Defunding police has turned 'progressive' San Francisco into a haven for shoplifters, thieves and drug addicts

Protesters march with a banner mocking a dollar bill that reads ‘Defund police, Fund black youth’ during a rally to mark Juneteenth in San Francisco, California.
When it comes to defunding the police, you need only look at this city to see how it ends up. Pharmacy chains and other stores are shutting up shop, all because the law enforcement there is so anemic and the criminals so brazen.

I often wonder what people who ask for police defunding are expecting a city with less policing to look like. It seems that we don't have to go far to find the answer. In fact, we can look at current speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's congressional district of San Francisco. Specifically, the rampant crime and shoplifting problems that have caused several pharmacies to close.

Comment: No one could see this coming? The real question is why establishment institutions support such a lunatic idea. What is the larger agenda? It's certainly not what ordinary citizens want.

Texas governor Greg Abbott
Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday signed an executive order prohibiting local governments and public schools from requiring face masks.

The order directs local governments to drop their mask mandates by May 21 and schools to do so by June 4.

"The Lone Star state continues to defeat COVID-19 through the use of widely-available vaccines, antibody therapeutic drugs, and safe practices utilized by Texans in our communities," Abbott said in a press release. "Texans, not government, should decide their best health practices, which is why masks will not be mandated by public school districts or government entities."

Local governments that disobey the order and keep their mask mandates in place after May 21 may be subject to a fine of up to $1,000.

The New York attorney general's office said Tuesday that it is conducting a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump's business empire, expanding what had previously been a civil probe.

"We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the company is no longer purely civil in nature," Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Attorney General Letitia James, said in a statement.

"We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA," Levy said.

James' investigators are working with the Manhattan district attorney's office, which has been conducting a criminal investigation into Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, for two years. James and District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. are both Democrats.

A Michigan judge on Tuesday rejected one of the final challenges to the 2020 presidential election, batting down a case that former President Trump and his allies had touted in their efforts to overturn the race's results.

Michigan Circuit Court Judge Kevin Elsenheimer dismissed a case brought by a voter in in rural Antrim County who said that fraud had taken place in the November contest, ruling that an audit conducted by the Michigan secretary of state's office satisfied a state law that provide's avenues for voters to request such counts.

"By deciding this motion, the court is not saying that there were no problems in the way that Antrim County conducted its November 2020 elections. The clerk has admitted that there were challenges and problems in the elections, although the hand count ultimately of the presidential election showed results largely consistent with the canvass totals that were entered by the state and reported by the county," Elsenheimer said in delivering his ruling.

Far-left Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot granting interviews only to 'black or brown journalists'

lori lightfoot
Far-left Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is granting one-on-one interviews only to "black or brown journalists," a number of local TV news reporters said on social media Tuesday.

What are the details?

Mary Ann Ahern — a political reporter for NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV in Chicago — tweeted that Lightfoot's spokeswoman said the mayor "is granting 1 on 1 interviews — only to Black or Brown journalists."

Ahern also made reference to Lightfoot arriving at the "midway point" in her mayoral term, which Fox News said apparently signals that Ahern tried and failed to land an interview with Lightfoot.

Czech apology over NATO's 1999 Yugoslavia bombing

Milos Zeman
Czech President Milos Zeman apologised on Tuesday for NATO's bombing of former Yugoslavia in 1999, which his country took part in while he was prime minister.

The three-month bombardment was designed to halt Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic's deadly crackdown on separatist ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, a southern province that later declared independence.

The US-led campaign in effect ended a conflict that had begun in 1998 and had killed more than 13,000 people, the final chapter of Yugoslavia's bloody collapse.

What does 'woke' mean to Britons?

woke
YouGov explores how many Britons understand the term, and who and what they consider to be woke.

One of the political words of the moment is "woke". As with so many parts of British political discourse, it is an import from the United States - and as with so many other things in the USA, its origin is in the Black community before being co-opted and eventually distorted by mainstream white people.

Originally the term referred to a need to wake up to, and stay 'woke' to, the realities of Black people's place in America and the system designed to keep them down. With the term becoming more mainstream recently it evolved to mean a more general sense of awareness to social injustice against all groups, although it remains closely associated with the Black Lives Matter movement.

'Vaccine Saves' projected onto Christ the Redeemer statue by advertising agency

Vaccine activists pose in front of Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer Statue
Brazil's world-famous Jesus statue in Rio de Janeiro has been lit up to project a message of vaccine evangelism, encouraging individuals from miles around to drop to their knees and worship another, more controversial savior.

The statue, which depicts Jesus Christ, arms outstretched, on the hillside of Rio, was emblazoned with the slogans "vaccine saves" and "united for vaccines." The display was organized by the Cristo Redactor Sanctuary and the Ogilvy Brazil advertising agency.

Some believers, however, did not appreciate the message, condemning it as blasphemous.

Comment: It's rather telling that they need to employ an advertising agency to remind people of the apparent benefits of vaccines. Meanwhile actual religious leaders are wise to what's really happening, and are being made to suffer the consequences for speaking out:

Church of Sweden announces that it is "Trans"

The Church of Sweden has published an open letter signed by a long list of priests, deacons, and other church staff, proudly announcing that it is "trans."

Whatever that means.

The Church of Sweden represents Europe's largest Lutheran denomination and the letter was published on the Västerås diocese's official website.

"We write to you from a church that is also trans. A church is made up of people. People are different. We have confirmees, employees, churchwardens, elected representatives, non-profits, and other parishioners who define themselves as trans people. The church also consists of trans people. Therefore, the church could be described as trans," the letter said.

The letter then decried the fact that some feminists are trying to protect female spaces from biological men, such as female sports or changing rooms, for which they are often denounced as TERFs (trans exclusionary radical feminists) by LGBT campaigners.
