US seen as giving up on goal to overthrow Assad, seeks partnership with Moscow

If Moscow and Washington are able to overcome their difficulties and start close cooperation in Syria, there could be a kind of a Russian-American "arms brotherhood" in the fight against terrorism, German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported.

As for now, both parties are cooperating in Syria, but only in order to avoid dangerous incidents. However, if their cooperation plan is implemented in practice, it will become a kind of "reset" for both parties.

"The fact that President Barack Obama gradually gives up his original goal — the overthrow of Assad, and gives priority to the fight against Islamic State has become noticeable long ago. The planned new partnership with Moscow would consolidate this course," the article said.

Comment: Sounds like wishful thinking on the German newspaper's article.

2014 WikiLeaks: Things to know about the Gulen empire trying to take down Erdogan

Erdogan-Gulen

The government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan falls, a large portion of the blame — or credit, depending on your perspective — will lie with a little-known Muslim cleric named Fethullah Gulen and his shadowy, globe-spanning empire. Over the past decade, Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been in a quiet struggle with Gulen's followers for control of the country's Islamist politics. That's a battle that's mostly taken place behind closed doors — but not anymore.

As a central player in Turkish politics, Gulen has frequently gained the attention of U.S. officials, both in Washington and Turkey. As detailed in the 155 diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks which mention him, U.S. officials have struggled to make sense of the man, but their collected writings on Gulen provide a snapshot of how deeply he and his followers have penetrated the Turkish state and illustrate what a severe threat he poses to the Erdogan government.

Here are five takeaways from Gulen's appearances in the WikiLeaks cables.

Turkey evacuating intelligence officers from Aleppo battlefield

Informed sources said that the Turkish intelligence agents, who have been training Nouralddeen al-Zinki terrorists in Northern Syria, have been ordered to leave the battlefields in Aleppo due to the Syrian government forces' increasing advances and meantime lack of unity among militant groups.

"Suicide attacks of al-Nusra front and Nouralddeen al-Zinki on the government forces' position to reopen Castillo supply line to Northern part of Aleppo city have thus far failed and the Syrian army forces' advances in different battlefields in Northern Aleppo have continued," the sources said.

"On the other hand some of the terrorist groups have no intention to partake in Aleppo battles against the government forces. All these have forced Turkey to start evacuating its trainers and intelligence officers from Aleppo," they added.

"Over 500 terrorist have been killed in the last four days in Aleppo. Ahrar al-Sham is accusing the Free Syrian Army and al-Qaeda-affiliated groups of treason through refusing to send more fighters to battlefields in Aleppo. Turkey and other foreign backers of terrorist groups have come to this conclusion that their affiliated terrorist groups in Aleppo can not resist against the waves of government forces in Aleppo city" the sources went on to say.

The Turkish government closed a strategic border crossing with Syria's Northwestern province of Idlib on Saturday.

Bab al-Hawa border crossing overlooking Idlib province in Syria was closed by the Turkish government.

The Arabic-language Halab al-Youm news channel reported that the main reason for closing the border crossing was the failed coup in Turkey.

Bab al-Hawa is one of the main routes which link the terrorists in Idlib and Aleppo to each other.

As soon as news of the military coup attempt in Turkey reached the media, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called upon the Turkish authorities to avoid bloodshed and resolve the crisis in constitutional order - an appeal echoed by world leaders.

"It is important right now to avoid any bloodshed and resolve all issues constitutionally," Lavrov said on Friday evening.

Russia's Foreign Ministry later issued a statement calling upon the Turkish authorities and Turkish people "to settle the problems without use of force, and to respect the constitutional order" and without "the use of force."

"Moscow is very concerned about the recent events in the Republic of Turkey. The aggravation of the political situation on the background of existing terrorist threats and an armed conflict in the region mean an increased risk to international and regional stability," the ministry said.

"We reaffirm readiness to work... with the elected leadership of the Republic of Turkey to advance bilateral relations for the benefit of our peoples and to find effective solutions to pressing international issues, primarily related to countering the threat of terrorism," the statement added.

The Federal Aviation Administration has banned all flights between the United States and airports in Turkey.

The indefinite ban took effect on Saturday in the wake of the failed coup attempt in Turkey that left 265 dead and over 2,000 injured.

"The FAA is monitoring the situation in Turkey in coordination with the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security and will update the restrictions as the situation evolves," the agency said in a statement.

The US embassy in Ankara issued a statement Saturday warning that US government officials have been told not to use the airport in Istanbul and that US citizens in the country should continue to seek shelter despite Turkey's claim that they have completely neutralized the attempted coup.

Claims emerge that Turkish coup was a staged performance by Erdogan in order to wield more power

What began as a brainstorm erupted into a full blown conspiracy theory when a Politico reporter poured gas on the fire claiming that his Turkish source believed the coup was a staged performance.

Social media is abuzz with new claims that Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faked the coup attempt against the government after the country's leader called the botched overthrow "a gift from Allah." Posting under #TheaterNotCoup social media users ask aloud whether the whole think was an elaborate scheme for the Turkish strongman to garner even more control.

