Society's Child
Geoffroy Didier, vice president of the council of the Paris region and member of the Republican party, first announced the suggestion on France 1, before using his Facebook page to expand on the idea.
"I offer to detect radicalization of young people as early as possible to stop this process, and to be able to protect the teenager, the family and society. In particular, I suggest creating a 'radicalization test' for any youth enrolled in a college or high school whose behavior has been identified as a concern by the educational community."
The test would be in the form of an interview between the student and a psychologist to estimate the 'radicalization risk', and would include questions "to confirm or contradict the existence of an Islamic radicalization process," Didier added in his Facebook message.
The questions could include the following: "Do you refuse sports activities on the pretext that they are mixed?" "How would you describe the recent attacks in France?" "What do you think of jihad?" and "Have you ever viewed videos or websites calling for Jihad?"
Should the test prove 'positive', the teenager's parents "will be informed, and psychological as well as educational support will be implemented immediately, to halt the radicalization process."
Didier said the student will then have to be tested to assess the progress of the 'de-radicalization'. If the process doesn't go as planned, the school will have to inform law enforcement authorities.
After the French official's comments emerged online, hundreds of users took to Twitter, mainly to express their outrage over the suggestion, and mostly with a liberal sprinkling of humor.
The study published in the scientific journal "Sleep Medicine" might be a relief for those who worried that bedtime reading off of electronic devices can disturb one's sleep patterns and bring harm to one's health. It might be a relief, however, if you only read every other word. The finding suggests that "two hours of evening reading on a self-luminous tablet [...] does not alter sleep," but only in the case of "daytime bright light exposure."
Neuroscientists at Uppsala University say they surveyed 14 young men and women, first exposing them to bright light for hours during the afternoon and then asking them to read for two hours in the evening. One half of the group was reading off of a tablet, and the other half off of a paper book. In the morning following evening reading, all participants were asked about the time it took for them to fall asleep, how well they had slept, and how well rested they felt. After comparing the results for two weeks, researchers discovered that the two groups' levels of melatonin (hormone affecting human sleep-wake cycle), was the same for both gadget-users and old-fashioned readers.
"Melatonin is sensitive to light, and bright light during the day helps suppress its production and release. That is to say, if you expose yourself to bright light during the day, your brain exhibits a strong drive to produce and release melatonin during evening hours," the study concludes, adding that bright light exposure actually eliminates the undesirable effects of light-emitting electronic devices on sleep.
So, what the Uppsala team says, is that no matter what you read before bedtime, you'll fall asleep just fine if you soak in bright sunlight the entire day (Pokemon Go lovers would probably rejoice at the news). Apparently, if you toil your day away in an office without sunlight, or if it's, say, winter, you're out of luck

Australian model Mecca Laalaa wearing an Islamic swimsuit (or burqini).
The party was set for mid-September at the Speed Water Park in the Pennes-Mirabeau commune near Marseille. The event was organized by Smile 13, which describes itself as a sports and social event group for women and children.
The group said the party was "exclusively for women, girls, and boys under 10," with female attendees urged to wear burqinis - swimsuits for Muslim women that cover the whole body expect the face, hands and feet - because there will be male guards present.
On Monday, the manager of the aquatic center, together with the mayor of Pennes-Mirabeau, Michel Amiel, met to discuss the event and decided not to give it the green light, France Bleu newspaper reported.
Amiel later told France Bleu that he had made the decision to help "calm down the situation."
"The manager of the pool had not considered the sheer emotion that organizing this event could generate," he said. "We saw the reactions on social networks that were completely outrageous, Islamophobic, xenophobic, and racist, which I totally condemn, but given the circumstances, we have to cool things down."
Comment: Way to go citizens of Pennes-Mirabeau. All those tweeters are so proud of depriving some women and children of one day of relaxation because of their prejudice and xenophobia. Pathetic.

The two young boys were in rowing boats in the Imbé, Rio Grande do Sul state, when one fell into the water and drowned.
Two nine-year-old boys were playing on rowing boats on Monday and one fell into the river and drowned, a police statement said. Media reports said the boys were hunting Pokemon characters, a version of events that was included in an initial military police report. Parents of the boys, however, denied they were playing Pokemon Go and said the Alcatel One Touch phone belonging to the surviving child did not have the app installed on it.
But police have not ruled out that the game could have been linked to the drowning. "The smartphone we seized today does not have the app for the game. We are investigating whether or not it had been installed," said Antônio Carlos Ractz, chief of the civilian police in the town of Imbé, Rio Grande do Sul state. "If it was there, we'll study legal action against the app's maker, because it has no age restrictions and has already caused accidents the world over," Ractz said by telephone.
Comment: Sounds like this instance questions remain regarding Pokemon Go culpability, but the risks involved in this hallucinatory game have manifested world-wide. It has become an epidemic with dire consequences, the results of reduced awareness and protective cognition.
The Italians are trying to transfer migrants and refugees to reception centres in other parts of the country in order to prevent the development of ramshackle camps such as the notorious 'Jungle' in Calais and the tent village that sprung up earlier this year at Idomeni, along the border between Greece and Macedonia. "Our border with France will not become another Calais," Angelino Alfano, the Italian interior minister, told La Repubblica newspaper.
There is increasing frustration among the refugees and migrants stuck at the border, many of whom are living in charity-run centres where they are provided with basic shelter and food and drink. Others are living on rocky shoals on the Italian side of the frontier, hoping for an opportunity to make a clandestine crossing. Hundreds of migrants are also stranded on Italy's border with Switzerland, where they had hoped to claim asylum.
Blocked from crossing the frontier by the Italian authorities, around 400 are camping out in a park in the lakeside town of Como, which traditionally attracts well-heeled visitors during the summer months, most notably George Clooney and his British human rights lawyer wife, Amal. Mario Lucini, Como's mayor, yesterday [tue] said the situation was becoming "worrying".
But the refugees and migrants are determined to do all they can to cross the border. Many are in search of relatives already living in northern Europe.

