8-year-old follows Tennessee lawmaker around Capitol until he drops welfare bill

Image
A Tennessee lawmaker has relented and agreed to drop his bill linking academic performance to the family's welfare benefits after an 8-year-old girl shamed him by following him around the state Capitol.

On his way to vote on Thursday, state Sen. Stacey Campfield (R) was confronted by 8-year-old homeschooler Aamira Fetuga, who presented him with a petition signed by people opposing his welfare bill, according to the Tennessean. Nearby, a choir of about 60 activists sang "Jesus Loves the Little Children."

"You are so weak, to not listen to a child," a parent said as Campfield walked away with the girl following.

"Why do you want to cut benefits for people?" 8-year-old Fetuga asked after she caught up with him on a Capitol escalator.

"Well, I wouldn't as long as the parent shows up to school and goes to two parent-teacher conferences and they're exempt," the state Senator explained.

British public pays its respects to passing of Margaret Thatcher by propelling 1930s Wizard of Oz song - "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" - to number one spot!

Chart show will treat anti-Thatcher song as a news item

The BBC was accused of caving in to pressure and censoring the will of record-buyers after ruling that it would broadcast just five seconds of "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" during Sunday's chart run-down.

Tony Hall, the new BBC Director-General, approved a "compromise" which will prevent the song, which is heading towards the number one slot after being adopted as a posthumous protest by opponents of Lady Thatcher, being aired in full by Radio 1.

Instead a five-second clip will be played during a special news report, broadcast during Sunday's Top 40 Chart Show, presented by Jameela Jamil, explaining why a song from 1930s film The Wizard Of Oz had made the charts. The song itself is only 51 seconds long.

Comment: Good old BBC, government mouthpiece since, well... forever!

Ben Cooper, Radio 1 Controller who made the announcement, said the decision was "a compromise and it is a difficult compromise to come to."

The executive said he has yet to decide whether the words "Ding dong the witch is dead" will actually appear within the report, which will explain to listeners why Lady Thatcher was so divisive and the subject of a "hate campaign".

Comment: The BBC hides behind concern that teenagers won't understand that Thatcher was a ruthless leader who plunged their country into the state it's in, when in truth they were looking for any excuse to minimise further publicity this extraordinary protest will generate.

All together now....

Ding dong the witch is dead!...

Brittany Ozarowski, 21, was indicted yesterday in Long Island for allegedly faking cancer to fund her heroin addiction.
A New York woman was indicted Wednesday on charges that she scammed her family and local businesses out of thousands of dollars by claiming to have cancer. The district attorney said she used the money she collected to support a heroin addiction.

Brittany Ozarowski, 21, of Long Island, allegedly scammed donors for at least 13 months, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. She collected money from donation jars at small businesses and fundraising events created in her name. She allegedly even conned her family and set up a website, brittanyozarowski.com, which claimed she had bone, brain, ovarian, stomach and thyroid cancer, and that "treatments are about $33,000 each day."

"There was no cancer, there was no chemotherapy, there was no radiation," said Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota. "The only thing that there was, was heroin and more heroin."

Ozarowski was indicted on 24 counts, including forgery, grand larceny and scheme to defraud, prompting Spota to call the scam "despicable" and announce at a press conference that Ozarowski had "absolutely no conscience at all."

More than $4M in jewelry stolen from Connecticut store

Image
More than $4 million worth of jewelry was stolen from a Fairfield store by two armed men who along with others carried out a home invasion more than 40 miles away, kidnapping the store manager and another employee, Connecticut authorities said Friday.

Four or five men wearing masks and gloves bound and gagged with duct tape the manager, employee and two others Thursday at the Meriden residence, police said.

The two employees were then taken at gunpoint in the manager's BMW and driven from Meriden to Fairfield, police said. Authorities say the robbery of the safe at Lenox Jewelry took five minutes.

Vicious beaver attacks and kills man in Belarus

A beaver swims in a pool at a zoo in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
A man in Eastern Europe has reportedly died after being attacked by a beaver he was attempting to photograph.

The 60-year-old former serviceman was on a fishing trip at Lake Shestakov, Belarus, with two companions when the group stopped to snap the animal by the side of the road, according to the Daily Telegraph. But the incensed rodent viciously pounced on the victim and bit his thigh.

"It was early morning and already light when they saw a beaver by the road, which was unusual because beavers are nocturnal," Sergei Shtyk, deputy head of the local wildlife inspectorate, told the British newspaper. "One of them went up to be photographed with it, and the animal attacked him and bit him twice, cutting an artery in his thigh, before running away."

