Grocery prices have skyrocketed during the coronavirus pandemic. That has Americans spending more at the supermarket than they have in years.

Prices are spiking — and not just because people are buying more groceries as they spend more time at home.The pandemic has had a strong impact on grocery prices this year, according to seasonally adjusted data released Friday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The BEA tracks personal consumption expenditures to help measure inflation. From February to June, meat and poultry prices rose nearly 11%, with beef and veal prices seeing the highest rise, spiking 20%. For pork the increase was about 8.5%. People are paying more for other staples, too: During the same time period, egg prices shot up 10%, and shoppers shelled out 4% more for cereals and fresh vegetables.

Three teens were arrested for allegedly trespassing onto the Mar-a-Lago Club owned by President Donald Trump, and they were carrying an AK-47 according to police.

The startling incident occurred on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida.

Palm Beach Police spokesman Michael Ogrodnick said that the teens were seen by police in a parked silver Hyundai around midnight on Friday.

When a police officer approached the car, they quickly drove away and the officer gave chase, reported WPTV.

'The Matrix' co-director Lilly Wachowski is claiming the classic science fiction fantasy was always intended to be an allegory for transgender struggles, making her the latest artist to give into woke revisionism.

1999's 'The Matrix' is perhaps one of the most written-about films in history. Its story of reality being an artificial design by dominating machines and characters being chosen to 'wake up' from the false world into the real one, where humans battle machines, lends itself to endless theories.

Wachowski put all that theorizing to bed this week, however, by claiming the film was always intended to be an allegory for the experience of a transgender person.

"I'm glad that it's gotten out that that was the original intention," she said, in an Netflix interview promoting the documentary 'Disclosure.' "The world wasn't quite ready, at a corporate level...the corporate world wasn't ready for it [at the time]."

Comment: Here's an interpretation the Wachowskis don't talk about: The Matrix is at its core a Jewish messianic tale. Freeing 'our people' from slavery and taking them to refuge in 'Zion', thanks to 'the One' who is prophesied to return and defeat the slavemasters/system, after which 'we, the chosen ones', will rule instead.

Large fire breaks out in Abu Dhabi residential building

A large fire broke out in a residential building in Abu Dhabi on Friday night.

Residents of Al Nahyan area reported hearing a loud bang at around 8.30pm followed by numerous sirens as fire trucks from Civil Defence rushed to the scene.

The fire quickly spread along a 12-storey residential building on Al Marwu Steet, near Mediclinic Al Mamora, as police cordoned off the area and turned residents away.

Comment: This is just the latest fire to be reported following the explosion in Beirut, and, while all of them may not be related, as fires in residential buildings in the Emirates are not unheard of, the sheer number of as yet unexplained fires lately is notable:

Huge blasts in a seized Iranian arms cache at a Greek Cypriot naval base in southern Cyprus killed at least 12 people on Monday, triggering power and water outages at the height of the summer.

In what Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides called a "tragedy of Biblical dimensions" for the small Mediterranean island, the explosions devastated the adjacent Vassiliko power station.

The plant accounts for almost 60 percent of supply.

The blasts also caused massive damage to homes in the nearby village of Mari, forcing the evacuation of its population of 150 people, its mukhtar or headman, Nikos Asprou, told AFP.

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said 62 people were injured, two of them seriously, announcing three days of official mourning with flags on state buildings to be flown at half-mast.

Comment: Here an Iranian weapons cache went sky-high.

In Beirut on August 4th 2020, it was a Hezbollah weapons cache - according to some Israeli media reports. Their fall-back story is that Hezbollah was using the seized ammonium nitrate to make munitions with.

A majority of Americans believe the media is vital for democracy, but see an increasing level of bias in news coverage, a new report from Gallup and the Knight Foundation found.

About 84% of Americans said the news media is "critical" or "very important" to democracy, according to the report. However, 49% of those surveyed see "a great deal" of political bias in news coverage.

"Most Americans have lost confidence in the media to deliver the news objectively," said Sam Gill, Knight's senior vice president and chief program officer. "This is corrosive for our democracy."

Gallup and Knight polled more than 20,000 U.S. adults in their latest report, "American Views 2020: Trust, Media and Democracy." It builds on a previous report conducted by Gallup and the Knight Foundation in 2018.

