Trump's comments on Paris attacks spark outrage in France

Trump comments Paris attacks

Trump said: “If one employee or just one patron had a gun – or if one person in this room had been there with a gun, aimed at the opposite direction – the terrorists would have fled or been shot, and it would have been a whole different story.”
The foreign office has condemned comments by US President Donald Trump about the November 2015 Paris terrorism attacks, and requested "respect for the memory of the victims".

The statement from the Quai d'Orsay ministry, entitled a "a reaction to President Trump", read: "France expresses its firm disapproval of President Trump's comments on the attacks of 13 November 2015 in Paris, and calls for respect for the memory of the victims".

The statement continued: "Thanks to the efficiency and professionalism of the special forces and the bravery and heroism of the French police, hundreds of lives were saved. Every country is free to define its own laws when it comes to bearing arms.

"France is proud to be a safe country, where the buying and holding of firearms is strictly regulated. The statistics of firearm victims do not make us question France's choice in the matter."

The statement continued: "Free circulation of arms in society does not constitute a defence against terrorism attacks. It could, on the contrary, make it easier to plan this type of attack."

Comment: French FM expresses 'firm disapproval' over Trump claims that Paris attacks could have been halted by armed citizens

WWII veteran who walked with Putin after being pushed by his guards speaks to RT about his many battles

Russian President Vladimir Putin's bodyguards pushed away a World War II veteran at the Victory Day parade in Moscow, then Putin himself invited him to walk together. The two turned out to be old acquaintances.

Retired major general Dmitry Syrkashev, 94, told RT that he was called up for military service when he was younger than 17. After completing just a six-month training course, the young soldier was sent into battle.

The first major operation Syrkashev took part in was the Battle of Smolensk in 1943 - a strategic offensive operation by the Red Army to liberate the Smolensk and Bryansk regions in western Russia. The Soviets faced fierce resistance from the Nazi troops who had managed to entrench in the region, but after several breakthroughs, several major cities were liberated.

Comment: And even better, Netanyahu was reminded of his proper place in the Russian order.

American rapper Azealia Banks has tweeted out a lengthy list of her grievances with Israeli people after she says she was racially and sexually harassed on a trip to Tel Aviv.

The artist claimed that she was treated rudely on multiple occasions due to her skin color, including being subjected to extra security checks at the airport, facing hostility in restaurants and grocery stores, as well as being "purposefully coughed on" and "stepped on" in public.

Comment: What Ms. Bank's experienced may not necessarily be racism - Israelis are just horrible people all around. But they do reserve a special vehemence for blacks.

Google be gone: A Berlin community is fighting the 'existential threat' of a planned Google campus

Protesters outside the Umspannwerk building in Kreuzberg, Berlin, where Google plans to set up a campus.
Other cities have embraced the company, but in Kreuzberg opposition to a planned Google campus is vociferous. What makes Berlin different?

In the streets next to Görlitzer Park - an oblong patch popular with skaters, dog walkers and the odd drug dealer in the east of Kreuzberg in Berlin - you soon spot signs of contention about the newcomer to the neighbourhood. One is scrawled across a wall: "Fuck off Google."

Plans for the search engine giant's new campus have inspired the community to respond creatively to what they see as an existential threat. The local anarchist bookshop, Kalabal!k, holds "Anti-Google Café" sessions twice a month, and since last year one of the burgeoning activist groups has been distributing a newspaper entitled Shitstorm: Against Google, Displacement and Tech Dominance.

The Google campus's future location is a large former electrical substation or Umspannwerk, which is currently hired out as an event space. Although the opening date was initially announced as September 2017, it has since been pushed back to autumn this year. It will be the company's seventh campus worldwide.

UK Republic party: 'Essentially, the monarchy is corrupt' - should be abolished

The campaign group Republic is committed to bringing down the House of Windsor, despite a wedding that may deepen the public's emotional bond with the royals. Is it right to argue that this soap opera is less popular than people think?

On a scorchingly hot Saturday lunchtime in Leeds, the varied strands of the British left have gathered outside the city's art gallery for their annual May Day parade. They are all here: the Labour party, the Communist party, the Socialist party, a smattering of trade unions, the Alliance for Workers' Liberty and a handful of vegans chalking slogans on the paving stones. Meanwhile, under a green gazebo adorned with the tagline "End the Reign", activists from a radical organisation that resists any left/right stereotyping are setting up their stall and hoping for a decent couple of hours' business.

