava on his Facebook page.

He explained to "Strana" that when planning the route of the European-Chinese corridor, transport workers intended to bypass Ukraine. The main flow of freight will go through Belarus. Ukraine was left with only a "spare branch" - on the map it is a thin thread of a section in the direction of Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia.

'He's cute!' Putin receives a fierce and loyal Balkan sheepdog puppy

Pasha
Pasha, a 3-month-old Sarplaninac with a seven-generation family tree, became the fifth canine to be given to Vladimir Putin since he first became president in 2000, but is perhaps the most symbolic furry gift he has ever received.

"He's cute!" exclaimed Putin, after an exchange with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandr Vucic at his residence in Belgrade.

The episode was one of the highlights of the warmest reception the Russian leader is likely to experience anywhere in Europe.

Reserve military officers on 'standby' in event of no-deal Brexit

British soldier
Reserve military officers could be called up for a year of service as part of government plans for a no-deal Brexit.

It comes after the defence secretary said 3,500 troops were "held at readiness"to help if the UK crashes out of the EU.

The official call-up order was made in a ministerial statement on Thursday.

Labour, which is calling for a no-deal to be ruled out, said the move showed the prospect was a "serious threat".

Japanese hotel fires half its robot staff for annoying guests

As robots and artificial intelligence begin to take on more roles in our daily lives, there are bound to be hiccups, some bigger than others. When they're minor, they seem quaint - if a little sinister - as in the case of the emotionally unstable CIMON aboard the ISS. As these incidents scale, however, they go from cute to downright concerning. From Alexa units suggesting that users kill their parents to artificial intelligence programs learning to not only cheat at tasks, but conceal their deception from human programmers, these hiccups raise questions about the limits of technology while stoking anxieties about machines that can not only outperform humans, but also outthink them.

Another one of these hiccups recently occurred in Sasebo, Japan's Henn Na Hotel, which bills itself as the world's first hotel staffed by robots, including some that resemble dinosaurs. According to the Wall Street Journal, the hotel has had to fire - or turn off, decommission, or throw into a basement - half of its 243 robots because they were annoying the guests. The Journal reports that at least one guest complained that his snoring was triggering a verbal response from the "doll-shaped assistant in his room" which would mistake his nocturnal grunting for an inarticulate request. Other robots were removed due to their physical limitations: certain baggage carrier units could reach less than a quarter of the hotel's 100 rooms, as they had to be able to travel on flat surfaces and couldn't risk getting wet traveling between hotel wings. "They were really slow and noisy," one guest told the Journal, "and would get stuck trying to go past each other,"

Model claiming to have information on links between Trump and Russia gets deported from Thailand

Anastasia Vashukevich

Anastasia Vashukevich, known as Nastya Rybka, was held in a police raid last February in the sleazy Thai seaside resort of Pattaya.
A Belarusian model who claimed she had evidence of Russian efforts to help Donald Trump win office was deported from Thailand on Thursday after being convicted of participating in a "sex training course".

Anastasia Vashukevich, known by her pen-name Nastya Rybka, was held with several others in a police raid last February in the sleazy seaside resort of Pattaya.

In a case that veered between salacious and bizarre, Vashukevich said she had travelled to Thailand after becoming embroiled in a political scandal with Russian aluminium tycoon Oleg Deripaska -- a one-time associate of Trump's disgraced former campaign director Paul Manafort.

She then set tongues wagging by promising to reveal "missing puzzle pieces" regarding claims the Kremlin aided Trump's 2016 presidential election victory.

But the material never surfaced and critics dismissed the claims as a publicity stunt.

The Tempe Police Department said on Wednesday the "man" that was shot and later died at the hospital was a 14-year-old boy.

Police also said he had a replica 1911 model airsoft gun, not a real handgun.

Police said the officer was chasing the teen near 48th Street and Baseline on Tuesday afternoon and he turned around and the officer felt threatened so he fired his gun.

"This is unfortunately a situation that the officer is going to have to live with forever. They're going to carry some issues with them now that they know it wasn't a actual firearm. However, they're doing exactly what they're supposed to do by policy and procedure in their training with the police department," said Kevin Boontjer, a retired police sergeant.

The teen was later found in an alley and taken to the hospital where he later died.

Police said it all started when they received a call about a suspicious vehicle just after 2:30 p.m. An officer arrived and found the teen burglarizing the vehicle.

The Bachelor and Gillette - Society's double standards for male and female behavior

grilling
Does redefining masculinity really make men "the best they can be?" Gillette seems to think so, but we're not so sure.

In fact, Gillette's commercial about toxic masculinity lends some critical insights into today's views of sexuality, men, and women, particularly in contrast to another of this week's attractions:

The Bachelor

What stands out in this week's episode? The women shamelessly use their sexuality to win Colton over. This is clear from the start with the amount of raunchy references they make to his virginity (which is an impressive attribute for any bachelor to have and not something to be so lightly joked about).

Due to mass migration, Denmark has changed in a single generation

Denmark
Denmark made international headlines in late November 2018, when the Danish government announced a plan to send certain asylum seekers to the small, uninhabited island of Lindholm. The international outrage was intensified when it came to light that the island currently houses a research center for contagious animal diseases; that the ferry which the asylum seekers will be able to take to the mainland during the day (it does not operate in the evening) is named "Virus"; and that the asylum center will be accompanied by a constant police presence on the island.

The group of asylum seekers meant to live in Lindholm consists of criminals of various sorts, including those who have been sentenced to be deported from Denmark, those who are considered a security threat to Denmark, and so-called "foreign warriors".

Comment: In neighboring Sweden, the effects of mass migration - and the policies that have helped allow it - have made an even greater impact:
