World's third largest aquifer threatened as fracking expands in Latin America

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking - a method whereby hydrocarbons trapped within rocks are extracted - is expanding rapidly in Latin America. Fracking emits benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene, which are considered by the World Health Organization to be carcinogenic and responsible for blood disorders and other immunological effects. Despite these adverse health effects, however, reserves have already been mapped out in Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

In Mexico, recently passed energy reform legislation promotes fracking as a means of extracting shale gas - and with the reform, the government has opened the oil industry up to the private sector. More than 1,000 wells using the technique are currently in operation in at least 11 of Mexico's 32 states. These fracking efforts are largely being carried out by North American companies such as Halliburton, Schlumberger and Baker Hughes, among others.

"I didn't know anything about oil, but after our water started to get contaminated, we found out that more than 240 wells in our region were using that thing they call fracking," Mariana Rodríguez, from the community of Papantla, Veracruz, told Truthout. "Now all our water sources have become contaminated."

Comment: There is a vast quantity of evidence demonstrating that fracking destroys the environment and human health, but so far the power of the oil and gas industry with its ties to governments has been able to override any opposition. They have been assisted due to the fact that many people have been denied accurate knowledge of the impacts of fracking on their communities, but this appears to be changing as more people become aware of the real costs involved.

After killing his neighbor, an inebriated Pike County sheriff's deputy was arrested and charged with felony manslaughter for accidentally shooting him in the head. Although the deputy initially reported the shooting, he neglected to inform the dispatcher that he had pulled the trigger.

Around 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, Pike County Deputy Joel Jenkins called the sheriff's office to report a shooting. Jenkins told dispatchers, "There's been an accidental discharge at my house. My neighbor, he's down. You guys are going to have to get here ASAP."

According to Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader, Jenkins was off-duty and handling a firearm that "was not his duty gun" when he shot his neighbor, 40-year-old Jason Brady, in the head. Police pronounced Brady dead at the scene. They also discovered Jenkins was drunk when he killed his neighbor.

Comment: Deputy Jenkins is a danger to society and should be locked up for a very, very long time.

Buying gifts on credit? You may want to rethink that strategy

santa's credit card
Once again, we have arrived at that time of the year when retailers hope to make up for a slump in sales of previous months via enthusiastic shoppers, those who throw caution to the wind purchasing more than usual on credit to keep up with holiday-season expectations. Tradition demands it. While you may receive lovely gifts from your friends and family, have you ever considered that your gifts were probably paid for with a credit card that put the giver deeper in debt?

I didn't think so. You'd likely respond by saying, "I have no idea how my friends and family pay for things. That's their business, not mine."

True, but if you think of your own situation, or know as I do from my work with clients, too many people nowadays need credit just to make ends meet every month. See what I mean? How is it possible for holiday gifts paid for by credit to be an expression of caring one to another when real-time hard evidence all around us reveals the ways a downward-debt spiral destroys mental, physical and emotional health, and family wellness? I just don't get it.

Obama wants to ban anyone on the notoriously inaccurate no-fly list from purchasing a gun

obama no fly list
Last night, Obama delivered an address on quote "keeping the nation safe".

In it, he spoke of mass shootings, San Bernardino, and terrorism. He asked for Congress to officially declare war in Syria so we can send more of our troops to potentially die in a foreign nation's civil war.

He also called on Congress to ban anyone who ends up on the No-Fly list from being able to purchase a gun.
"To begin with, Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semi-automatic weapon? This is a matter of national security." (speech transcript)

Comment: The no-fly list is inaccurate, racist and most of all, unconstitutional. This makes it a perfect police state tool to deny citizens of their right to bear arms.

US Army announces that women will soon be forced to register for the draft

US Army Secretary John McHugh announced this week that American women will be soon forced to register for the draft upon their 18th birthday just as men are. Army officials said that the move was in the spirit of "true and pure equality," but with the country wrapped up in dozens of unpopular wars it seems more like equal oppression than equal opportunity.

