Society's Child
As in "no one could have known" that by shutting down life as we know it to focus obsessively on a virus mostly affecting what is still a relatively small number of people at the end of their lives (yes, oh squeamish ones we must summon the courage to talk about Quality Adjusted Life Years when making public policy) we probably would:
1. Cause economic devastation and hence excess deaths, suicides, divorces depressions in much larger numbers than those killed by the virus.
2. Provide an already monopolistic and predatory online retailing establishment with competitive advantages in terms of capital reserves and market share that will make it virtually impossible at any time in the near or medium future for the country's and the world's small and even medium-sized businesses to ever catch up to them. And that this will plunge huge sectors of the world-wide economy into serf-like ruin, with all that this portends in terms of additional death and human suffering.
3. Cause greatly increased misery and countless additional deaths in the so-called Global South where many people, rightly or wrongly, depend on the consumption patterns of us relatively fortunate sit-at-homers to make it through the week.
Such a surrender to constricted narratives cuts across all classes and income brackets. Neither the most educated nor the least uneducated retain any special advantage in the face of powerful consensus-shaping propaganda.
PROPAGANDA is, of course, the life-blood of authoritarian control. Maintaining the economic, governmental and scientific frameworks of a modern technocratic "operating system" would be impossible without propaganda's divisive assault. When truth is seen as a liability to power, it must always be disallowed, with all instances of it effectively penalized.
Radio, television, the Internet and their constant enabler, popular "science" — operate today as their own religions, reliant for their success upon the unquestioning devotion of the masses. The currency that we use to pay for admission to the electronic spectacle is our attention, and in such hyper-mediated times as these, those charges mount up exponentially, until we generally find ourselves at some point, broke and spiritually exhausted by soul-crushing denial and disconnection.
The late pedophile started the presidential name-dropping as soon as he first "groomed" the accuser, only identified as Jane Doe 15, on his so-called "Lolita Express" private jet, a lawsuit filed last year said.
"Epstein made clear to Jane Doe 15 how powerful he was. He made a point of mentioning that he was close with Bill Clinton," claimed the lawsuit against Epstein's estate.
Epstein immediately took the then-teen to the bedroom on his jet for the 2004 trip to his New Mexico ranch, the filing said. He bragged about women sleeping at his feet on a mattress that covered the whole room, which "made her immediately think of slaves," the filing said.
Throughout, he kept reminding her how close he was to some of the world's most powerful people, she says. "When I chose a seat on the jet, Jeffrey told me that his good friend, Bill Clinton, always chose to sit" there, she previously said at a press conference.
Some 50 percent of Americans who aren't in a relationship aren't seeking a committed partner or trying to find dates, Pew reported on Thursday, based on polling that was done in October 2019. As for those open to romance, only 14 percent said they're looking specifically for a relationship. A total of 10 percent want casual dates only, while 26 percent are open to either dating or relationships.
While 61 percent of single American males are looking for dates or relationships, only 38 percent of women considered themselves to be in the dating market. Pew said the most common reasons given were that respondents had more important priorities or that they just enjoyed single life.
Such lifestyles are also becoming more socially acceptable. Only 22 percent of American singles said they feel at least some pressure from friends to date, while 32 percent acknowledged pressure from family. Singles also may be discouraged by the difficulty of the task: 65 percent of single women said it's hard to find someone looking for the same type of relationship as they want, compared with 45 percent of males. Some 56 percent of women respondents said it's tough to find someone who meets their expectations, versus 35 percent of males.
The MeToo movement hasn't helped the romance cause. A total of 65 percent of single men and 43 percent of female respondents said increased focus on sexual harassment has made it more difficult to know how to interact with someone on a date.
The latest "Covid-19 prevention checklist" issued by Democratic Governor Janet Mills lays out a series of rules one might expect amid the pandemic - such as good hygiene and social distancing. But one guideline for restaurants has raised eyebrows, demanding that servers don collared face shields reminiscent of those fixed to dogs after a medical procedure.
"Front-of-house staff may wear a face shield in lieu of a face covering only if the shield is designed to be worn inverted, attaching below the face (e.g. as a collar) and open at the top of the shield, with the shield extending above the eyes and laterally to the ears," the guidelines say.
Face shields that are open at the bottom, directing breath downward, are not acceptable replacements for face coverings for front-of-house staff. While the rule only applies to those who decline to wear a typical face mask, netizens have hounded the Mills administration over the outlandish guideline, mocking the collared shields as demeaning "cones of shame."
"Let me guess, Governor [Mills] is a Democrat. Dog cones for the people. We call that the cone of shame in our house because my dog hates it. Imagine how people feel wearing this stupid thing," one user said on Twitter.
From initial investigations, it seems that the victim was sexually assaulted in another location in addition to the initial report of the gang-rape in her hotel, according to N12.
The special investigative team which was put together to handle the violent affair said, according to N12, that there is no indication yet that 30 people stayed in one room, but that there were a multiplicity of suspects staying in one room.
Meanwhile, her social media profiles were leaked online and the victim's team asked to have her moved to a safe location out of fear that the attackers or their families may attempt to threaten her.

