One of Russia's most notorious criminal masterminds, Mafia godfather Aslan Usoyan, also known as 'Grandpa Hassan,' was shot dead by a sniper rifle in central Moscow on Wednesday, police said.

A sniper armed with a suppressed Spetsnaz rifle fired at Usoyan from the roof of a nearby house as the 75-year-old was walking out of a restaurant in Moscow's Arbat district.

His bodyguards failed to cover him in time, and the crime boss died from his injuries soon after he was taken to hospital.

"Usoyan was taken to Botkin Hospital in deep coma, unconscious, but was still breathing, and his heart was beating," a hospital source told Interfax. Ten minutes later, he failed to regain consciousness and died in the hospital's emergency surgery room, the source added.

A woman walking out of the restaurant at the same time as Usoyan was taken to the hospital with serious chest and hip injuries. She is currently in intensive care undergoing surgery, RIA Novosti quoted a public healthcare official as saying. The woman turned out to be "just a passerby" and according to Interfax worked for the restaurant in Povarskaya Street.

Collapse of apartment building in Egypt kills 23

© Photo: APEgyptians stand in rubble after an eight story building collapsed in Alexandria, Egypt, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. Egypt’s official MENA news agency says two people have been killed. It was not immediately known what caused the building to collapse, but violations of building specifications have been blamed in the past for similar accidents
An eight-story apartment building collapsed Wednesday in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, killing at least 22 people in the second deadly accident to hit the country in as many days.

The MENA state news agency said 11 people were also injured and that rescue teams were searching for survivors under the rubble. Military police from a nearby naval base had cordoned off the area to help the rescue operation. The collapse came a day after 19 police conscripts were killed when the last car of the train they were riding in jumped the tracks and smashed into another train just outside Cairo.

It was not immediately clear what caused the building to collapse in a poor district of the Mediterranean port city, but violations of building specifications have been blamed for similar accidents in the past. The governor of Alexandria, Mohammed Abbas Atta, told Egypt's official news agency that the building was constructed without a permit.

Abul Ezz el-Hariri, an opposition lawmaker from Alexandria, warned that hundreds of buildings in the city face the same fate, but that lax law enforcement following the ouster two years ago of Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak means that no action is being taken against building violations.

Would-be judge in hot water for suggesting rape victims enjoy it

If you're running for office, it's best not to make incendiary comments about rape. That appears to be as much the case in Indonesia as it is in the United States.

Daming Sanusi, a candidate for the Indonesian Supreme Court, has fueled outrage in the predominantly Muslim country by suggesting that rape victims enjoy being violated.

He made the comments Monday in front of a parliamentary commission hearing to determine if he was a fit for the top court, according to the official Indonesian news agency Antara.

In response to a question about whether the death penalty should be applied in rape cases, Daming reportedly said, "Consideration needs to be taken thoroughly for the imposition of death penalty for a rapist because in a rape case both the rapist and the victim enjoy it. "News of his comments quickly spread on social media, prompting anger, disgust and calls for Daming's candidature for the Supreme Court to be shot down.

London helicopter crash: Two die in Vauxhall crane accident

Image
A commercial helicopter crashed and fell on a busy street in central London during the morning rush hour, killing two people, injuring nine and creating scenes of fear and panic that eyewitnesses compared to a bomb explosion.

The helicopter clipped a crane attached to one of the tallest residential towers being built in London and then spun out of control, slamming into Wandsworth Road and setting cars and neighboring buildings on fire, according to spokesmen for police and fire brigades. Parts of the crane rained onto the road, with some pieces hitting the back of cars whose drivers ran for cover.

The helicopter crashed just south of the River Thames near the Underground and mainline train station at Vauxhall, and near the British spy agency MI6.

The helicopter's pilot was killed, and an additional person was killed by the crash, police said. Firefighters rescued one person from a burning car. One person remains in critical condition, five were hospitalized and four people were released after emergency officials treated them at the scene, according to police. Officials have ruled out terrorism.

"I thought it was a bomb," eyewitness Andrew Beadle told the BBC. "I literally looked up as I heard this massive noise and saw the helicopter blades go down."

Attempted suicide of raped Moroccan highlights plight of victims

Image
A young Moroccan house maid, whose dramatic suicide attempt has revived concerns about violence towards women and child workers in Morocco, said on Tuesday that her family rejected her after she was raped.

The 19-year-old women, who leapt from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Casablanca where she worked, had been employed as a domestic worker since the age of 14, said Omar Kindi, president of the NGO Insaf.

She was saved by a young man, who caught her as she fell and was killed in doing so, with the incident filmed by a neighbour and posted on the Internet.

"In 2010, she was raped in Marrakesh, prompting a dramatic change in her already sad life," said Kindi, who visited her in hospital and whose NGO supports women and children in distress.

After 19 years behind bars, man sues Chicago police for framing him

After nearly two decades of imprisonment for a murder he didn't commit, a Chicago man says he was framed by a group of policemen who bribed court witnesses to go along with their story and has filed a lawsuit against the perpetrators.

Rodell Sanders, 49, has spent years trying to convince the court of his innocence and was exonerate after 19 years imprisonment. The former prisoner is now taking the Chicago Heights Police Department and several of its officers to court for his wrongful conviction and the bribery that landed him in jail.

Sanders was arrested and charged for a 1993 murder in which a group of men robbed and fatally shot one of two people who they found sleeping in a car.

He was accused of being part of the group, even though he always claimed to have been "nowhere nearby", and was instead playing cards at his friend's apartment.

"There was no physical evidence linking Sanders to the crime. Rather, the only purported evidence against Mr. Sanders were two purchased and patently false witness identifications," states the complaint. "These wrongful misidentifications were procured through manipulation and bribes by members of the City of Chicago Heights's infamously corrupt police department."
