Hundreds march In Sicily protesting NATO drills - 'Sicily is not a war lab!'

Hundreds of people have taken to the streets of Sicily protesting against Trident Juncture 2015, the largest military maneuvers in more than a decade, which NATO claims are designed to adapt the alliance to "emerging security challenges."

The protesters marched through the streets of the city of Marsala, less than 10 miles (16km) from Vincenzo Florio Airport. The airport is a base for the 37th Wing of the Italian air force and is one of the forward operating bases (FOBs) used by NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control.

Organized by the "No war, no NATO" group, activists from all corners of the Italian island marched with banners reading "Sicily is not laboratory of the war" and "Sicily is no war zone". People urged the Italian government to better invest in education and the medical sector rather than military activity.

Accompanied by police in riot gear, the procession blocked traffic in the city center as protesters proceeded to reach Victory Square. A large portion of the crowd expressed concern with NATO activities disturbing the local tourism industry.

The US-led Trident Juncture 2015 military exercises which began on October 19 involve 36,000 troops from 30 countries. More than 160 aircraft including fighter jets, helicopters, surveillance planes, and drones, operating from 15 air bases in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, the three Allies hosting Trident Juncture are also taken part in the maneuvers. The exercises are the biggest NATO military exercise to take place since 2002.

Comment: It's great to see more people taking a stand and protesting such a destructive force as NATO.

A black American man has applied for refugee status in Canada claiming he risks being killed by police in his home country because of his race.

Kyle Lydell Canty, 30, filed a claim for asylum and told a hearing of Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board that black people in America were "being exterminated at an alarming rate".

To back up his claim Mr Canty used the examples of the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and the death of Eric Garner, who was put in a choke hold by police in New York.

Mr Canty told the hearing in Vancouver: "I'm in fear of my life because I'm black. This is a well-rounded fear."

According to the IRB he submitted a "significant amount of evidence" to back up his claim, including video footage of his own interactions with police in six US states where he had lived.

Comment: Police brutality disproportionately affects blacks, though people of all races are feeling the sting of these tools of the state. We are living in a police state, after all. So with cops going berserk all over the country, can one really blame Mr. Canty? Maybe he won't experience the same harassment from Canadian police.

Used to be, stats on how much television the average person watches in a given day were pretty horrifying. Hours of people's lives, gobbled up in front of the never ending stream of propaganda on the "boob tube"...

But these days we have computers! And tablets! And smart phones! (Oh my...)

Now a study by led by Nottingham Trent University has found that the average person is checking their smart phone a whopping 85 times a day. And many of them don't even realize how often they are doing it. People get up in the morning and check it first thing, and it is the last thing they look at before they close their eyes to go to sleep at night.

UK police ask for the legal right to view everyone's internet search history

UK Police are asking the government for new surveillance powers to be able to view the Internet search history of every single person in the country.

Richard Berry, the National Police Chiefs' Council spokesman told The Guardian that "We want to police by consent, and we want to ensure that privacy safeguards are in place. But we need to balance this with the needs of the vulnerable and the victims. We essentially need the 'who, where, when and what' of any communication - who initiated it, where were they and when did it happened. And a little bit of the 'what', were they on Facebook, or a banking site, or an illegal child-abuse image-sharing website?"

"Five years ago, [a suspect] could have physically walked into a bank and carried out a transaction. We could have put a surveillance team on that but now, most of it is done online. We just want to know about the visit," he added.

After spending 14 years at the Guantanamo Bay camp, the last British inmate, Shaker Aamer will have a difficult task reintegrating into society. Besides his family and health, the only thing Aamer cares about is spreading the truth about what he had gone through.

Aamer, 46, was repatriated to the UK on Friday, after spending years in the American military prison in Cuba with no charges ever having been pressed - and no chance of getting any compensation. But getting reparations is not something that Aamer is looking for, his lawyer Clive Stafford Smith explained to RT.

"You got to remember that the overwhelming majority of people who have been held for many years without trial in Guantanamo Bay by the United States received not one penny of compensation. And Shaker will never receive a single penny of compensation from the United State for everything that he has gone through," Smith said.


