Fleeing the Empire State: New York losing residents to other states due to lack of opportunity, cost of living

New York over the past year continued to lose more residents to other states than it gained - even as the overall population grew slightly thanks to a continued influx of immigrants, Census data shows.

During the 12-month period ending July 1, the state lost a net 190,508 residents to other states, according to the data. That pushed the net outmigration to over 1 million people since 2010 - the largest of any state, according to a review by the Empire Center, a fiscal watchdog group.

The net loss since 2010 is actually less than the net migration outflow of nearly 1.6 million during the comparable period of 2000-07, the Empire Center's E.J. McMahon said in the review.

"The stories continue to be a lack of economic opportunity upstate ... and downstate it's just cost," McMahon said. "The city and downstate can't hold people because there's not enough affordable living."

The U.S. Postal Service will no longer deliver mail to the door for new addresses, pushing mail recipients to instead cluster their mailboxes in a centralized area.

The new policy marks a sharp shift as the agency continues to find ways to cut costs and follows through on a proposal for which it has long advocated. USPS announced the change in a recent update to its Postal Operations Manual, in which it also made "centralized delivery" its preferred method of dropping off mail. Having letter carriers deliver mail to a cluster of mailboxes rather than to each individual door allows for more efficient routes that can be completed more quickly.

Advocates for the change have said the new policy could save the Postal Service billions of dollars annually as it continues to look for ways to reduce its labor costs. Detractors have argued the shift would unfairly target urban dwellers and reduce the value of mail-based advertising. As of 2013, about one-third of U.S. addresses received to-the-door delivery, most of which were located in large cities. Clustered boxes in neighborhoods force individuals to deal with safety and weather issues, opponents of the change have said.

Almost every day on public radio or public television, I hear reports about how fake news is undermining our democracy. These high-minded reporters and anchors seem truly to believe that a feverish menace is overwhelming the minds of once-sensible people.

This story is itself fake news for several obvious reasons. We've never had more good information than we have now; people are as well-informed as they want to be. There will always be outlets purveying lies; that is the nature of communication. And the insistence on the "fake news" issue is an effort to assign Trump's victory not to those who brought it to us (the electorate, and the incompetence of the Clinton campaign) but on some nefarious agents.

The fact that we have more and better information today than ever almost goes without saying. When I started in the news business more than 40 years ago, few reporters carried tape recorders, largely because they worked for a guild and were never subject to correction. Today there are countless outlets, thanks to the internet, and important events are almost always recorded. The amount of data we have on public figures is vast compared to even ten years ago.

Given the current state of American public schools, it is no wonder that teenagers are turning to the internet and emulating the outrageous "role models" they find online.

As teenagers make headlines for snorting condoms and eating Tide Pods in a quest for fame and recognition online, a troubling set of statistics has been released from the United States Department of Education, which shows that the majority of eighth graders in public schools are not proficient in reading or basic math.

In 2017, only 34 percent of eighth-grade students in American public schools were proficient in mathematics, according to a report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). That number varied by state, with proficiency rates as high as 50 percent in Massachusetts and as low as 17 percent in Louisiana.

The percentage of eighth graders who were proficient in math in 2017 was even lower at public schools in urban districts where rates were shockingly low with 11 percent proficiency in Cleveland, Baltimore, and Fresno, and just 5 percent proficiency in Detroit.

Comment: Between the relatively new, common core curriculum and the other policies and standards mentioned above, you'd think there was a conspiracy to keep America's youngest dumb and incapable.

'Heinous acts': US Olympic committee accused of sex trafficking in new lawsuit

The US Olympic Committee is embroiled in a fresh misconduct controversy as a new lawsuit alleges that it knowingly allowed the sex trafficking and abuse of Taekwondo athletes for more than 20 years.

Four female athletes and 44 women, whose identities have been withheld, are accusing the USOC and USA Taekwondo of allowing more than two decades of sexual abuse, exploitation and trafficking of its athletes.

The class action lawsuit alleges that the USOC knowingly allowed two high profile Taekwondo stars, Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez and his brother Jean, who is a former Team USA coach, to engage in abuse and sex trafficking of athletes. The brothers are also named as defendants in the suit.

The plaintiffs say that the men raped or assaulted them while they were training or when they were travelling to competitions around the world. They also allege that the Lopez brothers were known to take a sexual interest in young athletes.

"Much like a pimp who traffics women for money, the USOC was trafficking its athletes to known sexual abusers for money and medals," attorney Rex Sharp, representing the plaintiffs, said to CNN.

The day before doctors were scheduled to end Trenton’s life support and declare him brain dead, the boy showed signs of brain activity and movement. Eventually, Trenton began breathing without assistance and speaking in full sentences.

A 13-year-old boy in Alabama who suffered a severe brain injury in a vehicle accident miraculously regained consciousness after his parents signed organ donation papers.

Trenton McKinley, of Mobile, suffered seven skull fractures in an accident two months ago when the small utility trailer he rode flipped over and landed on his head.

"I hit the concrete, and the trailer landed on top of my head. After that, I don't remember anything," Trenton told WALA.

Doctors gave his parents little hope that he would ever recover from the accident, telling his mother he "would never be normal" if he did.

"Give the one-finger salute, guys! " One of the protesters cheered. And the protesters did so, responding to the threats of the soldier, who characterized them by shirt color, saying: "You the yellow T-shirt guy! I heard you and saw you when you insulted me, I have no problem shooting you as I did during the past Fridays."

A bodyguard who has protected outspoken moviemaker and gun-control advocate Michael Moore was arrested at Kennedy International Airport for allegedly carrying a pistol without a New York license, authorities said Thursday.

Patrick Burk, 34, faced arraignment on a felony charge of criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors did not have his attorney's name.

Burk was questioned by police Wednesday night after he notified a United Airlines ticket agent that he wanted to carry his weapon - unloaded and in a bag - on a flight to Los Angeles, said Port Authority spokesman Tony Ciavolella.

The bodyguard, who works for the California-based security firm Gavin de Becker & Associates, told police he had traveled to New York with Moore earlier this month, Ciavolella said. He produced licenses for his Mauser handgun from California and Florida, but not New York, which prompted his arrest.
