Nobel laureate ElBaradei says world must abandon nuclear weapons

Oslo, Norway - Nuclear watchdog agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei warned Saturday in accepting the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize that humanity faces a choice between nuclear weapons and survival.

ElBaradei shared the coveted award with his International Atomic Energy Agency - cited for their drive to control the spread of nuclear weapons, especially to terrorists.

"I have no doubt that if we hope to escape self-destruction, then nuclear weapons should have no place in our collective conscience, and no role in our security," ElBaradei said in his acceptance speech.

Question

American hunger: Are scientists lying?

I gambled $31.50 on the new USDA report ERS-ERR-11, not sure if I would understand. Government reports are often clogged with asphyxiated prose and gravel-gray pages of footnoted tables. But mercifully “Household Food Security in the United States 2004” is a readable booklet. Its main point is clear: hunger in America is rising.

The basics: the Fed has surveyed 60,000 American families. It found 88.1% to be “food secure” –- they don't worry about getting food. But 11.9% are “food insecure” – sometimes they don't know if they can afford food, but by doing without medications or delaying the rent they avoid hunger. That category is 13.5 million households. Finally 3.9%, or 4.4 million American households, sometimes go hungry for lack of money.

Lifestyles may lead to loss of treatment

· Obesity could disqualify patients, says watchdog· Recommendations will not be binding on NHS

Patients who smoke, drink too much or are obese could be denied medical help if their lifestyle is likely to undermine their treatment, the government's health treatment watchdog said yesterday.

A report published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) said: "If the self-inflicted cause of the condition will influence the likely outcome of a particular treatment, then it may be appropriate to take this into account in some circumstances."

Where have all the Heroes Gone?

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate...Returning violence for violence multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

World's First partial face transplant performed in France

Doctors in France say they have performed the world's first partial face transplant, forging into a risky medical frontier with their operation on a woman disfigured by a dog bite.

The 38-year-old woman, who wants to remain anonymous, had a nose, lips and chin grafted onto her face from a brain-dead donor whose family gave consent.

The operation, performed on Sunday, included a surgeon already famous for transplant breakthroughs, Dr Jean-Michel Dubernard.

"The patient's general condition is excellent and the transplant looks normal," said a statement issued on Wednesday from the hospital in the northern city of Amiens where the operation took place.

Cult

Cult-ivating Terror

Excerpted from SOTT Essay: Cult-ivating Terror: A brief analysis of the origins and effects of the cult phenomena in modern society

[...] One religious professor in 1994 well summarized the popular perspectives concerning the identification of "cults" in an online posting, shortly after the tragedy at Waco, that deserves some consideration:

Sheeple

Support the Troops - Because It's Damn Sure George Bush Doesn't

The average age of an graduating American Marine is 19. During their boot camp training, they are effectively brainwashed and taught the finer points of killing without remorse, or "for fun" as many of them have described it. While officially classed as "men", when we factor in the severely retarded state of the American society, and particularly the American education system that spawned them, the recruits are in fact little more than children, albeit trained killer children.

Small wonder then that, when let loose on the streets of Iraq with a gun and a Humvee and told to "go get some bad guys", these gun-toting grunts should end up killing and torturing indiscriminately, and in doing so, stoke the flames of hatred and anger among the Iraqi people.

Of course, we realise that the average American soldier that blows the head of an Iraqi child cannot be held fully accountable for his misdeeds. If it were not for the elitist social policies, dehumanising military policies, Orwellian education policies and the fascist propaganda of US government officials, there would be far fewer impoverished, dumbed- down, aggressive and wholly deceived teenage American boys to sign up to fight the wars for profit of their so-called leaders.

The shocking use of police stun guns

"Tasers are suffering from mission creep," says Nick Lewer, who studies conflict resolution at the University of Bradford in the UK. "From being an alternative to lethal firearms they are now becoming an indiscriminate compliance tool."
