A Potteries star-gazer captured the moment a meteor lit up the skies across North Staffordshire.

Martin Kessel captured the object as it flew over Weston Coyney in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The former Newcastle-under-Lyme High School pupil has a camera set up to monitor the skies over Stoke-on-Trent - in the hope of capturing activity in the atmosphere and beyond.

And Martin was in luck, posting the video on his Youtube channel, where he described it as 'large, very bright meteor or fireball' which passed over at 2.02am.

A bright object took social networks by storm last Sunday when Twitter and Facebook shared their experiences of witnessing a bright light streak across the sky at dawn.

According to Tweeters, the sky became inexplicably bright at approximately 2.00 a.m. on Sunday. Some added images to their posts, without specifying whether or not they had been taken during the sighting in question.

A strange streak of light flashes in the sky near the border between Vietnam and Laos on July 8, 2015.
Vietnamese officials are cooperating with colleagues in Laos to identify what created a streak of light in the sky and a big explosion sound after that around the border area on Wednesday night.

As of Thursday afternoon, border guard forces still have not identified the cause of the phenomenon. An army representative has ruled out the possibility of an air crash. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief commander of Vietnam's army, said there has been no report of any issue with a civil or military flight in the area at the time.

Tuan said a piece of space debris could have burned up, causing the light and the explosion. Locals spotted the strange light flashing at around 9 p.m., then something fell and exploded. Curiosity caused heavy traffic jams stretching two kilometers along a national highway in Ha Tinh Province. Dang Vu Tuan Son, head of the Vietnam Astronomy and Cosmology Association, told Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper that the item was more likely a meteor than space junk. Son said space junk is usually small and would not cause such a big explosion.

"But we have to find the debris to know exactly what it was."

If you think asteroids are rare, it's only because they're so small and dark and hard to see. An eye-opening new video (above) shows what the night sky would look like if we could see the near-Earth asteroids astronomers have discovered -- it's quite a swarm.

"We're essentially flying around the sun through this population of asteroids with our eyes closed," Scott Manley, the astronomer who created the animation and posted it to YouTube, says in the video.

Alabama police have called off the search for a 'crashed plane' after it emerged to have been a meteor.

A fireball had been spotted across the sky over Walker County, Alabama, around 1am on Monday morning, and several witnesses called police believing it to be an aviation incident.

Deputies with the Walker and Jefferson County Sheriff's offices investigated it as a possible plane crash between Sumiton and Dora, local news reports.

However, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration has today confirmed that the fireball was a meteor.

The FAA received 'numerous reports' about the fireball, Kathleen Bergen told Fox News' WBRC.com.

Comment: As usual, the "experts" try to explain any unusual sighting of a meteorite as "re-entry". We wonder when they are going to run out of Russian satellites for that excuse. There fact is, there has been a number of indicators, such as an intensification of noctilucent clouds or rare cloud formations that our atmosphere isn't doing exactly what the experts think it should do, due to a dust loading in the upper levels, for example. Meteor? Mystery deepens as loud bang and rumbling in New Zealand baffles experts

Mystery surrounds the origins of a loud rumbling noise heard in the wider Wanganui region on Tuesday night.

The noise happened between 10.15pm and 10.30pm and was audible from Turakina to Waitotara.

It was loud enough to shake the ground in Ratana Pa and reportedly set off the civil defence siren there.

The topic was being discussed widely on social media, including on the Wanganui Chronicle's Facebook page.

Doreen Barns heard it in Putiki, and thought it was an earthquake. "It was extremely loud, it started with a loud bang followed by a rumble."

GeoNet is a project to build and operate a modern geological hazard monitoring system in New Zealand. It comprises of a network of geophysical instruments, automated software applications and skilled staff to detect, analyse and respond to earthquakes, volcanic activity, large landslides, tsunami and the slow deformation that precedes large earthquakes.
Searching the GeoNet website and online there is no information or data to be found relating to meteors. Perhaps we missed the data. Given the report of a loud bang, then rumbling and a tiny earthquake at the same time a distinct possibility is on an overhead explosion by a meteor, which was not seen visually.

Sitting inside approx 10.02PM at Turakina Beach, Wanganui. Very loud bang, shook the house. No siesmic activity on Geonet. Several neighbours came out. Can only put it down to a meteorite

MetService says a ball of fire seen in the sky over Wellington this evening shouldn't be a cause for concern.

Witnesses in Hataitai say the streak of light looked like a meteor or asteroid.

But MetService duty forecaster Leigh Matheson believes it was the contrail of a long-haul aircraft which was due to fly over the city at around that time.

"The lights that were seen over Wellington, we believe, was the contrail of a long-haul aircraft that was flying across the country," Matheson reports. "Around 5.30 in the evening the setting sun lit the contrail up quite brightly."

A fireball has been captured by 3 cameras exploding in the sky over Brazil on June 7, 2015.

The cameras were situated in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo! Amazing!

The space rock was filmed by EXOSS cameras flying over three states at 05:20 am.

Such a triangulation is very rare and permitted to calculate precisely the route of the bright meteor:

The meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere at an angle of 25.5 degrees and at an altitude of 116.7 km. It disintegrated at an altitude of 79 km at a speed of 57 km/s after a flight of about 88 km in 1.5 seconds.