ExxonMobil nightmare grows as Arkansas residents report illnesses

Crews work to clean up from an oil pipeline spill in a Mayflower, Ark., neighborhood Wednesday, April 3, 2013.
It just keeps on getting worse for ExxonMobil and its major oil pipeline spill in Mayflower, Ark. This week, officials were bracing for a major storm that threatened to send more of the spilled oil from the Canadian tar sands into nearby Lake Conway - a major, environmentally sensitive waterway:
Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says he's concerned about the effect heavy rainfall could have on dispersing oil that spilled last month when an ExxonMobil pipeline ruptured at Mayflower.

McDaniel said Wednesday that he and other officials were watching the weather closely as storms raked parts of the state.

A severe thunderstorm hit the area Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of weather-related incidents at the site where ExxonMobil Pipeline Co.'s Pegasus pipeline ruptured on March 29.

ExxonMobil and local officials say crews have secured equipment and strengthened a containment system to protect the main body of nearby Lake Conway.
But the sad reality is that no matter what the weather is in the state of Arkansas this week, major damage - the result of ExxonMobil's wanton recklessness - has already been done there. And what's chilling is how many similarities we're seeing with this event to the horrific ways in which BP dealt with 2010′s Deepwater Horizon spill offshore. Just as happened in the Gulf of Mexico, ExxonMobil has gone to over-the-top lengths to restrict public and media access, including absurd and hard-to-legally-justify flight restrictions. And of course - exactly as BP had done three years earlier - ExxonMobil also tried to greatly underplay the extent of environmental damage. The truth is that the authorities still have no idea how much of the oil was actually spilled:

Arrest of 3 teens in sexual assault, suicide opens raw wounds

Undated photo provided by Audrie Pott's family. The teenager from Saratoga, Calif., hanged herself in September after allegedly being sexually assaulted while drunk and unconscious at a party. Photos were later posted online. Three teenage boys were arrested Thursday and charged with sexual asaault in the case.
The names of the suspects were not released because they are minors, but Robert Allard, attorney for Audrie's parents, says they hope the teens won't be treated as juveniles at trial, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

"The family has been trying to understand why their loving daughter would have taken her life at such a young age and to make sure that those responsible would be held accountable," Allard says.

"After an extensive investigation that we have conducted on behalf of the family, there is no doubt in our minds that the victim, then only 15 years old, was savagely assaulted by her fellow high school students while she lay on a bed completely unconscious."

The attorney said students used cell phones to share photos of the attack, and that the images went viral.

He alleges that at least three high school boys assaulted Audrie in the bedroom at the home of a friend whose parents were away for the weekend, patch.com reported.

USA Today and the Associated Press do not, as a rule, identify victims of sexual assault. But in this case, Pott's family wanted her name and case known, Allard says. The family also provided a photo to the AP.

Can a hacker hijack a plane with an Android app?

Imagine the kind of havoc a malicious hacker could cause if he or she were able to take over an airplane simply using his Android phone. With a tap of his or her fingers, the hacker could arbitrarily control the plane remotely and redirect its path. If you think this is only something that could happen in a Hollywood movie, think again, because that's exactly the scenario a German security researcher laid out on Wednesday at a conference in Amsterdam.

Hugo Teso, a security researcher for the German IT consultancy firm N.Runs - he is a trained commercial pilot as well - explained at the Hack in the Box security conference that a protocol used to transmit data to commercial airplanes can be hacked, turning the hacker into a full-fledged hijacker.

The flawed protocol is a data exchange system called Aircraft Communications Addressing and Report System, or ACARS. Exploiting its flaws, as well as the bugs found in flight management software made by companies like Honeywell, Thales, and Rockwell Collins, Teso maintains he can take over a plane by sending it his own malicious radio signals. To do that, he has created an exploit framework, codenamed SIMON, and an Android app called PlaneSploit that can communicate with the airplanes' Flight Management Systems (FMS).

"You can use this system to modify approximately everything related to the navigation of the plane," Teso told Forbes' Andy Greenberg in an interview. "That includes a lot of nasty things."

Rehtaeh Parsons killed herself after she said she had been raped and bullied
Nova Scotia teenager committed suicide after year of torment over rape allegations and online picture of assault

Hacktivist group Anonymous has threatened to release the names of four boys accused of raping a teenage girl who killed herself after being bullied for more than a year over the incident.

Rehtaeh Parsons, 17, hanged herself after months of harassment over claims that she was raped by four teenagers in 2011. The boys were also accused of taking a picture of the alleged incident and circulating it online.

She died two days after she was found hanged in her bathroom in her home in Nova Scotia, Canada, after her parents decided to remove her from life support. They said she had been on the receiving end of months of tormenting and bullying by schoolmates after a picture of the incident was passed around.

Police investigated allegations of sexual assault at a party in Cole Harbour but said there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone.

In response, Anonymous hacktivists have warned police that they will expose the identities of the four suspects if there is no legal action.
