Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called on law enforcement to find those responsible for a suspected arson attack on the home of a prominent anti-corruption activist that has caused deep concern among Western countries.

Vitaliy Shabunin, who serves as the head of the Anti-Corruption Action Center's executive board, showed reporters on July 23 the remains of his home in the capital, Kyiv, which burned down overnight.

"The culprits must be found and punished," Zelenskiy said in a statement, adding that such attacks "cast a shadow on the reputation of our state, on our institutions of power, and especially on our law enforcement agencies."

Lockdowns have not had a big impact on coronavirus death rates around the world, scientists have claimed.

Dozens of countries have been forced to tell people to stay home and close shops in a bid to stop the Covid-19 pandemic since it broke out in January.

But now a study has claimed the drastic measures don't even work. They found whether a country was locked down or not was 'not associated' with death rate.

Instead the health of each nation before the pandemic largely played a role, including obesity rates and age.

It could explain why countries such as Britain - with some of Europe's worst obesity rates - have had such a high death toll.

The early closure of international borders seemed to lower cases, but did not translate to real lives saved.

The study compared mortality rates and cases in 50 different countries worst hit by the pandemic up until May 1.

People in Melbourne will be required to wear a face mask in public from today.
Victoria Police are now issuing $200 on-the-spot fines to anyone not wearing face masks in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, after new rules for anyone leaving their home became mandatory at midnight.Officers will enforce the new rule as part of their daily patrols but will exercise discretion over the next seven days, they said.

"We understand that for many people this is a significant adjustment," Commissioner Shane Patton said.

The vast majority of Victorians are trying to do the right thing and our exercise of discretion will reflect that.

"That said, we do expect people to follow the Chief Health Officer's directions and will not hesitate to issue fines to people who are obviously and blatantly showing a disregard for community safety by failing to wear a mask."Victoria recorded 484 new infections yesterday, the highest number for the state since the pandemic began.

Ice Cube called on Hollywood studios to implement a form of reparations to help make up for years of mistreatment of Black artists in the entertainment industry.

The rapper and actor has taken a step outside his usual creative endeavors to help pen a document that he named "A Contract with Black America" that seeks to address police brutality in the United States and aims to dismantle larger pockets of systemic racism. Cube said the document in its current form is unfinished and he's looking to gather more experts and thinkers to help perfect it. Once he's done so, he plans to present it to both Democratic and Republican leaders.

Speaking on "The Breakfast Club," the artist touched on several aspects that the contract addresses. Late in the interview, host Angela Yee asked him about representation in Hollywood. He said he believes Hollywood has mistreated the Black community for years and studios eager to make up for that should give money to establish Black-run studios so that they can tell their stories unencumbered by the typical Hollywood system.

Ten men, mostly Syrian refugees, have been found guilty over the gang rape of a woman outside a German nightclub.

The 2018 attack in the city of Freiburg fuelled anti-foreigner sentiment, with protests by the far right.

The lead defendant was sentenced to five and a half years for the attack - which lasted for more than two hours - while seven others received sentences of up to four years.

Two men received suspended sentences for failing to provide assistance.

Comment: The ideology of 'all police are racist' is so strong that those who hold it try to prevent the arrest of a clearly dangerous individual. These people have what's coming to them.

Palestinians from a Bethlehem-area town are accusing Israeli forces of illegally seizing an ancient artifact from their town in the predawn hours of Monday morning.

The incident took place in the southern occupied West Bank town of Tuqu, which is said to be the birthplace of the biblical prophet Amos, and is home to a number of Byzantine-era archaeological sites.

Video footage, purportedly taken by residents of Tuqu, shows Israeli military forces escorting a large flatbed truck out of the village in the middle of the night.


On the bed of the truck is a massive stone, alleged to be a baptismal font that dates back to the sixth century A.D., that was once part of an ancient church in the village.

While Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) recently celebrated the return of a fifth-century baptismal font, Palestinian officials argue that Israeli forces "stole" the 1,500-year-old relic in an "abominable act of thuggery and cultural appropriation."

Hananya Hizmi, head of COGAT's Antiquities Unit, said on Monday, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.
"I welcome the return of the baptismal font, which is a cultural and historical treasure from the Byzantine period.

" The Civil Administration's heavy investment of effort and resources in the search over recent years for this item has borne fruit. We will continue working tirelessly to preserve the sites and the archaeological relics throughout Judea and Samaria, and to prevent antiquities thieves from looting the history of the region."
Citing a COGAT release, the Jerusalem Post claimed that the baptismal font was looted from the West Bank archaeological site of Tel Tekoa around 20 years ago. COGAT also received assistance from the Bethlehem District Coordination and Liaison Office and Etzion Regional Brigade in recovering the artifact.

However, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Department of Public Diplomacy and Policy offered a different account of the events that transpired late Sunday night and accused "Israeli occupation forces" of stealing the baptismal font from Bethlehem.

Tuqu Mayor Tayseer Abu Mufreh provided more details of the alleged theft, which he said did not happen in Bethlehem, but in his neighboring town.

According to the Middle East North Africa Financial Network, Abu Mufreh recounted that Israeli forces stormed his home, detained members of his family and stole the font. The mayor clarified that the relic was being stored near his home while it awaited transfer to a museum.

PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi slammed the alleged theft as "an abominable act of thuggery and cultural appropriation."
"A hallmark of Israel's system of colonial occupation and oppression has been its disdainful attempts to erase Palestinian presence, culture and heritage, including the illegal appropriation and theft of heritage sites and artifacts," she said in a statement, as reported by the CDJ.
The PLO official also called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and its Director-General Audrey Azoulay "to speak out and protect Palestinian heritage."

Donald Trump announced Wednesday he would send a "surge" of federal law enforcement officers to Chicago to put an end to violence there despite opposition and sharp criticism from the city's mayor, Lori Lightfoot.

Lightfoot spoke with the President Wednesday night amid accusations from Democrat lawmakers that Trump was utilizing federal police deployments as a campaign tactic.

"The conversation was brief and straightforward," a statement from Lightfoot's office read. "Mayor Lightfoot maintains that all resources will be investigatory in nature and be coordinated through the U.S. Attorney's office. The Mayor has made clear that if there is any deviation from what has been announced, we will pursue all available legal options to protect Chicagoans."

Italy has been shocked by a massive scandal in the wake of the arrest of seven Carabinieri officers suspected of being involved in a series of crimes ranging from drug trafficking to unlawful arrests and torture.

In an unprecedented move, prosecutors in the northern Italian city of Piacenza closed down and sequestered the local Carabinieri barracks as part of an investigation against officers operating from it. Six local officers were taken into custody and one put under house arrest.

"Nothing that was going on in those barracks was legal," Piacenza Chief Prosecutor Grazia Pradella told journalists. Only one officer working there was not involved in what Pradella described as "shocking crimes."