Political affiliations played a key role in determining people's views on the press. While 22% of Democrats and 51% of independents have a "somewhat" or "very" unfavorable opinion of the news media, roughly three-fourths of Republicans felt the same way, according to the report.

Political affiliation's role is reflected throughout the report, particularly in determining whether political attacks on the press are warranted. While 80% of Americans believe the press is being politically undermined, 70% of Democrats believe the attacks are not merited; adversely, 61% of Republicans believe the attacks are justifiable.

Michigan and Nevada both declared that "racism" was a "public health crisis" on Wednesday, joining Wisconsin, with Colorado set to soon become the fourth state to do so.

Michigan Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer created a Black Leadership Advisory Council to "elevate Black voices" and reportedly push state employees to undergo implicit bias training.

"Today, I also signed an executive directive declaring racism as a public health crisis in Michigan," Whitmer said on Wednesday, later adding, "We have a lot of work to do to eradicate the systemic racism that black Americans have faced for generations, and it's going to take time. But the most important thing we can do during this time is work closely with leaders across the state, in every community, to find the root cause of problems and work to eradicate them."

Comment: What if Whitmer's ridiculous statements and the thinking that they're informed by are "the root cause"?

In Nevada, Democrat Governor Steve Sisolak signed a proclamation on Wednesday that also declared that racism was a public health crisis.

Comment: Sounds like a coordinated effort...

Food prices at supermarkets surged during the pandemic as tens of millions of Americans lost their jobs.

According to the latest seasonally adjusted data by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the virus pandemic has had a tremendous impact on food prices from February to June:

Meat and poultry prices jumped 11%, with beef prices surging 20%. Pork climbed by 8.5%, egg prices increased by 10%, and cereals and fresh vegetables were up more than 4%.

"The pandemic has caused a surge in demand for groceries as millions of Americans stay home and avoid eating out. While there's no significant shortage of food, disruptions in the supply chain have created scarcities and driven up prices," CNN Business noted.

Rapid food inflation comes at the worst possible time for the working poor, who were already struggling well before the virus-induced recession, with insurmountable debts, stuck in a renting society, and had very little savings to weather an economic downturn.

Comment: Unemployment, inflation and then hyperinflation, weakening supply chains and climate change - are all contributing to the great difficulty many in the US (and elsewhere) will have in procuring food for themselves and their families. Sadly, we ain't seen nothing yet:

Some 500 military personnel will be deployed to Australia's second most populous state, Victoria, to enforce coronavirus isolation orders.

Anyone caught breaking the rules will face a tough fine as high as A$20,000 (£10,900), with the only exception being for urgent medical care.

Earlier this week, Victoria imposed a night-time curfew, tightened restrictions on people's movements during the day and ordered large parts of the economy to close in order to slow the spread of the virus.

However, nearly a third of those who contracted Covid-19 were not isolating at home when checked on by officials, Victoria state's premier, Daniel Andrews, said on Tuesday.

"There is literally no reason for you to leave your home and if you were to leave your home and not be found there, you will have a very difficult time convincing Victoria police that you have a lawful reason," Mr Andrews told reporters in Melbourne.

Comment: Good God - the leadership in Victoria have gone full-blown Nazi, haven't they?! Even worse than New York City with its new checkpoints.

After a colossal port explosion rocked the capital city of Beirut, the Lebanese government has decided to put all officials who oversaw storage and security there since 2014 under house arrest, until investigations are complete.

The country's Information Minister Manal Abdelsamad said the military will oversee their confinement, until all those responsible among the suspects are found. The port officials will be put under arrest "as soon as possible," according to Abdelsamad, and the whole procedure is expected to be finished "within the next five days." It is unclear as yet how many people are going to be arrested.

The investigation is being conducted by a special committee headed by the justice minister and includes Prime Minister Hassan Diab and the heads of major security agencies.

Comment: Israel continues denying responsibility for the Beirut blast says its media:

Israel has nothing to do with the massive explosion that rocked Beirut on 4 August, the country's parliamentary TV channel has announced. A similar statement was made by an anonymous Israeli official in an interview with Reuters, while the country's Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi alleged that the blast was likely an accident caused by a fire.

At the same time, a representative for the Israel Defence Forces has declined to comment on the cause of the explosion, specifically on allegations that Israel could be behind it.
"We do not comment on foreign media reports", the IDF spokesperson said.
