Two people have been injured and a man arrested following a reported knife fight between kitchen staff at Sony's London HQ. Armed police were present at the scene and nearby buildings were evacuated.

The Mirror reported that the incident was a 'brutal knife fight between kitchen staff.' Eyewitnesses spoke of seeing 'blood everywhere,' after one kitchen worker stabbed another with a large knife during a fight, the paper reported.

A witness told The Independent, who's offices are opposite the scene, that he heard a "commotion" at around 11am coming from the third-floor canteen.

"I saw two guys who appeared to be fighting," he added. "One man was on the floor on his back and the other one was standing over him.

"I thought he was raining punches down but I realised a few moments later that he was holding a large kitchen knife."

The Gulag Archipelago: A new foreword by Jordan B. Peterson

Jordan Peterson

Editor's note: The following essay is Jordan B. Peterson's new foreword to the new edition of The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (Penguin, November 2018, 544 pages). Reproduced with the kind permission of the author.

From the speech delivered by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to the Swedish Academy on the occasion of his acceptance of the Nobel Prize for Literature:
Once we have taken up the word, it is thereafter impossible to turn away: A writer is no detached judge of his countrymen and contemporaries; he is an accomplice to all the evil committed in his country or by his people. And if the tanks of his fatherland have bloodied the pavement of a foreign capital, then rust-colored stains have forever bespattered the writer's face. And if on some fateful night a trusting Friend is strangled in his sleep-then the palms of the writer bear the bruises from that rope. And if his youthful fellow citizens nonchalantly proclaim the advantages of debauchery over humble toil, if they abandon themselves to drugs, or seize hostages-then this stench too is mingled with the breath of the writer. Have we the insolence to declare that we do not answer for the evils of today's world?...

The simple act of an ordinary brave man is not to participate in lies, not to support false actions! His rule: Let that come into the world, let it even reign supreme-only not through me. But it is within the power of writers and artists to do much more: to defeat the lie! For in the struggle with lies art has always triumphed and shall always triumph! Visibly, irrefutably for all! Lies can prevail against much in this world, but never against art...

One word of truth shall outweigh the whole world.

'Full-blown fascism': NPCs go nuts after Trump tweets 'racist' immigration ad

US President Donald Trump has sparked outrage after tweeting an official Republican Party ad which condemns Democrats' immigration policies as a threat to the country. Critics slammed the video as racist.

The ad includes footage of Luis Bracamontes, a Mexican man who entered the US illegally and killed two police officers in Sacramento in 2014, despite having been deported twice before. The video shows Bracamontes laughing about his crime and promising to "kill more cops soon."

The ad then turns to footage of the caravan of Central American migrants making their way towards the US border. Trump has vowed they will not be allowed to enter the US under any circumstances. "Who else would the Democrats allow in?" the ad asks, before promising that Trump and the Republicans are "making America safe again."

Central America migrants in Juchitan, Mexico, will have to continue on foot towards the United States after failing to acquire buses.
Thousands of Central American migrants resumed their slow trek through southern Mexico on Thursday, as the two caravans currently in the country faced pressure from immigration agents and police.

Mexican authorities haven't directly targeted the main caravan of about 4,000 migrants, and activists aiding that group said they were shifting their route toward the Gulf coast, a path closer to the Texas border.

But a second, smaller caravan about 320 km behind the first group appeared to be more leaderless, get less press attention and be more vulnerable.

German media reveals details about Freiburg gang rape suspect

The main suspect in the gang rape of an 18-year-old German in Freiburg was described as posing an "imminent danger" and should have been arrested as soon as possible, local media claims, citing an arrest warrant.

A Syrian man, identified as a 21-year-old Majd H., is the prime suspect behind the gang rape of an 18-year-old woman in the western German city of Freiburg. He was not only previously known to police but had an arrest warrant issued against him on October 10, law enforcement said recently.

According to the latest revelations by German daily Bild, the details of the warrant are even more chilling. There was "an imminent danger" that he would commit other serious crimes, the media outlet writes, citing the document. The dangers included sexual coercion and grave bodily harm.

The warrant recommended arresting him immediately for the sake of public safety. However, it wasn't processed until October 21, a week after the gang rape in Freiburg which provoked widespread public outrage.

