Brazilian vice-consul to Russia shoots armed robber in his car near Olympic Park as Slovenian cyclists passed by

The Russian vice-consul in Rio de Janeiro dramatically shot dead an armed mugger who had tried to hold him up in his car - just after the Olympic torch relay had passed by on the last day before the Rio 2016 opening ceremony.

Marcos Cesar Feres Braga, a Brazilian lawyer who holds the vice-consul post at the Russian consulate, reportedly grabbed the attacker and pulled him into his BMW X6 after he [the robber] had smashed the car window and pointed a gun at him, demanding he hand over his watch. A struggle ensued inside the diplomat's car until he managed to grab the assailant's gun, which he used to shoot him dead at point blank range, according to police. Mr Braga is trained in jiu-jitsu and was traveling with his wife and daughter at the time, local media outlet Globo reported.

The mugger, who was on a motorbike with another man, struck at around midday as Braga was waiting for traffic to start moving again after the Olympic torch had passed by on Avenida das Americas in the Barra da Tijuca district of Rio, close to the Olympic Park and athletes village.

Witnesses said that at the moment of the shooting Olympic cyclists from Slovenia were passing by on a training exercise.

Comment: The media either a) did not fact-check and thought it was an actual Russian diplomat, or b) published on hearsay for a headline grabber. Either way, the facts in this case are becoming clear the incident is unrelated to any Russian personnel in Rio. Is this too kind? Was it instead an intended smear?

On June 7, it was reported that British citizen Grace "Khadija" Dare had brought her 4-year-old son, Isa Dare, to live in Sweden, in order to benefit from free health care. In February, the boy was featured in an ISIS video, blowing up four prisoners in a car (pictured above). The boy's father, a jihadist with Swedish citizenship, was killed fighting for ISIS.

The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå), released a report which showed that 11,007 people have been sentenced to deportation after being convicted of crimes. However, the report makes no mention of how many of these individuals have actually been deported. The number of convictions that include deportation has decreased, despite an increasing crime rate among foreigners in Sweden. In the 1970s, about 500 a year were sentenced to deportation; in 2004, the number had risen to 1,074, but in 2014 only 644 received this verdict.

Not only are fewer people sentenced to deportation -- but more and more, those who are to be deported refuse to leave the country. In October of last year, daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reported that 30,000 people whose asylum application had been rejected and were scheduled for deportation, had gone missing. The police say they lack the resources to track down these illegals. Patrik Engström, head of the border police at the Department of National Operations (NOA), told the paper: "We put these people on the wanted list, but we do not engage in an active search for them. We wait for tips and things like that."

Baltimore, MD - On Monday, August 1, at 9:30 am, police arrived at the Carriage Hill Apartments to serve a warrant on Korryn Gaines, 23, for failing to appear on charges stemming from a traffic stop in March, which Gaines recorded.

Shortly after arriving on scene police learned that there was a firearm in the house, so they brought in a SWAT team to deal with the situation. Officers initially knocked on the door, identified themselves as police officers, and after 10 minutes with no response obtained a key to the apartment from the landlord, according to police.

Upon entry to the residence, Gaines was found sitting in on the floor with her son and pointing a shotgun at the entering officers and informed them that she would shoot them if they did not leave the premises. Officers then retreated to a hallway and called for backup.

The video below appears to show officers dressed in tactical gear near the entrance to Gaines home, but it isn't clear at what point during the standoff this video was recorded.

A standoff then began which lasted throughout most of the day until the police decided to raid the home with guns blazing, killing Gaines and injuring her 5-year-old child. Police spokeswoman, Elise Armacost claimed that Gaines repeatedly pointed her gun at officers and made threatening remarks.

"If you don't leave, I'm going to kill you," Gaines allegedly said at 3 p.m., according to Armacost.

It was at this point that one officer opened fire, to which Gaines then returned fire, with police then opening fire again, striking her several times and killing her as she cradled her 5-year-old son. The boy was injured in the exchange but was reportedly in stable condition.