US actress Rose McGowan gives opening remarks to the audience at the Women's March / Women's Convention in Detroit, Mich., on Oct. 27, 2017.
Rose McGowan blasted Joe Biden and the Democratic Party on the final day of the Democratic National Convention in a series of tweets in which she dubbed them all "frauds."
The actress and activist, 46, who has stood behind Biden assault accuser Tara Reade and blasted Hollywood stars for their support of the Democratic presidential nominee, made her distaste for Biden loud and clear as she ripped his speech in which he described America as a "cloak of darkness" under Trump.
"Give people light. Those are words for our time. The current president has cloaked America in darkness for much too long. Too much anger. Too much fear. Too much division," Biden said on Thursday night.
"You are the season of darkness. @JoeBiden @dnc You are monsters. You are frauds. You are the lie," McGowan reacted on the social media platform.
Flight attendants ordered Chaya Bruck of Midwood to get off the Newark-bound plane after her daughter Dina refused to keep the face covering on — and when the desperate mom tried to explain the tot wasn't cooperating, the attendants told all of the passengers to get off the aircraft.
"It was horrible, the whole experience was traumatizing," Bruck told the Daily News from Orlando International Airport, where she and her children were still stranded Wednesday afternoon.

According to research conducted by the Levada Center, 42 percent of Muscovites oppose the installation of facial recognition cameras, with 47 percent supporting it. The Russian capital has an extensive citywide CCTV system, allowing the authorities to track and find criminals wanted by law enforcement. In recent months, the cameras were used to detect and punish citizens for breaking the rules under the city's strict coronavirus self-isolation regime.
The research revealed that those who supported the installation of cameras mainly explained that they help to combat crime (70 percent), with another quarter (27 percent) saying they are necessary for safety. Opponents of the facial recognition system cited "total surveillance" (53 percent) and the violation of citizens' freedoms (39 percent) as their main complaints.
Comment: Whether they really do help combat crime is still up for debate although evidently those in support of them think that they do.
Comment: Ultimately it's not the technologies that are the problem but who is in control of them:

In this March 21, 2016, file photo, the Flint Water Plant water tower is seen in Flint, Mich. Multiple news outlets report Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020, that the state of Michigan has reached a $600 million agreement to compensate Flint residents whose health was damaged by lead-tainted drinking water.
Details will be released later this week, according to the attorney, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about it ahead of an official announcement. The settlement was first reported by The Detroit News, MLive.com and WXZY-TV.
It is intended to resolve all legal actions against the state for its role in a disaster that made the impoverished, majority-Black city a nationwide symbol of governmental mismanagement, the attorney said.
The offices of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel have been negotiating for more than 18 months with lawyers for thousands of Flint residents who have filed suits against the state.