Living under psychological and physical abuse, refugees suffer conditions worse than criminals, especially the children.
The Guardian received the leak from inside the detention system which exposes more than 2,000 reports detailing assault, sexual abuse, self harm and unfit living conditions, half of which concern children. It provides a damning case against the Australian government for failing to act on previous reports or to properly care for those under its detention.
While a 2015 investigation by the Australian Senate into the Nauru detention center revealed worrying conditions for refugees, including incidents of sexual assault and self-harm, new revelations provide a greater scale to the problems at the offshore site. The leaks reveal 1,086 incidents involving children, who make up only 18 percent of Nauru's 442 detainees. There are 59 reports of assault on children within the files.
Perhaps the most chilling reports come from incidents of children acting abnormally, likely as a result of trauma and their internment. One girl sewed her mouth shut, and a guard reacted by laughing. Another girl pointed to her vagina and said a male detainee "cut her from under." Thirty cases of self-harm in children were reported, and over 150 cases of threatened self-harm in children.
Comment: Australia has a long way to go to rectify conditions in detention centers and refugee camps. It is particularly neglectful and brutal regarding children's rights, suggesting a deep-rooted pathological element in control.

Gwinnett County Police Officer, Zachary Wilkerson, 35, was arrested Sunday on multiple charges relating to stalking and abusing his estranged wife. Wilkerson also threatened to use his police power to inflict harm on his wife.
According to officials, a friend of Wilkerson's estranged wife called police after she received some disturbing text message from the officer. While Wilkerson was on duty, he had been stalking his estranged wife and her boyfriend, according to officials. "The text messages were so alarming that she decided to call police to check on her friend's well-being," Cpl. Deon Washington said in a news release.
Comment: Are persons/personalities with violent tendencies more attracted to a law enforcement job? Is it the job that brings out these tendencies in otherwise relatively peaceful people? Until the permissiveness and low standard of personal conduct allowed in law enforcement occupations is reversed, these scenarios will continue. The trend in US police forces to imitate military procedure and view the public as the enemy feeds this loop, with dangerous consequences and implications for the American society at large and especially those at home. Cop families without recourse are victims in waiting.
Comment: And people still wonder why so many African-Americans are taking to the streets in protest at police brutality. Whether or not the killing or abuse of an African-American by a police officer was justified is NOT the point. The point is, why do so many African-American males find themselves in confrontation with the police? What are the social conditions that produce this? Read on.
The median African-American household's net worth is just over $7,000, compared to white households with more than $111,000.
According to a new study that concludes the gap is so wide, it would take black families over 200 years to catch up. The study called 'The Ever-Growing Gap', released by the Corporation for Enterprise Development and the Institute for Policy Studies on Tuesday, examined wealth accumulation over the past 30 years.
Wealth-building policies have favored white families over black families, the study found, including the GI bill and generous mortgage rates after WWII that disproportionately helped white families achieve wealth at a time of nationwide segregation.
The federal government spent more on schooling for veterans than on the Marshall Plan, which helped rebuild Europe's economy. "Along with funding higher education on that massive scale, the GI bill also financed 40 percent of the mortgages in 1946 and 1947," stated the report, explaining the economic boom of the 1950s for so many white Americans.
The study said the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s challenged segregation, which contributed to some progress for African-Americans in the last 30 years.
According to US Census Bureau data, in 2013, 83.4 percent of African-Americans received a high school diploma, or its equivalent, up from 25.6 percent in 1964. Graduation rates for African-Americans in 1968 were 38 percent of the white rate, whereas today it is more than 60 percent.
When poverty was examined, it showed a decline from nearly 42 percent for African-Americans in 1966 to about 27 percent in 2012.Despite those gains, the study found African-Americans made almost no gains in income, and "do not even earn 60 percent of what white Americans earn, and this gap has barely moved in more than 40 years."
Comment: As long as the 1% are in control and policies favor this minority, none of the remainder of US society will gain enough footing to secure a comfortable future. Financial game changers ultimately only benefit the rich. Empty promises, higher taxes, lower returns...for the middle and lower class it is the rule.
While many major news outlets jumped on the obvious fact that DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and other officials were chained in an email questioning Bernie Sanders' religion to undermine his support among voters, Marijuana.com's Tom Angell dug deeper to find a daily e-newsletter sent to Capitol Hill insiders that included a paid advertisement from the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) warning against the dangers of marijuana.
"Two plains have already landed, everything is ok, everybody is safe," a source at the Brussels Airport told Sputnik.
Belgian prosecutors said the threat was serious enough to take action, although no details were disclosed, according to VRT. Later in the day, kicak RTBF reported citing the Belgian federal prosecutor that the bomb threats appeared to be false.
"After an investigation, the prosecutor's office found that there is no threat, the situation returned to normal, the planes fly on schedule," the Belgian TV channel reported.