Currently, US citizens are not forcefully conscripted into military service, but not long ago the draft was a very real thing, and like the flip of a switch it can be imposed at any time that the government fails to recruit enough people for their wars.

A recent ruling to open more combat roles to women inadvertently opened them up for selection for the draft.

McHugh said that universal draft registration will be a normal part of American culture before we know it.

"If we find ourselves as a military writ large where men and women have equal opportunity, as I believe we should," he said.

Not only are the wars currently taking place around the world totally inhumane and illegitimate, but the very concept of conscription is nothing more than slavery, forcing someone to do something against their will. Not only that but a mandatory draft would put people into a dangerous situation and force them to kill against their will, which is wrong for both men and women.

Japanese authorities make another grim "ghost ship" discovery

Four bodies have been found inside a capsized boat discovered floating off the north coast of Japan's main Honshu island -- the latest of the so-called "ghost ships" washing up in Japanese waters in recent weeks.

The vessel -- a 12.5-meter long wooden boat -- was found on Sunday 10km (6.2 miles) south of the Ushitaki fishing port in Sai Village, Aomori prefecture, a spokesman for the Aomori Coast Guard told CNN Monday.

Though there was nothing to definitively identify the boat, it looks very similar to boats found in October in the same region, which featured Korean Hangul lettering and markings on their hull, he said, adding that they may have come from North Korea.

The condition of the latest boat indicated it may have been drifting for some time, he said.

A passenger on a Lufthansa flight on its way from Frankfurt to Belgrade on Sunday was detained after he threatened to open the plane door and bring down the aircraft.

Banging on a cockpit door, the man reportedly threated to down the Lufthansa plane as it was flying over Austria. Though he wouldn't actually have been able to open the doors, he was restrained by the crew and some passengers, Lufthansa said.

"A passenger got up and tried to do something at the door, but was stopped by crew members and other passengers," said Lufthansa spokesman Andreas Bartels.

Barclays to cut investment jobs in Asia to boost profits

Barclays Plc plans to cut more jobs in its investment banking unit, a source familiar with the matter said, as the British bank steps up efforts to slash costs and boost profit.

Most of these job cuts will be in Asia, the source said on Friday.

Bloomberg reported earlier in the day that Barclays would cut 20 percent more investment banking jobs, citing people with knowledge on the matter.

Last month, the bank had put a freeze on hiring until the start of next year.

Barclays is midway through a three-year cost-reduction plan, which involves shedding 19,000 jobs, or about 14 percent of its global workforce.

The latest round of layoffs will be in addition to the 7,000 jobs that the bank plans to cut by 2016.

Germany's Deutsche Bank announced in October that it would cut 15,000 jobs, exit 10 countries and reduce costs to lower than 22 billion euros ($23.88 billion) by 2018 after splitting its investment bank.

The same month, Switzerland's Credit Suisse announced a big restructuring plan under new CEO Tidjane Thiam.

Exxon seeks to be the first to explore for shale oil using fracking in Colombia

Exxon Mobil Corp. has filed for an environmental permit to explore for shale oil and natural gas in Colombia using hydraulic fracturing technology, in a bid to become the first driller to use the controversial technique in the Andean nation.

The company submitted an environmental impact assessment for fracking in the VMM-37 block to Colombia's environmental agency ANLA, Irving, Texas-based Exxon said in an e-mailed response to questions Thursday. If an agreed work program is completed, Exxon will acquire a 70 percent interest in the unconventional play, with 30 percent for Sintana Energy Inc., according to a 2012 statement.

ANLA had no requests for fracking permits, the agency said in e-mailed response to questions in February. It did not respond to a request for comment last week. Exxon's move comes amid a slump in global oil prices that has dissuaded other companies including state-controlled Ecopetrol SA from seeking permits.

Comment: One wonders what was in Exxon's environmental impact assessment, because the evidence is clear on how dangerous and toxic fracking is to the environment.
