A former Dallas accountant condemned for fatally shooting his two young daughters while their mother listened helplessly on the phone was put to death Thursday night in Texas but not before taunting her one last time.

John David Battaglia was executed for the May 2001 killings of his 9-year-old daughter, Faith, and her 6-year-old sister, Liberty. Battaglia and his wife had separated, and he shot the girls at his Dallas apartment during a scheduled visit.

Battaglia smiled as the mother of his slain children, Mary Jean Pearle, and other witnesses to his execution walked into the death chamber viewing area.

Asked by the warden if he had a final statement, the inmate replied: "No," then changed his mind. "Well, hi, Mary Jean," he said, looking and smiling at his ex-wife. "I'll see y'all later. Bye."

Two Georgia sisters have been indicted in the fatal spanking and beating of a 3-year-old with a baseball bat for taking a cupcake from the kitchen.

The Fulton County District Attorney's Office says LaShirley Morris, 27, and Glenndria Morris, 25, were formally charged Tuesday with two counts of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty in the first-degree.

Authorities say it happened Oct. 21. According to the indictment, LaShirley Morris used the bat to hit KeJuan Mason repeatedly in the head while her sister - the child's legal guardian - used her hand to spank the little boy.

Glenndria Morris gained custody of Mason and his twin brother after his parents lost custody of the children. The children's mother said she lost custody when she became homeless, but was working to get the kids back, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

Professor claims Americans who practice yoga contribute to white supremacy

White people who do a downward-facing dog are contributing to a "system of power, privilege, and oppression," according to a Michigan State University professor.

Shreena Gandhi, a religious studies professor at Michigan State, claims in an article she recently co-authored that Americans who practice yoga are contributing to white supremacy and promote the "yoga industrial complex."

White Americans should learn yoga's history, acknowledge the cultural appropriation they engage in and possibly reduce the cost of yoga classes for poor people, a group that often includes people of color and "recent immigrants, such as Indian women to whom this practice rightfully belongs," Gandhi argued.

Governor of Ankara Ercan Topaca has announced that the gas leak was behind the blast that rocked one of the prestigious districts of the Turkish capital.

According to Topaca, the blast took place in a boiler room in one of the facilities of tax office in the Çukurambar ​​district. He said that the building was empty and so far there's no information about wounded people.

Initially, a Sputnik correspondent in Ankara reported that a sound of explosion was heard in the city. Social media users said that the blast was heard in many districts of the Turkish capital. There were also reports suggesting the gas cylinder exploded in one of the office buildings.

The video footage from outdoor surveillance cameras was studied and it turned out that a suspicious man entered the building and left a bag, which presumably contained an explosive device, at the entrance," the governor's office said in a statement.

According to the statement, police on Friday launched the pursuit of the perpetrator of the attack identified during the investigation, as well as two of his accomplices.

"During the pursuit, one of the suspects, who carried false ID papers, was killed. He was identified as Ersen Ertogan born in 1991 in the province of Mardin, who was trained in a camp in a YPG-held area in Syria and entered Turkey illegally," the statement said.

Iceland calling for amendments banning boys' circumcision, introducing 6-year jail term for offenders

MPs in Iceland have proposed legislative amendments to outlaw circumcision for boys, a common practice in the Jewish and Muslim communities. If passed, anyone performing the procedure may be jailed for six years.

Members of at least five political parties, including the Progressive Party, the Pirate party and the Left Green, are calling for amendments to the existing Criminal Code. Their proposed legislation says that anyone found guilty of damaging the health of a child or a woman by "removing sexual organs, in whole or in part, shall be jailed for six years."

The draft clearly rejects the notion that the law should accommodate circumcision on religious grounds. "While it is certainly the right of the parents to give their children guidance when it comes to religion, such a right can never exceed the rights of the child," the bill states.

"Circumcision involves permanent interventions into a child's body that can cause severe pain, also such an operation involves a risk of infections and other problems," the proposed measure says further.

A minivan plowed into pedestrians in downtown Shanghai Friday morning leaving 18 people injured, three of them seriously.

The minivan was carrying gas tanks and caught fire during the incident, according to witnesses cited by China's People's Daily newspaper. The cause of the crash is being investigated.

Fire trucks were dispatched to the scene and the blaze was put out.

Same-sex couples will now be included in school textbooks, according to one of the United Kingdom's largest education companies. Pearson will update their products to ensure their resources are "LGBT inclusive."

A new secondary-school handbook advising teachers how they can make the curriculum more inclusive for LGBT students has been distributed by the charity, Stonewall. It is sponsored by education giant, Pearson, which owns the exam board EdExcel and publishes thousands of school textbooks.

The 28 member states of the European Union (EU) have a total debt burden of €12.5 trillion, which could be even bigger, according to the latest figures from the EU statistics office, Eurostat.

Data shows that in the third quarter of 2017 the EU's debt-to-GDP ratio fell from 82.9 percent to 82.5 percent when compared with the same quarter of the previous year. Greece's general government-debt-to-GDP ratio was the highest in the eurozone, at 177.4 percent. It was followed by Italy (134.1 percent) and Portugal (130.8 percent).

The Veterans Affairs Department last week was hit by three highly critical letters of referral to Congress and the president in whistleblower cases probed by the Office of Special Counsel.

The separate cases documented staff failures at VA medical centers to respond to reports of unfair barriers to patients needing organ transplants, a slow response to unsanitary conditions in spinal cord care, and an unethical procurement of landscaping supplies.

At the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio, nurse and program manager Jamie McBride had disclosed problems with procedures for referring meritorious patients to the life-saving Solid Organ Transplant Program.

The program's structure "causes financial and other hardships to veterans and their families by requiring them to relocate for months to receive treatment," Special Counsel Henry Kerner said in a statement on his Jan. 26 letter to President Trump. McBride alleged that communication problems between VA medical centers and transplant centers delay care, and that the transplant centers apply inconsistent and overly restrictive eligibility criteria for liver and kidney transplants. He cited a low level of specialty care and an "unwillingness" to promptly perform living donor kidney transplants.

Cuba strengthens relations with China with 27th International Book Fair

Members of at least 40 nations are taking part in Cuba's 27th annual International Book Fair, FIL, which kicked off Thursday.

At least 140 exhibitors from 22 countries will put up their stalls at the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress along with a few other locations in the capital city of Havana. Out of the 62 publishers exhibiting their publications, institutes from Peru, Spain and Panama have the largest concentration of representatives.

The fair, which began in 1937, also aims to build relations and bridge the gap between China and Cuba.

Cuba was the first Latin American nation to establish diplomatic relations with China in 1960.

More than 220 Chinese writers, artists, officials and representatives of Chinese publishers have confirmed their attendance. The South Asian country, which will be participating at the fair for the first time, has also been named the guest of honor by the FIL committee.