Pakistanis are shaming Karachi authorities over their poisoning of at least 700 stray dogs. City officials counter that the canines bite thousands of people yearly, and there is no other way to curb the problem.

The poisoning of dogs got a fierce reaction from social network users, with most of them being outraged at the authorities' actions.

"Just bloody horrible", "Spread the word. Shame on Karachi authorities!", "No more cruelty" were just a few among the angry messages.

A Black Lives Matter delegation arrives from the US to Samarian village of Bilin near Ramallah, Palestine Administration, to protest with Palestinian activists against Israeli occupation.

The official platform of the Black Lives Matter movement has triggered criticism from Jewish organizations for accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians and calling the country "an apartheid state."

T'ruah, a rabbinic human rights organization, has slammed the platform, published earlier this week, expressing dismay at the use of the term 'genocide.'

"We are extremely dismayed at the decision to refer to the Israeli occupation as genocide," it said in a statement published Wednesday.

"While we agree that the occupation violates the human rights of Palestinians, and has caused too many deaths, the Israeli government is not carrying out a plan intended to wipe out the Palestinians. There is no basis for comparing this situation to the [other] genocides of the 20th century."

Carmageddon: 422 vehicles destroyed in inferno at Portuguese music festival

An outdoor music festival in Portugal had to be suspended after a raging fire turned two parking lots into an apocalyptic scene of charred and twisted metal.

According to organizers of the week-long Andancas festival, the concert grounds underwent a "rapid" evacuation on Wednesday when a mystery blaze spread to hundreds of revelers' cars.

Some 422 vehicles were completely destroyed in the fire which broke out around 3pm, reports Lisbon-based newspaper Publico.

Comment: The fire was apparently fed by dry grass and high temperatures, and fueled by the cars' tires and gasoline tanks.

Even though firefighters reportedly arrived and extinguished the blaze within an hour, the damage was significant; the Portuguese Insurance Association met with emergency personnel immediately. Event organizers reportedly have insurance to cover the damage.

However, a representative of the Consumer Protection Association told a newspaper that this is the first time in the European Union that more than 400 cars were destroyed and the incident will likely lead to creating new rules by insurers.

As extreme weather related events continue around the globe, it is likely that more insurance companies will 'create new rules' to adapt to these increasing 'earth changes'.

An NYPD officer, already under investigation for posting a series of racist rants on his Facebook page, is now being reprimanded over footage of him inappropriately dancing with a woman while on duty.

Detective Gregory Gordon, 33, was in uniform when he was filmed ferociously grinding against a dancer during a West Indian Day Parade in 2011.

An 18-year-old recently arrested on terrorism charges in Arizona has the mental capacity of a child and had been in regular contact with the FBI for years before his arrest, according to family members, former teachers, and medical documents reviewed by The Intercept. Mahin Khan was arrested July 1 on charges of plotting to support the Taliban as well as the militant group the Islamic State and commit acts of terrorism in the local community.

People close to Khan say that he suffered from serious mental and emotional illnesses and that the FBI was aware of this, having met with him regularly since he was a young teenager. According to medical records and statements from family members, he was first referred to the FBI after sending a threatening email to one of his teachers at the age of 15. After an initial meeting with the FBI, he spent 45 days at an inpatient psychiatric facility for evaluation. His family says this stay at the facility was coordinated with FBI officials. Agents reportedly continued to meet with Khan regularly after he returned home and continued to do so up until the time of his arrest.

A community activist told The Intercept that after Khan's initial contact with the FBI, he began regularly meeting with the teenager in an attempt to mentor him. He said that during these meetings, Khan had exhibited obvious signs of mental illness. "He was unable to even tie his shoelaces and his mother would have to do it for him. He would say things supporting extremism and terrorist groups but then would later start crying and apologizing," the activist said. The activist did not want to be named for fear of retribution from law enforcement.
