Moscow bank 'hostage situation' was a drill

breaking news
An unidentified person has taken several people hostage in a bank in the north of Moscow, reports say, adding that police have already arrived at the scene.

Comment: RT reports:
The alleged hostage situation in a branch of a Moscow bank in the north of the Russian capital was in fact a drill, the bank confirmed in a statement to Russian news agencies.

Earlier on Wednesday, media reports emerged that an unidentified person took several people hostage in a local branch of Sberbank. Photos and videos of police vehicles at the scene were also posted online.

Later, the bank denied the reports, saying that the situation was merely a drill.

These "scheduled exercises" are aimed to protect customers and employees of the bank from "illegal infringements," a statement said. The employees, police, and emergency services took part in the drill, it added.

The statement also stressed that during the drill, the office was closed for customers. It is due to open later on Wednesday.

An Austrian court has sided with Russia's state-backed vodka maker in the battle over the Stolichnaya and Moskovskaya brands, ordering the Dutch-based Spirits International B.V to pay compensation for using them illegally.

Stolichnaya vodka has long been one of the world's most recognizable brands associated with Russia. However, the iconic trademark is a highly contested one, with state-owned Soyuzplodoimport waging a heated legal dispute with the Dutch company for over 15 years.

While many remain sceptical about the whole concept of reincarnation, one woman believes in it so much that she allegedly sought to kidnap a 21-year-old student in Mumbai she believed had been her life partner in a past life.

Veronica Borode, 35, also named locally as Kiran, was taken into custody by police on Saturday night along with a Mumbai police constable believed to have helped her in the bizarre plan.

The United States is the largest debtor nation in the world and "it's getting worse and worse," according to investment guru Jim Rogers, who talked to RT on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.

Rogers admits that he still owns a lot of US dollars but not because it's a sound currency.

"So, you would say why do you own it [US currency - Ed.] then? I own it because more turmoil is coming, people look for a safe haven in turmoil so they will go to the dollar. It's not safe but they think it is."

The investor explained that the US currency is going to get higher but many countries like China, Iran, Russia and others are now trying to get rid of it.

Broadway star Carole Cook told a photographer that she'd like to see Donald Trump assassinated after a fan of the president unfurled a 'Trump 2020' banner during a performance of 'Frozen' the week before.

The 94-year-old actress was leaving a Hollywood restaurant with her husband on Sunday night when the pair were accosted by a TMZ paparazzo. The photographer asked Cook if a theater was an appropriate place to bring a Trump banner to.

"My answer to that is," Cook replied, "where is John Wilkes Booth when you need him? Right?" referring to the actor and Confederate sympathizer who shot President Abraham Lincoln dead in a theater in 1865.

US has been meddling in Venezuelan democracy for 20 years

It's hypocritical for the US to meddle in other countries' affairs - and be absolutely fine with that - while inciting a national outcry over the mere hint of foreign interference in US elections, journalist Paul Dobson told RT.

The Venezuelan government said it plans to hold a march on Tuesday to protest alleged US meddling in its affairs. This follows American media reports that Washington was working to topple President Nicolas Maduro, reports which the US has neither confirmed nor denied.

Claims that the US was attempting to orchestrate a coup in Caracas were published in a New York Times article. Citing officials on both sides, it alleged that meetings were held with 'rebellious' Venezuelan military figures before eventually being halted.

"US policy preference for a peaceful, orderly return to democracy in Venezuela remains unchanged," National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said in a statement following the report.

Censored: Australian cartoonist Mark Knight's Twitter account disappears amid Serena Williams 'racism' storm

The Twitter account belonging to Australian cartoonist Mark Knight has disappeared amid the backlash over an image depicting tennis star Serena Williams after her controversial US Open defeat.

Knight's cartoon, which appeared in the Herald Sun, showed Williams as an overweight baby stomping on her tennis racket - a reference to the US player's outburst at the umpire in her defeat to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final.

Knight faced a barrage of abuse over the image, reportedly including death threats, with many attacking the cartoon as "racist."

Knight's Twitter account has now disappeared, with those attempting to access the @Knightcartoons profile being met with the message: "Sorry, that page doesn't exist."

Comment: Most political or social commentary cartoons caricature the people they are referring to, and Serena Williams is no different. Especially as she is a famous sports figure that went on a temper tantrum during the finals of one of the biggest tennis events. Below is a drawing from the same cartoonist just a few days earlier. Was this the hallmark of sexism, too? Of course not. So what we are seeing here isn't about women's rights, but censorship and special treatment Williams thought herself entitled to.

Crosstalk discusses the US strategy in Syria - concludes that the 'Deep State has full control'

Residents of Idlib province flee to safety, as US and Syrian forces prepare for battle
Given President Trump's policy reversal on Syria, the US looks set to remain mired in the 7-year conflict indefinitely. With Syria in rubble, and with the risk of clashes with Russia, our panelists ask, what's the US strategy?

Speaking during RT's Crosstalk, hosted by Peter Lavelle, security analyst Mark Sleboda noted that President Trump's willingness to launch strikes on Syria is at odds with his oft-stated goal of pulling out of the conflict.

"I think the deep state has full control of foreign and military policy as regards Syria," Sleboda said, citing a recent New York Times op-ed in which an anonymous Trump official described a concerted effort from a group of officials to covertly steer and shape the president's policies.

Take this job and shove it: People quitting work leaves 660K more job openings

unemployed
The US labor market continues to grow at a blistering pace.

According to the BLS, in July the number of job openings in the US hit a new all time high of 6.939 million, up from an upward revised 6.822 million, and a new all time high.

More importantly, despite recent revisions, July was the second consecutive month in which total job openings surpassed the number of unemployed Americans, which last month declined to 6.28 million. This means that there are 660 thousand more job openings than unemployed Americans who are seeking a job (how accurate the BLS data is, is another matter entirely).