Comment: The global "self-righteous" dictator for humanity has finally done "way too little" "way too late." Good luck to Aamer, his campaign for truth and justice and his return to a life stolen without cause. We all pay a price for the blatant violation of law and innocence of any human being, no matter the circumstances, no matter the country, no matter the outcome.

If you wanted more proof that we're living in one of the strangest times in human history, here it is: Game developers have just created a virtual reality simulation titled "08:46″ which replicates the 9/11 attack for Oculus Rift. It took the 6 member development team 3 months and 'countless hours of research' to create the game, which shows users what it was like to be on the top floors of the World Trade Center during the attack.

The narrative driven game will let players assume the role of an office worker who has to make life or death decisions while trapped in the North Tower. Though the controversial game was released on the last anniversary of 9/11, it somehow stayed under the media's radar until this week. Reactions to the game have been mixed so far. Some are calling it inappropriate and in poor taste, and have said that it's too soon to make an interactive game for such a tragic event. Proponents of the simulation say that it pales in comparison to the countless war games that are available, and that unlike those games, "08:46″ actually attempts to help users empathize with the victims of 9/11.

Four people, including a suspected gunman, died Saturday after a shooting spree that ended in a gun battle on the street between the suspect and police.

Officers were responding to a report of shots fired at about 8:45 a.m. MT at a home here when less than a mile away near a fast-food restaurant they spotted a suspect who matched the description of the person they wanted to find. Lt. Catherine Buckley of the Colorado Springs Police Department said the suspect fired, and officers shot back, killing him.

Authorities did not release the names of the suspect or the victims, and the motive for the crime is unknown.

Matt Abshire, 21, said he looked outside his apartment window and saw a man shoot someone with a rifle. Then Abshire said he ran to the street to follow the man and called police.

An Egyptian ground service official who carried out a pre-flight inspection of the Russian passenger plane that crashed in the Sinai Peninsula said Sunday that the Airbus A321-200 appeared to be in good condition. The Metrojet plane, bound for St. Petersburg in Russia, crashed 23 minutes after it took off from Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday morning. The 224 people on board, all Russian except for four Ukrainians and one Belarusian, died. The Egyptian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said he was a member of a technical inspection team that included two Russians.
"We are all shocked. It was a good plane. Everything checked out in 35 minutes," the official told The Associated Press. The closest the plane came to being in trouble, he said, was three months ago when the pilot aborted takeoff halfway through because of a system error. "That's almost routine though," he said.
However, a Russian TV channel late on Saturday quoted the wife of the co-pilot as saying her husband had complained about the plane's condition. Natalya Trukhacheva, identified as the wife of co-pilot Sergei Trukhachev, said a daughter "called him up before he flew out. He complained before the flight that the technical condition of the aircraft left much to be desired."

1 killed, 1 injured, gunman remains at large in Winston-Salem State University shooting

One person has been killed and another was injured in a shooting at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. The suspected perpetrator remains at large.

The incident was reported at about 1:20am local time, the school said in a Facebook post.

"We can confirm that there has been one fatality and one injured individual," the post said. "Both are believed to be students."

A lockdown was put on the campus 10 minutes later and remained in place for over three hours.

The gunman was described as a male, with the school calling on witnesses with any information to come forward.

Sunday's incident is the latest in a series of recent shootings on US campuses. On October 9, a gunman opened fire at Northern Arizona University, killing one and wounding three.

Viktor Sorochenko, an official with the Intergovernmental Aviation Committee, made the comments after inspecting the crash site on Egypt's Sinai peninsula. The Russian Airbus A321 which crashed in Egypt Saturday killing 224 broke into pieces midair, but it is still too early to determine the cause, Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) said Sunday.
"It is too early to draw conclusions," MAK executive director Viktor Sorochenko said. "Disintegration of the fuselage took place in the air, and the fragments are scattered around a large area [about 20 square kilometers]", the official added.
In a separate development, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the investigation into the crash causes could take months.
"This is a complicated matter and requires advanced technologies and broad investigations that could take months," he told army recruits in a televised speech on Sunday.
A Kogalymavia/Metrojet Airbus A321 en route to St. Petersburg from the resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh with 217 passengers and seven crew on board, crashed in the Sinai Peninsula, leaving no survivors. The Sinai air crash became the deadliest air accident in the history of Russian aviation, surpassing the 1985 disaster in Uzbekistan, where 200 people died.
