Puppet Masters
That's the subject of a recent Washington Post report on a heretofore unknown practice at the CIA called "eyewashing."
Before moving to the substance of the article, however, I owe my readers an explanation: The Central Intelligence Agency must approve of everything I write about intelligence, the CIA, foreign policy, diplomacy, the military, and national security — for the rest of my life.
They didn't like this column, even though the source material is freely available to anybody who reads the Post. The CIA consented to let me run it, but only if I redacted a few important sections.
Lord Mervyn King continued his scathing assault on Europe's economic and monetary union, having predicted the beleaguered currency zone will need to be dismantled to free its weakest members from unremitting austerity and record levels of unemployment.
Gangs of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group have intensified activity in the northeast of Syria. The local newspaper Alwatan reports that the militants seized a power plant in the area of Mabruk near the town of Tel Tamer inhabited by the Assyrians, and blocked the Aleppo-Hasakah highway near the Nastell settlement.
According to Kurdish sources, Islamic State gangs have concentrated considerable forces north of Raqqa (520 km from Damascus) in the Al Quntari area and are preparing to launch an offensive. A major concentration of militants has been reported on the Turkish side of the border opposite to the Ras al-Ayn city west of the provincial center Hasakah.
On February 27, Islamic State gangs attacked the town of Tel Abyad, located 100 km from Raqqa on the border with Turkey. It is controlled by units of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the backbone of which is comprised of the Kurdish militia. Fierce fighting continues around Tel Abyad. The Kurds have accused the Turkish artillery of shelling their positions.
Ceasefire in Syria
The ceasefire regimen in Syria has been effective since February 27. Truce does not apply to the terrorist organizations Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State (both organizations outlawed in Russia) and other groups declared terrorist by the UN Security Council. According to the Russian military, truce is being observed by and large, but 15 ceasefire violations had been registered on March 1.
A Paris court ordered General Miller, who was in charge of the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison from 2002 to 2004, to give testimony over charges of unlawful detention and torture brought by two former prisoners.
French citizens Mourad Benchellali and Nizar Sassi were captured by Pakistani forces in 2001 in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks and were handed over to US Army officials. They were suspected of having ties to Al-Qaeda as they had spent two months at a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan. However, the defendants claimed they had been taken to the camp under false pretenses and had never used their 'skills' in combat.
Sassi and Benchellali were released from US custody in 2004 and 2005 respectively, having been interned at Guantanamo, and were taken back to France for trial. They were both acquitted in 2009.
Miller's failure to appear in court is "a dual act of contempt against the French judiciary; he both refused to appear and to provide any explanation about his role and that of the US administration," the detainees' lawyer William Bourdon said, according to AFP.
"The GCC decided to consider the Hezbollah militia, with all its leaders, its factions and organizations affiliated and emanating from it, a terrorist organization," the statement read.
Hezbollah has been assisting the Syrian army in the fight against terrorists and fighting insurgents and jihadist groups on the ground.
Comment: The only reason the West, and now their Gulf fiefdoms, consider Hezbollah a terrorist organization is because they are a thorn in the side of Israel, similar to why Turkey considers Kurdish groups like the YPG terrorists.
Remember the story about Chechen teams of Russian spetsnaz winning the Special Forces World Championship in Jordan a year ago? Well, it turns out they are now there fighting ISIS on the ground. But not in the way one would probably expect. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov tells Russian TV that at the very dawn of the civil war in Syria, his men infiltrated the jihadists. Now when Russia is intervening militarily in Syria, its commanders know where to strike and get feedback on the results.
In the course of the last 24 hours, ceasefire agreements have been signed with four commanders of moderate opposition units, which control Kafar, Shams and Gabagib (Daraa province). Total number of signed agreements has reached 40.
By the mediation of the Russian Federation, negotiations are continued with another 11 leaders of armed formations located in the provinces of Damascus, Daraa, Homs and Aleppo.
Comment: In related news, Turkey continues to shell northern Syria, claiming they are only targeting Daesh and denying Kurdish accounts that Turkey has shelled YPG positions (while in Turkey, 200 civilians in the town of Sur are under siege from regime forces); Turkey also denied Lavrov's allegation that they are sending weapons into Syria under the guise of humanitarian aid (even thought they've been caught red-handed doing exactly that); the U.S. claimed to carry out 21 airstrikes against Daesh in Syria; after apparently realizing that the 'moderate rebels' in Damascus are not so moderate, the UN now says it can't deliver the planned aid to East Ghouta; Daesh suffered heavy losses in northern Raqqa in the Syrian Army's offensive there; the UN has postponed the continuation of peace talks from Monday to Wednesday, March 9 in order to allow the ceasefire to take hold. As for regular Syrians, they have hope:
"Everywhere I have visited — in Damascus, Homs, Hama and Al-Salameya — people spoke of hope," [UNICEF Director Anthony] Lake stated on Tuesday. "Hope that there will be peace, hope that peace can be found in more than a diplomatic piece of paper, hope that peace will return in their daily lives."
"As I crossed the lines into the encircled neighborhood of Al Waer, I saw things that I had not seen two years ago — shops open for business, people walking freely, children learning in classrooms above ground instead of huddling in basements for fear of snipers," Lake pointed out.
The cargos of militants' weapons and ammunition, including RPG, landmines and various types of ammunition, were seized by the Syrian army in two separate operation in the Eastern and Northeastern deserts of Sweida province.
There were 90 anti-tanks Israeli and US made mines, 25 RPG Shells and a number of BKS machinegun boxes in the seized cargoes.
Comment: Israeli and US-made ammo and weaponry seems to be the least of it...
The man behind the curtain: Israeli colonel captured among ISIL terrorist forces in Iraq
Fact number #2: US has the use of Turkish airbases which it uses to fly air sorties against ISIS in Syria
Ergo:
Theoreticaly US planes could be flying from Turkey into Syria to hit Ankara-backed militants who are also attacking from their Turkish bases into Syria.
Meditate on that.
Of course, for Riyadh, this is to confront the "Iranian threat" in Yemen, Iraq and Syria, where "the Russians aid Assad." That is to say, where Russia supports the Syrian government to free the country from Daesh (Islamic state) and other terrorist groups, financed and armed by Saudi Arabia as part of the US / NATO strategy.
Riyadh has over 250 fighter-bombers with dual conventional and nuclear capability, provided by the US and by the European powers. Since 2012, Saudi Arabia is part of the "Nato Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency," the NATO agency that manages European Eurofighter and Tornado fighters, of which Riyadh bought from Britain twice the number of that of the whole Royal Air Force.
Comment: If this were Iran, the whole Western world would be in hysterics. But since it's a US ally, they are allowed to break an international treaty. They are already committing war crimes in Yemen, what's the difference if these head-choppers start a nuclear world war.
