A group of campaigners has set up home outside George Osborne's office in Knutsford in a protest against the legislation known as the 'bedroom tax'.

UK Uncut arrived in Knutsford at lunchtime today, Saturday, April 13, where they are protesting against the government's decision to charge housing tenants an extra amount for having a spare bedroom in their property.

The organisation told the Guardian the move would mean that tenants who are considered to have one spare bedroom will have to find an extra £529 per year - more than £10 a week - while those considered to have two spare bedrooms will be asked to pay £945 a year more.

Elderly woman survives komodo dragon attack

Komodo dragons have long, forked tongues that they use to help smell and taste.
An 83-year-old Indonesian woman survived a recent attack by a fearsome 2-meter-long (6.6 feet) Komodo dragon and is currently recovering in the hospital.

The attack occurred when Haisah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, was making a broom from a coconut tree, Agence France-Press reported. The reptile pounced and bit down on her hand and Haisah told AFP, "I knew that I faced a fight for survival." She kicked one of the reptile's front legs, which was enough to get it to release her hand, then screamed for help. That is one tough lady!

Haisah's wrist required 35 stitches and was initially paralyzed, though it has since recovered some mobility.

This incident follows a spate of Komodo dragon attacks in recent months on the Indonesian islands that are the native home of the species. Komodo dragons are the world's largest lizard, growing up to 200 pounds (90 kilograms); they are considered a vulnerable species and are protected in their native habitat.

Social media use linked to poor academic performance

The widespread use of media among college students -- from texting to chatting on cell phones to posting status updates on Facebook -- may be taking an academic toll, say researchers with The Miriam Hospital's Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine.

According to a new study, freshmen women spend nearly half their day -- 12 hours -- engaged in some form of media use, particularly texting, music, the Internet and social networking. Researchers found media use, in general, was associated with lower grade point averages (GPAs) and other negative academic outcomes. However, there were two exceptions: newspaper reading and listening to music were actually linked to a positive academic performance

Day care worker arrested for biting child

An Ohio day care worker decided to teach a 5-year-old a lesson by giving him a 'bite' of his own medicine.

When 56-year-old Robin Mullins of Cincinnati found out about a 5-year-old at her day care that was biting other children, Mullins sat him down, then chomped on his arm in order to 'teach him a lesson.'

Mullins' plan of action, however, didn't go over too well with the parents -- or police for that matter. Mullins was arrested and charged Thursday with assault after leaving a visible bite mark on the kid's arm, Colerain Police Officer Eric Renner wrote in court records.

    Sergeant Jeremy Scott said he hoped the former prime minister's death at the age of 87 was 'painful and degrading'.

    The 52-year-old Metropolitan Police officer also suggested the world would be a 'better place' if David Cameron, too, were dead.

    Scotland Yard said today: 'The officer concerned, today submitted his resignation and it was accepted with immediate effect.'

    However a spokesman said he would be 'receiving his full pension at an appropriate time' but refused to give further details of the amount involved.

    Met Commander Allan Gibson added: 'This officer's behaviour was completely unacceptable and it is right that he has resigned.'

    Meanwhile today another public figure, a Labour Party official, was also in hot water for saying Tony Blair should be buried in the same coffin as Mrs Thatcher.

    Writing on Twitter, Sgt Scott questioned whether a flypast would 'bomb' Lady Thatcher's coffin and said her passing was '87 years too late'.

    He said: 'Goodnight Twitter. The world is a better place today now that c*** is dead. Now for Cameron, May and Osborne.'

    The comments of the police officer, sworn to uphold the law, mark a new low in the bitter hate campaign ahead of Lady Thatcher's funeral.

    Comment: The only people mourning Margaret Thatcher are the uber-wealthy. All those whose livelihoods were destroyed by her psychopathic policies are celebrating.

    Angry mother throws toddler so she can fight woman on bus

    When a mother got into a heated argument with a woman on the bus in Connecticut, she started yelling and then threw her baby so she could attack.

    Another passenger caught the incident on video. In it, the woman is in full view as she holds the calm baby on her lap. The young mother starts cussing at the woman, saying she disrespected her in front of her child.

