3 veteran officers give their take on how to reduce police violence

police car
Footage of American police officers shooting individuals who are unarmed, or armed only with blades, has sadly become all too common. What adds to the tragedy and anger is the fact that other tried-and-tested approaches are available to deal with many of these situations without loss of life.

The shoot-first instinct that seems so pervasive among many US police is in stark contrast to law enforcement tactics in other countries. British police, for example deal with a large number of edged-weapons attacks but almost never open fire (they don't generally carry guns). Just as there are countless online videos of trigger-happy US police, there are numerous recorded examples of UK cops intervening in violent situations without firing a shot.

In one 2014 incident, for example, Albuquerque police attempting to arrest a mentally ill man for "illegal camping" opened fire on him with assault weapons when he drew a tiny blade at a great distance from the heavily armed officers. Their approach is summed up by the fact that they then handcuffed him as he lay dying on the ground. A good contrast is a 2015 video of officers in Corby, England wresting a knife from an attacker using only pepper spray and batons at close range.

Comment: One tactic not mentioned: Weeding out the pathological types to keep them from joining the force in the first place. However, considering that police are simply tools of the state and enforcing control is their job, this will likely not happen.

United States women's soccer international Megan Rapinoe became the latest sports star to join Colin Kaepernick's anti-racism protest on Sunday, choosing to kneel during the national anthem before Seattle Reign's NWSL game against the Chicago Red Stars.

Kaepernick's protests against perceived racial injustices have caused controversy across the US, with the San Francisco 49ers quarterback widely criticized for his actions.

His latest refusal to stand for the Star-Spangled Banner came last Thursday when the 49ers played the San Diego Chargers. Teammate Eric Reid joined the protest.

Young blacks don't trust Hillary Clinton, worrying democrats

Brittany Packnett, 31, a St. Louis-based activist
© Whitney Curtis/ New York TimesBrittany Packnett, 31, a St. Louis-based activist, said young black voters wanted more than “a candidate who is better than the alternative.”
When a handful of liberal advocacy organizations convened a series of focus groups with young black voters last month, the assessments of Donald J. Trump were predictably unsparing.

But when the participants were asked about Hillary Clinton, their appraisals were just as blunt and nearly as biting.

"What am I supposed to do if I don't like him and I don't trust her?" a millennial black woman in Ohio asked. "Choose between being stabbed and being shot? No way!"

"She was part of the whole problem that started sending blacks to jail," a young black man, also from Ohio, observed about Mrs. Clinton.

"He's a racist, and she is a liar, so really what's the difference in choosing both or choosing neither?" another young black woman from Ohio said.

Comment: It's no longer voting for the lesser evil. People don't want to vote for either candidate - it's that bad.

The Moroccan government, in cooperation with the German authorities, will create as many as 600 solar-powered mosques in the country by March 2019 in a bid to boost public awareness of renewable energy sources, The Guardian reported on Monday.

Energy-saving lighting, photovoltaic electricity generation and solar water heating will be installed in about 100 mosques by the end of 2016 if everything goes according to the government's plan. "We want to raise awareness and mosques are important centers of social life in Morocco. They are a place where people exchange views about all kinds of issues including, hopefully, why renewables and energy efficiency might be a good idea," the Guardian quotes the project's chief Jan-Christophe Kuntze as saying.

Morocco's Ministry of Islamic Affairs, in coordination with the German government, have pledged to cover up to 70 percent of the investment costs.

A woman breaks into a home in Brownstown Township and attacks a disabled man.

Police say she tortured him to get the pin number for his debit card - and now she's facing life in prison.

Investigators say 34-year-old Nicole Lytton, went to great lengths to get the ATM code from her victim - including beating, strangling and using a weapon to get what she was after.

That victim was a 63-year-old man who is disabled from a stroke who lives in the Tanglewood mobile home community - which by most accounts is a quiet peaceful place to live.

New Zealand looks to be drifting closer to becoming a republic, as a new poll reveals a majority of Kiwis want to ditch the Queen as their head of state in favour of a New Zealander.

The poll by campaign group NZ Republic shows about a third, or 34 percent of Kiwis, want to carry on with a British head of state. A substantial majority of 59 percent want to sever the country's centuries-old ties with Britain.

Forty-four percent want a directly elected New Zealand head of state and 15 percent want a leader elected by MPs.
Undecided voters remained unchanged on 7 percent over the last three polls.

Just over two years ago, 44 percent of New Zealanders asked the same question wanted a change from the Queen.

The ancient pyramids have remained untouched for thousands of years, but a provincial governor in Egypt has demanded that a newer statue undergo changes before being unveiled, following claims that it represents sexual harassment.

The 'Mother of the Martyr' statue in Sohag, Egypt, shows a peasant woman - a traditional artistic representation of Egypt - with her arms outstretched. A soldier is standing behind her, looking over her shoulder with his arms wrapped around her body.

Although the concrete sculpture has yet to be formally unveiled, residents of Sohag - known for their conservative views - have already complained about what the statue, which sits in a public square, seems to represent.

Dawn was just breaking on January 31, 2012 when the murders were executed with military precision.

Opening the unlocked back door of a house in north-eastern Tennessee, the killers crept into the home of Billy Payne and his fiancée Billie-Jean Hayworth and gunned them down, before slipping away unseen.

A few hours later, a horrified neighbour found the body of Billy, a 36-year-old factory worker, lifeless on his bed, a bullet wound to his face and his throat slashed.

In the nursery next door lay Billie-Jean, 23, shot in the head while cradling their seven-month-old son Tyler.
