How The Sun made up 'scary Russian ultras' captions and deceived Serbian photographer

UK tabloids have been working hard to scare football fans from going to the World Cup, because every Russian is a brutal ultra out for blood. Now The Sun has hit a new low, blatantly taking a photographer's work out of context.

A headline in The Sun on Saturday thunders: "ULTRA VIOLENCE" in capital letters. The article itself is mostly a collection of photos, which it says "reveal life inside Moscow's gritty underworld, where hardcore football fans and bare knuckle boxers rule the streets." Some incredibly insightful captions cooked up by the tabloid are attached.

Unluckily for The Sun, the person who took the photos decided not to stay silent and shared his disappointment with RT. He says the photos have been "clearly taken out of context."

17 Mexican politicians busted after registering as transgender to avoid election quota

Politicians don't like to be defeated, so when 17 of them were barred from entering a Mexican election due to a gender quota, they simply registered as transgender. However, their plan was foiled and their applications rejected.

The 17 candidates in Oaxaca, although innovative, are not transgender at all, according to local media cited by Reuters. Instead, they were part of a plan by various political parties to fill spots with males after they were not able to find enough females.

The electoral institute for the state confirmed that the candidates have been temporarily blocked due to "suspected irregularities,"adding that it "will be vigilant that the constitutional principle of equality is adhered to, and that women have effective access to public office."

Britain's top football police chief, Mark Roberts, has slammed tabloid scaremongering of fan danger during the Russia 2018 World Cup in a meeting with top UK MPs.

In a Foreign Affairs Select Committee held in UK Parliament on Thursday, Deputy Chief Constable Roberts gave evidence that kicked tabloid headlines predicting a "bloodbath" between fans into touch.

"We've had a great number of meetings with them and every time we've met them, there is a consistent reassurance that their aspiration is to put on a safe event that shows Russia to the best of its abilities," Roberts told the committee.

Canada: Texters who distract drivers could be held liable in accidents, says insurance expert

insurance expert Canada Jordan Solway
Montreal - An insurance and legal expert says texters could be held liable for any damages if they message someone they know is driving and that person has an accident.

"There's an increasing public safety issue of operators of vehicles who are distracted while driving," lawyer Jordan Solway said in a recent interview.

"And if you contribute in the same way as if you're in the vehicle, and you interfere with their driving of the vehicle, you could be held responsible for that injured third party."

Solway, vice-president of claim at Travelers Canada, pointed to a New Jersey court ruling from 2013 that said the sender of a text who causes a driver to become distracted and have an accident may be held liable.

The case involved an 18-year-old driver's girlfriend who texted him about 25 seconds before his pickup truck crossed a median and seriously injured a motorcyclist and his wife. Both bikers lost their left legs as a result of the 2009 accident.

Online posts "against" religion and transgenderism may now receive six-year prison sentences in UK

People promoting "hostility" towards a religion or the transgendered online could get much harsher sentences, of up to six years in jail, especial if they have a large online audience according to new proposals.

The Sentencing Council for England and Wales has drafted changes to public order offences, including anyone perceived as targeting online a "protected characteristics" including "race; sex; disability; age; sexual orientation; religion or belief; pregnancy and maternity; and gender reassignment."

The most severe punishments will be handed to those "in a position of trust, authority or influence and abuses their position to stir up hatred," such as political leaders or figureheads and anyone whose offences are "persistent."

Comment: What utter nonsense. This will be hopelessly abused. Just look at what is already happening. A veteran UK TV show host was recently forced to quit for not apologizing for something one of his guests said. His bosses told him he had to apologize on air, even though absolutely no one complained or was offended.

If an "offender was a member of, or was associated with, a group promoting hostility based on race or religion," their sentence will also be harsher.

Comment: So watch out if you are "associated with" a group "perceived as" promoting "hostility" to a certain race or religion. Sounds fair.

The Sentencing Council believes that the use of social media, YouTube, and other "websites" to stir hatred is a growing problem - despite the number of prosecutions remain relatively low.

"Volumes of these offences are extremely low and there have been no offenders sentenced for some offences," the Sentencing Council said.

Gun manufacturer's sever ties with Dick's Sporting Goods for promoting gun control

Dick's Sporting Goods gun control
Last month, Dick's Sporting Goods announced that they hired a lobbyist to advocate for gun control. Now, multiple gun manufacturers have severed ties with the sporting goods company.

Mossberg

Mossberg will no longer accept future orders from Dick's Sporting Goods or Field & Stream, a subsidiary of Dick's. The manufacturer is also reviewing any current contractual obligations they have with Dick's.

"It has come to our attention that Dick's Sporting Goods recently hired lobbyists on Capitol Hill to promote additional gun control," Iver Mossberg, Chief Executive Officer of O.F. Mossberg & Sons, said in a statement. "Make no mistake, Mossberg is a staunch supporter of the U.S. Constitution and our Second Amendment rights, and we fully disagree with Dick's Sporting Goods' recent anti-Second Amendment actions."

Comment: Not a very savvy business strategy on the part of the owners, it seems.

'This is her land': Kilauea's eruption comes with a cultural connection to Pele

Whether you believe in local folklore or not, in the eyes of the Hawaiian culture, Kilauea's eruption is the work of the fire goddess Pele.
Pele goddess
To many, she's revered and respected. Many locals understand that the wrath of Pele can be destructive, but it is a part of nature that is not to be disturbed.

"We have learned to live with her and to be intimate with Pele and these forces," Dr. Jonathan Osorio, Dean of UH Manoa's Hawai'inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge said. "It doesn't mean that life is always going to be smooth. From time to time, it's dangerous and from time to time it's tragic, but it's a part of being in this place to live with it."

A Miami-Dade police officer was caught on CCTV hitting his 14-year-old daughter with a belt and dragging her by the hair at her school while administrators looked on without intervening.

Officer Raymond Rosario, 44, was called to Pinecrest Cove Academy in Miami by the school on March 19 after the teenager was reportedly disrespectful to her teacher, according to a report on his arrest. After he arrived, his daughter was called to the school's main office, where Rosario was filmed grabbing the girl by her hair, punching her in the face, and hitting her with a belt.

The surveillance footage also shows at least two workers in the office looking on at the outburst without intervening.

On Friday, the school released a statement through Academica, the charter school's management company, that only referred to one witness, saying she was pregnant and was hesitant to get involved in case the parent, known to school staff as a police officer, was armed.

Shocking footage of a department store's security guard tackling and punching a teen who was suspected of shoplifting at the lower Manhattan, New York premises has led to the employee being charged with assault.

Video of the incident, which happened Friday night, shows the teen being pinned to the ground by three Century 21 security officers as the youth shouts out, "What are you doing, I'm 18, I can't breathe." One of the security personnel appears to strike the teen with his fist.

In a longer video of the incident, also captured by Brian Fraser and posted on a friend's Twitter account, security can be heard telling onlookers to move away for their own safety as a female friend threatens to call police.

"What are you doing to this black man? I'm calling the cops," she shouts as the alleged thief, identified as Victor Roberson, is dragged along the sidewalk.

The salaries of CEOs have ballooned over the past 50 years, extending huge gaps with those of their employees. Today, so-called 'fat cats' can earn the annual salary of a typical worker by lunchtime.

In its latest filing, Walmart disclosed that company CEO Doug McMillon's total compensation rose two percent in 2017 to $22.8 million. Meanwhile, the firm's median employee earned $19,177 in the same period.

The largest chunk of McMillon's compensation came in the form of stock awards. He has held the company's top job since 2014.

Walmart, which is the largest private-sector employer in the US, has around 2.3 million global employees, including full-time and part-time workers.