    The audio is not audible at times, but it is apparent that the women were fighting over the relationship a relative of the young mother had with the other woman's boyfriend.

    Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts chided two financial regulators on Thursday, wondering why the men were protecting big banks rather than helping struggling families.

    During a Senate Banking Committee hearing, Warren questioned Daniel P. Stipano of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and Richard Ashton of the Federal Reserve about the Independent Foreclosure Review. The investigation of foreclosure abuses ended in January with a $8.5 billion settlement.

    She accused the two financial regulators of withholding data obtained from the investigation. Warren asked whether they planned to provide evidence of illegal activity to families who were suing banks over wrongful foreclosures.

    Ashton responded that they had not made a decision about that.

    "So I just want to make sure I get this straight," Warren replied. "Families get pennies on the dollar in the settlement for having been the victims of illegal activities or mistakes in the banks' activities. You now know individual cases where the banks violated the law and you're not going to tell the homeowners, or at least it's not clear if you're going to do that?"

    8-year-old follows Tennessee lawmaker around Capitol until he drops welfare bill

    A Tennessee lawmaker has relented and agreed to drop his bill linking academic performance to the family's welfare benefits after an 8-year-old girl shamed him by following him around the state Capitol.

    On his way to vote on Thursday, state Sen. Stacey Campfield (R) was confronted by 8-year-old homeschooler Aamira Fetuga, who presented him with a petition signed by people opposing his welfare bill, according to the Tennessean. Nearby, a choir of about 60 activists sang "Jesus Loves the Little Children."

    "You are so weak, to not listen to a child," a parent said as Campfield walked away with the girl following.

    "Why do you want to cut benefits for people?" 8-year-old Fetuga asked after she caught up with him on a Capitol escalator.

    "Well, I wouldn't as long as the parent shows up to school and goes to two parent-teacher conferences and they're exempt," the state Senator explained.

    Chart show will treat anti-Thatcher song as a news item

    The BBC was accused of caving in to pressure and censoring the will of record-buyers after ruling that it would broadcast just five seconds of "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" during Sunday's chart run-down.

    Tony Hall, the new BBC Director-General, approved a "compromise" which will prevent the song, which is heading towards the number one slot after being adopted as a posthumous protest by opponents of Lady Thatcher, being aired in full by Radio 1.

    Instead a five-second clip will be played during a special news report, broadcast during Sunday's Top 40 Chart Show, presented by Jameela Jamil, explaining why a song from 1930s film The Wizard Of Oz had made the charts. The song itself is only 51 seconds long.


    Comment: Good old BBC, government mouthpiece since, well... forever!


    Ben Cooper, Radio 1 Controller who made the announcement, said the decision was "a compromise and it is a difficult compromise to come to."

    The executive said he has yet to decide whether the words "Ding dong the witch is dead" will actually appear within the report, which will explain to listeners why Lady Thatcher was so divisive and the subject of a "hate campaign".

    Comment: The BBC hides behind concern that teenagers won't understand that Thatcher was a ruthless leader who plunged their country into the state it's in, when in truth they were looking for any excuse to minimise further publicity this extraordinary protest will generate.

    Woman caught in cancer scam to collect money to support heroin addiction

    Brittany Ozarowski, 21, was indicted yesterday in Long Island for allegedly faking cancer to fund her heroin addiction.
    A New York woman was indicted Wednesday on charges that she scammed her family and local businesses out of thousands of dollars by claiming to have cancer. The district attorney said she used the money she collected to support a heroin addiction.

    Brittany Ozarowski, 21, of Long Island, allegedly scammed donors for at least 13 months, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. She collected money from donation jars at small businesses and fundraising events created in her name. She allegedly even conned her family and set up a website, brittanyozarowski.com, which claimed she had bone, brain, ovarian, stomach and thyroid cancer, and that "treatments are about $33,000 each day."

    "There was no cancer, there was no chemotherapy, there was no radiation," said Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota. "The only thing that there was, was heroin and more heroin."

    Ozarowski was indicted on 24 counts, including forgery, grand larceny and scheme to defraud, prompting Spota to call the scam "despicable" and announce at a press conference that Ozarowski had "absolutely no conscience at all."