On a trestle table, they have arranged a handful of laminated blowups of newspaper articles, mostly from the Guardian, about Prince Harry being interviewed by police about the killing of rare birds, the Queen's £82m income and the "black spider letters" - named after Prince Charles's eccentric handwriting - that revealed the future king's efforts to influence some of the policies of the last Labour government. The basic point all this bumf is intended to illustrate is presented in a four-page A5 leaflet. "Monarchy must go," it says, explaining why having a hereditary head of state "goes against every democratic principle", as well as claiming that looking after the royals costs the public purse £334m a year.

British obstetrician 'sliced baby's neck with scissors' during delivery

According to the Herald, a doctor at Ninewells Hospital in the Scottish city of Dundee was suspended by NHS Tayside after she opted for a vaginal delivery, ignoring a wide range of medical complications indicating that a caesarean section would have been safer.

Doctor Vaishnavy Vilvanathan Laxman is said to have sliced a baby's neck with scissors during delivery, resulting in the child's death. A Medical Practitioners Tribunal heard that Laxman had allegedly failed to receive the mother's consent for a vaginal delivery, as well as asked her to push when she was "not in established labor" and "undertook one or more incisions of the cervix without due care."

The infant was reportedly in the breech position, had abnormally low fetal heart rate and a prolapsed umbilical cord, which indicated that the risks of the baby becoming entangled with it were high.

As the baby boy died during childbirth, Laxman purportedly failed to provide the mother with adequate anesthesia prior to going on with surgical incisions to extract the fetus, and, according to the Herald, "failed to acknowledge [the mother's] requests to stop."

Aspiring female Saudi learner drivers priced out of the market with costs 1000 times higher than for males

Saudi women are up in arms over the cost of driving lessons - a financial hurdle that many believe could stop females from taking to the roads for the first time ever when historic legislation passes.

Women were banned from the roads in Saudi Arabia up until September last year, when a royal decree declared that females would legally be allowed to own a driving licence.

In the past, women have reportedly been jailed for breaking the cultural code. In July last year, human rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul was arrested outside King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. Al-Hathloul had previously attempted to drive from the United Arab Emirates into Saudi Arabia.

Comment: For now at least, the new Saudi Arabia seems to be much the same as the old Saudi Arabia; it continues its criminal war on Yemen, its repression of women (and anybody not rich enough to buy influence), and its abject neglect towards foreign workers.

An elderly homeowner in north St. Louis fatally shot an intruder Sunday afternoon. Then hours later, apparent retaliatory drive-by gunfire rang out at the victim's residence.
A 74-year-old homeowner told police he was in his backyard Sunday afternoon when Freddric Smith, 26, forced him inside his north St. Louis residence at gunpoint and demanded property, KMOV-TV reported.

But it turns out the homeowner had a gun, too - and once inside the dwelling, the victim retrieved it and exchanged gunfire with Smith, the station said.

Smith was shot in his side and taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical, unstable condition, KMOV reported. He was later pronounced dead, the station said.

"We are anticipating 1000+ for this monumental event," the company said in a pitch encouraging people to sign up, "This is Sin City after all. We invite you all to c*m... and help us make history!"

Epileptic mother files lawsuit claiming she was raped in jail after being arrested for a half gram of marijuana

A traumatized mother is speaking out after she said she was brutally raped by a jail guard after she was arrested and thrown in jail when she admitted to a police officer that she had less than half a gram of marijuana in her car for medicinal use.

Emma Lopez, a 26-year-old mother of two, was pulled over for speeding a few blocks from her home by a Katy Independent School District police officer on March 1. While she was polite and complied with the officer, he asked her to step out of her car and then said, "The minute I stopped you, I could smell marijuana on your car."

Lopez admitted that she did have less than half a gram of cannabis in her car, and she told the officer that she used it to control her seizures. As The Free Thought Project has reported, thousands of people who suffer from seizures have discovered the incredible power of cannabis as a treatment, and research has found that 90 percent of epileptic patients who tried medical cannabis reported a reduction in seizures.

"I have seizures and I don't even smoke very much," Lopez said.
