Turkey & Gazprom come to agreement on construction of land portion of Europe-bound Turkish Stream

Russian state energy giant Gazprom
Russian state energy giant Gazprom and the Turkish government have reached a deal on the construction of the land-based part of the Turkish Stream branch that will bring Russian gas to European consumers.

The parties signed a protocol that would allow the construction, which was stalled by a legal rift over gas prices, to go forward. Gazprom and Turkey's state-owned BOTAS struck an agreement detailing the terms and conditions of the works, the Russian company said in a statement. It noted that the deal "allows to move to practical steps for the implementation of the project."

The works will be carried out by a joint venture called TurkAkim Gaz Tasima AS. It will be owned by Gazprom and BOTAS in equal shares, Gazprom said.

Comment: The Turkish Stream pipeline has had a long, tortuous history. Still, Russia's patience and flexibility has paid off. Europe must be breathing a sigh of relief at soon no longer being subject to Ukraine's tantrums.

Germans aren't buying the anti-Russian propaganda

Warheit statt Lügenpresse Truth instead Lying Media German

"The truth instead of the Lying Media!"
Despite "poison gas", "barrel bombs" and "annexation" - a large part of propaganda is going nowhere in Germany. Recent surveys show a pronounced media literacy among many citizens and a great yearning for German-Russian rapprochement.

The first survey of interest might be the one Forsa Institute did on behalf of RTL (private media TV) about the trust of Germans in their öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk, the public broadcast. It showed that only 48% of Germans think ARD and ZDF would do their job well (9%) or very well (39%). 30% of Germans think that they do a mediocre job, and 14% think they do it badly. Yet still 74% support the dual system of public and private broadcast. So, Germans do want their public broadcast TV, but they criticize it and 44% consider the monthly fee of €17.50 too high. A bigger problem with the TV tax, as most citizens call it, is that it is charged per household, regardless of whether you own a TV or not. Even cars have to pay for their radios (with a few marginal exceptions), which is especially a burden for small businesses like plumbers since they have to pay for almost every rolling thing in their car pool. So, public broadcasting, yay, funding and information, rather nay.

Another poll conducted by Civey about the trust of German citizens into the press in general shows that 53.3% have no confidence in the media, a fifth (20.8%) has even absolutely no confidence. A third of Germans (33.9%) as strong confidence in the media, but only 1.9% have total confidence. So, if you include the weekly and daily rags, the trusting citizens become a (slight) minority.

So far so trustworthy. The following surveys, however, really surprised me to my delight.

The Oscar-winning actor said any suggestion that he assaulted women or created an unsafe workplace was false and apologized to anyone he might have upset.
Morgan Freeman has been dropped by Visa from its advertising campaign after the actor was accused of harassment and inappropriate behavior by eight women.

"We are aware of the allegations that have been made against Mr. Freeman. At this point, Visa will be suspending our marketing in which the actor is featured," the company said.

Visa has been featuring the 80-year-old Hollywood star in its commercials and using his voice in advertisements. Freeman, who once lent his voice to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, has also provided voiceovers for several commercials, including for USA CORPS, Save the Children's "Be a Mentor" program, and Turkish Airlines.

Vancouver public transit system TransLink also announced plans to put its current marketing campaign on hold. The ads feature Freeman's voice promoting Visa credit cards and mobile payments on the city's transit system.

West Hollywood Mayor John Duran, who honored porn star Stormy Daniels last week for her role in leading the "resistance" to President Donald Trump, faced sexual harassment claims that led to the city paying out $500,000 on his behalf in 2016.

The Los Angeles Times reported at the time:
A former aide to West Hollywood City Councilman John Duran who sued the city and his boss alleging sexual harassment and wrongful punishment is set to receive $500,000 after settling with both parties earlier this month, according to the agreement obtained by The Times.

Under the terms of the settlement with former City Council deputy Ian Owens, Duran and the city admitted no wrongdoing.

...

Duran has repeatedly denied the allegations, saying Owens did not accuse him of harassment until he was accused of wrongdoing himself.

Duran has acknowledged that he and Owens were intimate and that they met through Grindr. He said they became friends and that he hired Owens because his degree in finance and experience in hotel development and real estate made him well-qualified for the job.

