A multi-carriage train carrying oil has derailed in the Columbia River gorge, just outside the town of Mosier, some 68 miles east of Portland. Smoke from the resulting fire is visible from miles away. There are no reports of injuries.

Mosier residents are being warned that a 1-mile mandatory evacuation could be put into effect at any time, KGW-TV reported.

The train was operated by Union Pacific, according to The Oregonian. "I can confirm it's ours," Union Pacific spokesman Justin Jacobs told the newspaper. Union Pacific hauls both the thick, waxy Utah crude and the Bakken crude from North Dakota through the Columbia River gorge, The Oregonian reported.

Multiple cars have derailed near the Rock Creek overpass, just west of town, KOIN-TV reported.

Union Pacific later confirmed that eleven cars from the 96-car train were involved in the accident, and that oil was released from at least one car. The train was hauling Bakken crude, the company said.

At least one dead, seven trapped in Thailand as beach resort hotel collapses

Thailand's Siam Beach Hotel
A two-story hotel at a beach resort on Thailand's Ko Chang island partly collapsed on Saturday morning, burying several families, including a two-year-old child, local police said. At least one foreign tourist has died and seven remain trapped.

The Siam Beach Hotel is a popular destination for tourists on an island located in Trat Province in the Gulf of Thailand.

Koh Chang police chief Pol Col Arwat Pibulsawat told local outlet The Nation that a two-year-old child was among the trapped tourists.

Social media reports suggested that torrential rains had led to the collapse, and district chief Kamthon Wehon speculated the deluge had caused the land to subside, adding that the hotel is built next to a mountain.

Rescuers, who have already freed several tourists from the rubble, are working at the scene.

While most 10-year-olds go to school, play with their friends and enjoy their childhood, Janna Jihad, from Palestine is busy becoming the youngest amateur reporter in Palestine. Sputnik spoke in an exclusive interview with Janna.

A resident of Nabi Saleh, a Palestinian village north of the West Bank city of Ramallah, Janna has been a witness to the tragedies of war from a very young age.

She started covering the local events and unveiling Israeli violations in Palestine after her friend was killed by the IDF. "I began three years ago, when I was seven years old. I participated in rallies near our house in Ramallah, precisely in the rally of 'Nabi Salih' (The prophet of ancient Arabia) in the village of Nabi Salih."

"It was a rally against the establishment of the Israeli settlement in the area. Our house is the first house in the entrance of the village of Nabi Salih; the IDF always reach there. I have loved journalism since I was a kid; I began shooting the rallies and demonstrations with my mother's cell-phone and commenting on what I film." Janna explained that by filming it she is showing how the IDF attack participants during demonstrations.

"With the help of my mother I managed to publish these videos on social networks, the thing was met with significant resonance and this pushed me to continue even further," Janna explained.

Comment: Transforming such a horrifying experience to something positive, this young lady gives a whole new meaning to the proverbial "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

Russians identify United States, Ukraine and Turkey as most hostile to their motherland

Russian people
The United States, Ukraine and Turkey top the nations that Russians see as most hostile to their motherland with Belarus, Kazakhstan and China traditionally seen as friendliest, a recent poll has shown.

According to the results of the research, conducted by independent pollster the Levada Center, reports that 72 percent of Russians identified the US as the country that is most hostile toward Russia. Ukraine was second with 48 percent and Turkey came third with 29 percent (researchers allowed every respondent to name several countries in response to this question). The opinion about the US remained approximately the same year-on-year, with 73 percent of Russians seeing it as the most hostile nation in 2015, but Ukraine's image deteriorated, with a higher proportion than last year's 37 percent seeing it as an enemy last year. Only 1 percent of the Russian public named Turkey as an opponent in 2015.

UN blacklists Saudi-led coalition for its crimes against children in Yemen

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has slammed the Saudi-led coalition for "killing and maiming" children in Yemen, adding it to an annual blacklist of countries and armed groups that have violated children's rights in conflict.

"Grave violations against children increased dramatically as a result of the escalating conflict," a report released by Ban on Thursday states.

