Red Cross urges Spanish to donate money for food parcels to give to their own countrymen, as 2.3 million are deemed 'extremely vulnerable'

Spaniards are being called on to supply food parcels to their poverty-stricken counterparts as the nation's economic crisis continues to bite.

Spain's Red Cross today launches a drastic appeal for โ‚ฌ30 million - a move which in recent years has been reserved for helping famine-hit African nations and earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

It is the first time the agency's annual campaign has focused solely on aiding people in its own country and will see essential food supplies handed out to
2.3 million 'extremely vulnerable' citizens over the next two years.

According to the German newspaper Bild, a 50-year-old man referred to only as Andre C. was seen walking around on Saturday afternoon holding two knives. He is said to have also been carrying an axe in his waistband.

Terrified residents reportedly called the police, and officers soon arrived at the scene, Bild adds.

Oil City, Pennsylvania - A 13-year-old boy shot and killed his grandparents after they allegedly called his mother a whore, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

State troopers today announced the boy, Zachery James Proper of Oil City, Pennsylvania, will be charged with criminal homicide in the weekend shootings of his grandparents, Dorothy and George Fross.

According to the criminal complaint by troopers in northwestern Pennsylvania, Proper's parents, Ryan and Karen Kapp, called Oil City police Monday night because they were concerned that their son had gotten drunk and high on Sunday night and had stolen a car belonging to his grandparents. The Kapps called police because they could not reach the Frosses by phone and because Proper told them that "his friend had shot and killed his grandparents," the complaint said.

The Oil City police chief went to the Fross' home and questioned the boy, who acknowledged shooting his grandparents because they allegedly called his mother a whore and "were speaking poorly about her", authorities said.

The state police were eventually called because they have jurisdiction in the township where the grandparents lived, about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Jerry Sandusky delivers one final hateful, haunting response to his victims

Bellefonte, Pennsylvania - Jerry Sandusky wore bright red jail garb on Tuesday, looking like a quarterback in practice, untouchable and protected.

Except Sandusky was about to get hit, a 30- to 60-year sentence coming from Judge John Cleland here at the Centre County Courthouse stemming from 45 guilty counts of sexual molestation. It's enough, given Pennsylvania's parole guidelines, to keep the 68-year-old Sandusky confined to prison for life.

Judge, defense and prosecution all agreed on that.

"Realistically, even if Jerry was to survive the 30 years, he won't be released," said Sandusky's own attorney, Joe Amendola.

Sandusky knew he was never going to be free again. He knew it that hot June night as the sheriff and a deputy hauled him away, a look of fright across his face, people shouting for him to rot in hell. Judging by his thinning frame, a result, his family said, of twice-a-day workouts in his isolation cell and a distaste for jail food, he's on his way to doing just that.

So, no, this crisp fall morning wasn't about a sentencing hearing, the outcome a mere formality.

Dying woman humiliated at Sea-Tac airport by TSA security search

A young, female leukemia patient says she was humiliated by a security search at Seattle's Sea-Tac airport last week. Security officials lifted bandages from recent surgeries, lifted her shirt to check feeding tubes and broke open an IV bag of saline solution, all in full view of other passengers, according to a report by Seattle's KOMO News.

The Detroit-area woman, Michelle Dunaj, who is dying of leukemia, was taking an "end of life" trip to Hawaii, flying through Seattle. She called her airline, Alaska Air, ahead of time to find out what the procedure would be for traveling with prescription medicines and to request a wheelchair, but, when she got to security, Dunaj said, "nothing happened as it should."

Airport security officials denied Dunaj's requests for a private search, saying, "the location is fine," she told KOMO News. "It shouldn't have happened that way-they should be more respectful of people," she said.

Sandusky gets 30-60 years prison for child abuse

Former Pennsylvania State University football coach Jerry Sandusky was ordered to spend at least 30 years in prison on Tuesday for sexually abusing at-risk boys for more than a decade, a sentence likely to keep him behind bars until he dies.

Defiantly maintaining his innocence, the 68-year-old retired defensive coordinator listened as several of his victims recounted their pain to the packed courtroom. Then, he told the court: "I did not do these alleged disgusting acts."

Sandusky stood motionless in a red prison jumpsuit, his back to the courtroom audience and his wife, Dottie, while Judge John Cleland handed down the 30- to 60- year sentence. It would make him at least 98 years old before being eligible for parole.

"Your crime is not only what you did to their bodies, but your assault on their psyche and their souls," Cleland told him at the hearing in Centre County Court. "The tragedy of this story is it is a story of betrayal. Some of your victims had a genuine affection for you.

"It is precisely that ability to conceal those vices from yourself and everyone else that in my view makes you dangerous," he said.

4,000 tons of shells explode in Central Russia, leave mushroom cloud-like plume of smoke, evacuations - controversy surrounding the explosions

    Image
More than 4,000 tons of shells exploded near a military testing ground some 40 kilometers from the city of Orenburg in Central Russia, prompting the mass evacuation of two nearby towns.

Those 4,000 tons included 1,379 tons of 100mm shells, 400 tons of air bombs and 2,300 tons of 280mm reactive shells, the head of the military investigative committee announced.

Witnesses recorded video of a massive plume of smoke rising into the air shortly after the explosions. Local residents said that the blasts were powerful enough to rattle windows dozens of kilometers away from the epicenter.

The press secretary for the regional government said that three residential buildings in the town of Pervomaisky were damaged in the incident, and that the force of the explosion blew out the windows of many local houses.

Local emergency services confirmed that the blast wave from the explosions also blew out the windows of schools, kindergartens and a hospital.

The explosions sparked a brushfire in 15-20 hectares of nearby dead grass. Authorities said that the fire does not threaten populated areas.
