Pontifical saliva goes a long way: Congressman steals Pope's water glass, shares its contents with family and staff

Congressman Bob Brady shares some papal spit with his wife, Debra.
A congressman stole the water glass Pope Francis was drinking out of during his address at the White House on Thursday.

Representative Bob Brady, a devout Catholic and Democrat from Pennsylvania immediately made his way to the podium after Pope Francis finished speaking and grabbed the glass that was still filled with water.

He then drank the water, gave some of the water to his wife Debra, and saved the rest for his grandchildren.

Representative Brady took photos as well, and had his staff send them out to the press.

Comment: We can only pray that the congressman won't get the chance to follow His Holiness to the toilet.

Former detective who pointed out the flaws in lie detector tests sentenced to two years in prison

Douglas G. Williams
Douglas G. Williams
69-year-old Douglas G. Williams of Norman, Oklahoma was sentenced to two years in prison this week for running a website that pointed out the flaws in lie detector tests. Williams is a former detective for the Oklahoma City Police Department and throughout the course of his career he administered thousands of polygraph tests for his own police department, as well as other agencies like the FBI and the Secret Service. Through his experience, Williams learned that a polygraph is not a valid way of truly figuring out whether or not someone is lying. In 1979, he invented "the sting technique," which polygraph experts now refer to as "countermeasures."

He wrote the first manual teaching people how to pass a polygraph test, which was initially published in 1979 and, according to him, was one of the very first e-books available on the Internet.

Comment: Polygraph tests are notoriously inaccurate:
A polygraph not a lie detector; it never was. A polygraph detects physiological expressions associated with lying in some people, such as a racing heart and sweaty fingers. The determination of truth vs. falsehood is a subjective interpretation by the polygraph examiner.

Not surprisingly, the examiner is often wrong. The anxiety associated with "oh no, they will detect that I'm lying" is rather similar to "oh no, they're going to think I'm lying when I'm not."

Increasing number of college students are going hungry or dropping out due to lack of funds

Studies have long shown that a college student's odds of achieving financial security and a better quality of life improve when he or she earns a degree.

But what are some of the obstacles that prevent degree attainment?

At the Wisconsin HOPE Lab, we study the challenges that students from low- and moderate-income households face in attaining a college degree. Chief among these are the many hurdles created by the high price of college. Paying the price of attending college, we find, changes who attends and for how long, as well as the college experience itself - what classes students take, the grades they earn, the activities in which they engage and even with whom they interact.

Our recent research shows an alarming trend on college campuses: an increasing number of students tell us that they are struggling in college, sometimes even dropping out, because they can't afford enough of life's basic necessity - food.

Comment: Students aren't alone in experiencing hunger, increasing poverty is now causing an epidemic of food insecurity. Don't expect the government to make any changes to address the problems as our psychopathic leaders are more interested in global domination, thus creating more poverty, hunger and devastation across the globe.

Truck carrying uranium ore catches fire near Illinois nuclear plant

uranium ore
You probably didn't hear about this one in the national news, but with everything else going on these days, it might be something to pay attention to, especially since it's reportedly been happening a lot lately.

Last Sunday, a semi carrying uranium ore caught fire near the Honeywell Plant in Metropolis, Illinois. The fire began in the engine of the truck cab and was subsequently put out by the fire department. Officials stated that the truck was not at the facility itself and there was no immediate danger. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been notified.

Comment: While other recent accidents at this plant have not been reported in news outlets, there was a uranium hexafluoride gas leak at the plant last October. Are such accidents being deliberately kept out of the media?

Living on almost nothing in America: 1.5 Million families live on $2 a Day

For their new book, H. Luke Shaefer and Kathryn J. Edin followed the lives of America's poorest families to find out what they need to break out of poverty, and how to make it happen.

If she did not make plasma deposits twice a week at a donation center in Tennessee, Jessica Compton and her family would have no income. If not for a carton of spoiled milk, Modonna and Brianna Harris' refrigerator would be barren. The Harris and Compton families' stories are just two accounts of devastating poverty documented in sociology professors Kathryn J. Edin and H. Luke Shaefer's book, $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America.

Comment: Poverty is neither a lack of self-control nor a character defect

New report shows glyphosate resistance in weeds is endangering farming crops

As we have covered extensively in recent months, Monsanto's herbicide glyphosate, the primary ingredient in their top-selling product Roundup has been proven to cause cancer. Now, according to new reports, the chemical doesn't even work and is creating a new resistance in weeds that make them more resilient and more difficult to get rid of.

Nebraska farmer Mike Pietzyk recently discussed how the weeds are becoming resistant to Roundup in a recent interview with Chemicals And Engineers News.

"The days of going out and spraying RoundUp twice a year—those are long gone," he said, adding that he was forced to use a cocktail of different chemicals, some of which are even more dangerous than Roundup. Pietzyk and other farmers are now seeking new solutions to avoid the harsh pesticides used in conventional farming.

"People in urban areas and towns need to understand—we live here, we drink the water under the ground out here," he says. "We want to be good stewards of what we've been entrusted with," he said.

Comment: Herbicide resistant weeds have been spreading for some time, yet because Monsanto has strong ties to government, things have now reached a crisis point.

Homeless veteran versus homeless teen: Shocking video shows New York man throwing food on vet

Image

A homeless veteran begs for change on a New York street. Passers-by ignore him, giving their money to a teen begging nearby. One man dumps his takeout on the unfortunate veteran, showing what he thinks of his service. You won't believe what happened next...

The veteran asks the teen to "watch his stuff" as he cleans up at a nearby shop. A few minutes later he returns, bringing a slice of pizza for the boy. Little did he know that the "homeless teen" was actually part of a social experiment, set up by two brothers from Brooklyn.

Mohammed "Moe" and Etayyim "ET" Etayyim became YouTube celebrities for filming a series of prank videos starting in early 2014. They have also made seven "social experiment" videos highlighting child abuse, bigotry and the treatment of the homeless.

In this video, posted September 23, Moe and ET dress up their younger brother Omar as a homeless teen and sit him right next to a genuine homeless veteran, trying to scrounge up money for food. A six-minute video shows people persistently ignoring the older man, and giving money to Omar instead.

At one point, a man in a striped polo shirt and a fedora rebuffs the veteran, sneering at his plea that he "served his country."

Comment: This video should shame society and the local New York government for allowing these atrocious homeless conditions to develop exponentially. Other governments are not so callous. New York could take a lesson from other states:

German nurse shocked after being forced out of flat to make way for refugees she helps

Image
© Kai Pfaffenbach / Reuters A volunteer points at a blackboard as migrants participate in a spontaneously organized English and German lesson at an improvised temporary shelter in a sports hall in Hanau, Germany, September 24, 2015.
Having lived in the same flat for 16 years, a German woman is being forced to move out to make way for refugees, because building a new shelter is too expensive. The 51 year-old nurse, who has helped asylum seekers in the past, was shocked by the news.

Bettina Halbey, who lives alone in the small town of Nieheim, received a letter from her landlord and the local municipality at the start of September, Die Welt newspaper reported on Thursday.

"I was completely shocked and I can't even begin to find the words to describe how the city has treated me," Halbey told the German publication. "I have had to go through a lot of difficulties recently, and then I get this notice. It was like a kick in the teeth."

Comment: How can the mayor justify this decision when Germany has allocated over $2 billion for refugee housing? Maybe he just wants to keep the money allotted to his town rather than spend it properly.