Netanyahu demands Iran be denied any military presence in Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chairs the weekly cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem, Sunday, April 15, 2018
Israel has called for Iran to withdraw its military forces from Syria with Tehran insisting it only has military advisers in the country despite Tel-Aviv's numerous claims to the opposite.

Israel has requested Iran to deny any military presence in Syria after Russia said Damascus' forces alone should control Syrian territory near the Israeli and Jordanian borders.

"Our position on Syria is clear. We believe that there is no place for any Iranian military presence, anywhere in Syria," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his parliamentary faction in broadcast remarks.

Comment: Iran begs to differ, as it is in Syria at the invitation of its legitimate government
"No one can force Iran to do this. As long as there is terrorism and the government of Syria wants it, Iran will have a presence [in Syria]. Those who entered the country without the permission of the Syrian authorities must leave," representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran Bahram Kasemi stated as quoted by Tasnim.

The announcement was made in wake of the statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on May 17: the president declared that due to the success of the Syrian army's fight against terrorism and the beginning of the political process, foreign military forces should be withdrawn from the Arabic Republic.

As presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained later, a number of foreign armed forces, currently present in Syria, can leave the country at the beginning of the political process, since they have no legal basis to stay there. The Russian president's special representative for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said that the entire foreign contingent should be withdrawn from Syria, including the troops of the United States, Turkey and the Lebanese Hezbollah forces, specifying that the Russian troops to remain as they were deployed with Damascus' consent.

According to Israeli media outlet Haaretz, the US government paid a generous sum of money to a law firm with close ties to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the month the American embassy was relocated to Jerusalem.

The United States paid $150,000 to law firm E.S. Shimron, I. Molho, Persky & Co. for legal services provided to the US Consulate in Jerusalem from April 9, 2018 to May 14, which marks the period in which the embassy was transferred from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Haaretz reported, citing an official US government website on federal government spending.

Two partners at the firm are believed to be close to the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu: David Shimron is his cousin and the family's personal attorney, while Isaac Molho, Shimron's brother-in-law, has served as Netanyahu's personal envoy on numerous diplomatic missions.

US court finds for transgender student in bathroom battle

Transgender activist Gavin Grimm

Transgender activist Gavin Grimm arrives for the Time 100 Gala in Manhattan, New York, April 25, 2017.
Bathroom access has become a major issue in the battle over transgender rights, and Grimm's has been the most prominent legal case on the subject.

A U.S. judge has ruled that federal law protects a transgender student who fought all the way to the Supreme Court for the right to use a bathroom at a high school in Virginia that corresponded with his gender identity.

U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen in Norfolk rejected a bid by the Gloucester County School Board to dismiss the civil rights lawsuit filed by student Gavin Grimm. Grimm filed the suit in 2015 and graduated from high school last year.

Comment: The transgender bathroom debacle is an non-issue that simply refuses to die. We wonder if Grimm feels that fighting for bathroom rights for four years, stretching beyond graduating from the offending high school, was worth the time and energy.

Elon Musk is being accused of anti-Semitism by some social media users after the Tesla chief's Twitter response to a journalist amid a growing conflict with the media.

The founder of an online publication The Online, Joshua Topolsky, asked Musk: "Do you think it's in the interest of powerful people to A: support a free press that exposes their lies, or B: tear it down so their lies are easier to tell?"

Musk responded: "Who do you think *owns* the press? Hello."

The entrepreneur was non-specific and opted not to answer dozens of follow up questions left by enraged Twitter users. On Sunday, NBC News reporter Ben Collins, who was present at the onset of the brawl, tweeted that Musk's comment attracted lots of anti-Semitic responses, calling on the Tesla boss to condemn them.

Head of the Chechen Republic Kadyrov visits a polling station during the presidential election in Tsentoroy.
The head of the Chechen Republic has ordered a universal DNA test to help identify and retrieve Russian children who had been taken to terrorist-control territories in the Middle East.

"We are now actively working to establish the fates of Russian citizens - women and children - who have ended up in Iraq and Syria, and help them to return. At present, in order secure the return to Russia of children who were born in Middle Eastern countries, I have ordered a collective gathering of DNA test material," Ramzan Kadyrov wrote in his latest post on popular Russian social network, Vkontakte.

"This would not only help to establish the children's relatives, but also would help to give the kids Russian citizenship," he added.