Human rights threat or anti-corruption tool? UK's new Unexplained Wealth Orders under fire

A new UK government tool to combat money laundering is under fire. Experts differ on Unexplained Wealth Orders (UWO), some brand them a danger to human rights, while for others they're vital in helping to beat corruption.

The UWOs, introduced in the 'The Criminal Finances Act 2017', are being used by the National Crime Agency (NCA) to target suspected corrupt foreign officials who are believed to have laundered money in the UK.

The NCA believe there are billions of pounds of ill-gotten money invested in the British property market. UWOs are an attempt by investigators to force owners to disclose their wealth. Failing to adequately do so could lead to the NCA applying to the UK High Court to seize the property.

The new measures have lead to fears that the long-standing notion of innocence proceeding guilt is under threat.

UK economic collapse: 200+ shopping centres failing, 100,000 jobs axed in 3 years

Broadmarsh Centre

The Broadmarsh Centre in Nottingham (pictured) has been described as 'empty and soulless'
The crisis facing Britain's High Street could result in more than 200 shopping centres falling into administration, experts say.

The rising popularity of online shopping combined with the downfall of large 'anchor stores' such as BHS and Toys R Us causes a 'downward spiral', according to Nelson Blackley, Senior Research Associate at Nottingham Business School.

'If centres close, particularly in small towns, it will be catastrophic,' Mr Blackley told the BBC.

'We have too many of them, doing exactly the same - the same range of stores and products - and basically that's not attractive,' he added.

Several centres at risk of closure are owned by US private equity firms with deals that would need refinancing.

Mr Blackley, Senior Research Associate at the National Retail Research Knowledge Exchange Centre, said that online retail in the UK was growing faster than almost all other retail markets in the world.

Comment: Online shopping doesn't account for what's happening: The UK economy is in freefall, particularly since the banking collapse, the billions in bailouts, 'austerity', as well as more than a decade of war on the Middle East, soaring unemployment, stagnant wages, the dearth of industry and inflation, mean people are struggling just to survive, all of which those in government are oblivious to: Shameless: UK MPs to get another pay rise taking the total to £11,000 in just 3 years

Hundreds arrested in Paris after violent Halloween riots

A call for a violent Halloween night "purge" sparked a crime spree in the suburbs of Paris. Inspired by the dystopian films in which all crime is legal for one night, hundreds of revelers looted and pillaged the French suburbs.

Police say messages circulating on social media, calling for a "purge" against the authorities, were responsible for the violence, including robberies and assaults on cops. Roving gangs of masked youths attacked one officer with acid and looted several shops, breaking windows and setting trash cans on fire.

Fake outrage wins: Conservative comic trolls Target into changing the race of Black Panther costume models

A conservative blogger says he has managed to force US's second-largest retailer to change the photo for a Black Panther costume so that the model kid didn't look white.

In case you've missed the entire 'Black Panther only for black kids' debate, here it is. When the Marvel superhero movie was released in January, it was both a major commercial success and a cultural event for many people. After all, it featured a predominantly black cast, borrowed heavily from African cultures for its setting and its core conflict was about how to best deal with the toxic legacy of black slavery and racism in the US.

But for some people the flick's popularity posed a very peculiar question - is it appropriate for parents of white children to allow them to wear a Black Panther costume for Halloween. Not a simple question to answer in a country, where questioning the blackface taboo can cost a career. For what it's worth, some of the character's creators said, hell, yes, let the kids have fun.

UsToo! Google staff stage worldwide walkouts over sexual harassment, forced arbitration, mistreatment of female employees

Workers stand outside the Google offices in Dublin, Ireland.
Despite the tech giant framing itself as a champion of the #MeToo movement thousands of Google employees have staged a walkout to protest the company's failure to address sexual harassment and gender inequality issues.

Google employees from offices in Berlin, Dublin, Haifa, London, Singapore, Zurich, and other cities staged walkouts at 11am, starting with the Tokyo office. Other offices around the world will follow suit at 11am local time.

The Walkout for Real Change was reportedly sparked by the New York Times revelation that the company gave Android creator Andy Rubin a $90 million severance in 2014 after he was accused of sexual harassment, despite Google finding the allegations credible. The New York Times article revealed a number of instances where senior executives at the company were paid millions in exit packages after being accused of sexual misconduct, while Google kept silent about their reported behavior.