"In Yemen, owing to the very large number of violations attributed to the two parties, the Houthis/Ansar Allah and the Saudi Arabia-led coalition are listed for killing and maiming and attacks on schools and hospitals," the secretary-general stated in the document.

According to the report, the coalition was responsible for 60 percent of child deaths and injuries in Yemen last year, killing 510 people and wounding 667 others.

The coalition was also behind half of the attacks carried out on schools and hospitals in Yemen.

The UN report added the coalition to its blacklist of groups that "engage in the recruitment and use of children, sexual violence against children, the killing and maiming of children, attacks on schools and/or hospitals and attacks or threats of attacks against protected personnel, and the abduction of children."

Comment: The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have been committing horrific war crimes in Yemen, conducting airstrikes on schools, hospitals, markets and residential neighborhoods. And due to the actions of the U.S. and Saudis, Yemen is experiencing mass starvation. The fact Saudi Arabia leads the UN Human Rights Council is a cruel psychopathic joke.

10 key facts about atheists

atheism

Estimating the number of atheists in the U.S. is complicated. Some adults who describe themselves as atheists also say they believe in God or a universal spirit. At the same time, some people who identify with a religion (e.g., say they are Protestant, Catholic or Jewish) also say they do not believe in God.

But one thing is for sure: Along with the rise of religiously unaffiliated Americans (many of whom believe in God), there has been a corresponding increase in the number of atheists. As nonbelievers and others gather in Washington, D.C., for the "Reason Rally," here are key facts about atheists and their beliefs:

The husband of a Georgia assistant attorney general was found shot to death in a car in northeast Atlanta early Wednesday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Officers received a call about 1 a.m. Wednesday about someone shot at the intersection of Rankin Street and Boulevard, Atlanta police said.

A witness told officers he became suspicious when the driver didn't drive off at the green light and went to see if he was OK.

That's when he found blood inside the car and noticed the driver, later identified as 34-year-old Shahriar Zolfaghari of Mableton, had been shot. Zolfaghari is the husband of Georgia Assistant Attorney General Camila Wright, said Betty Honey, an investigator with the medical examiner's office.

It's not just Brexit: Greece, Spain, and France are also on the brink

It could be a wild weekend in late June if all the crises come to a head.

The hedge funds will have prepped their positions. The investment banks will have ordered in pizza and extra coffee ready for a long night of dealing. Exit polls will have been commissioned, and currency traders will be ready to buy or sell sterling GBPEUR, -0.9509% as soon as they start getting a clear idea of whether Britain has voted to stay in or get out of the European Union on June 23.

But hold on. In fact, it is not just the risk of Brexit that the markets need to be worrying about. In truth, the real drama is going to come over a long and difficult weekend, leading up to potentially wild day in European assets on Monday, June 27.

Why? Over that weekend, Spanish voters will go back to the polls in another attempt to settle on a government, which may well see the far-left Podemos group make big gains. Greece will be struggling to find the money to pay back its latest debts. And if the strikes in France escalate, the country may be close to running out of its strategic fuel reserves — and approaching a total meltdown.

Brexit, Spexit, Grexit, and Frexit could all collide. The result? A car crash for the European markets.

Americans not in the labor force soar to record 94.7 million

US labor participation rate chart
So much for that much anticipated rebound in the participation rate. After it had managed to rise for 5 months in a row through March, hitting the highest level in one year, the disenchantment with working has returned, and the labor force participation rate promptly slumped in both April and May, sliding 0.4% in the past two months to 62.60%, just shy of its 35 year low of 62.4% hit last October. This can be seen in the surge of Americans who are no longer in the labor force, who spiked by 664,000 in May, hitting an all time high of 94.7 million. As a result of this the US labor force shrank by over 400,000 to 158,466K, down from 158,924K a month ago, and helped the unemployment rate tumble to 4.7%, the lowest level since 2007.

Adding the number of unemployed workers to the people not in the labor force, there are now over 102 million Americans who are either unemployed or no longer looking for work.

Comment: Amazing statistic when one considers the US population is around 323,931,054 results in almost 30% true unemployment.