The theory originated when Politico's European correspondent Ryan Heath said that a Turkish source of his believed that the entire debacle was a staged performance citing the fact that the government was able to communicate with everybody in Turkey via SMS text message and that Erdogan would be able to "clean" the military of secularists and install hardline Islamists in both the judiciary and the armed forces stripping away any constitutional check on the leader.

Shadow network: Leaked data reveals U.S. is training foreign soldiers and police with little oversight, safeguards, or accountability

US army training exercise Iraq

A soldier of the Iraqi army’s 16th Division kicks in a door during a training exercise at Besmaya Range Complex, Iraq, March 21, 2015.
At 9:30 a.m. on a gray winter Monday, the State Department officials began certifying the names at a rate of one every two minutes and 23 seconds.

In rapid succession, they confirmed that 204 police officers, soldiers, sailors, and airmen from 11 countries had committed no gross human rights violations and cleared them to attend one of more than 50 training efforts sponsored by the U.S. government. The programs were taking place at a wide variety of locations, from Italy, Albania, and Jordan to the states of Louisiana and Minnesota.

Thirty-two Egyptians were approved for instruction in, among other things, Apache helicopter gunship maintenance and flight simulators for the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk. Azerbaijanis were cleared for a U.S. Army course on identifying bio-warfare agents in Maryland and underwater demolition training with Navy SEALs in San Diego. Thirty-three Iraqis were certified to attend a State Department training session for bodyguards, held in Jordan. Bosnians were bound for Macedonia to prepare for deployment to Afghanistan. Ukrainian police were selected for peacekeeping training in Italy. Romanians would study naval operations in Rhode Island and counterterrorism in Skopje.

This was only the beginning of one day's work of vetting security personnel for U.S. training. A joint investigation by The Intercept and 100Reporters reveals the chaotic and largely unknown details of a vast constellation of global training exercises, operations, facilities, and schools — a shadowy network of U.S. programs that every year provides instruction and assistance to approximately 200,000 foreign soldiers, police, and other personnel. The investigation exposes the geographic and political contours of a U.S. training system that has, until now, largely defied thorough description.

Soldiers arrested for participating in an attempted military coup in Turkey told interrogators that they thought they were on exercises when the attempt began, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported.

The group consisting of 10 officers and 67 soldiers was arrested at the Ataturk international airport in Istanbul.

During interrogation, they said they mistook the coup attempt for a training exercise.

"Only when people started to climb the tanks did we realize what was really going on," one of the detainees was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

According to the soldiers, the colonel, who was in command, ordered to step back when police units arrived.

Russian harassment and other dangerous lies

Whenever the subject of American foreign-policy catastrophes comes up, the word "Iraq" immediately comes to mind. But George W. Bush's ill-fated invasion of that hapless land in reality did not do irreparable damage to the United States. That is not to trivialize the costs, including trillions of dollars and the deaths of thousands of Americans plus hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, but the reality is that the U.S. homeland was not attacked and the economy has not collapsed, making Iraq a war that should never have been fought but not a defeat in historic terms.

One thinks of Russia less frequently when U.S. policy failures are examined. In 1991, Russia was a superpower. Today it is a convenience, a straw man fortuitously produced whenever someone in power wants to justify weapons expenditures or the initiation of new military interventions in faraway places. Much of the negative interaction between Washington and Moscow is driven by the consensus among policymakers, the Western media, and the inside-the-beltway crowd that Russia is again—or perhaps is still and always will be—the enemy du jour. But frequently forgotten or ignored is the fact that Moscow, even in its much-reduced state, continues to control the only military resource on the planet that can destroy the United States, suggesting caution should be in order when one goes about goading the bear.

Truly, the unwillingness to takes steps after 1991 to assist Russia in its post-communism transformation into a stable, prosperous, and secure state modeled on the West is the most significant foreign-policy failure by both Democratic and Republican administrations over the past 30 years. The spoliation of Russia's natural resources carried out by Western carpetbaggers working with local grifters-turned-oligarchs under Boris Yeltsin, the expansion of NATO to Russia's doorstep initiated by Bill Clinton, and the interference in Russia's internal affairs by the U.S. government (including the Magnitsky Act) have exploited Russian vulnerability and have produced a series of governments in Moscow that have become increasingly paranoid and disinclined to cooperate with what they see as a threatening Washington.

Comment: For an individual, creating new and dangerous phobias and subsequently believing in them would be an alarming sign of brain disfunction, a break with reality or insanity. Is it any different for a country or a conglomerate of countries to invent and promote a phobia, then fabricate both reasons and proof it exists? Such is the case: USA - NATO - Russophobia

A pro-American coup attempt in Turkey

A coup attempt has taken place in Turkey

At this moment the fate of the country is being decided. A military group occupied the state television building where they transmitted message of seizing power. According to the military, they are holding hostage commander-in-chief and the government was also arrested. Earlier, Prime Minister of Turkey Binali Yildirim made a statement that the attempt of the rebellion has failed

In a Skype, which was broadcast on the air of CNN Turk, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the supporters of Islamist leader Fetullaha Gülen in the organization of the coup. Fetullaha Gülen is residing in the United States, and cooperating with US intelligence agencies. Erdogan urged people to go out to the streets and prevent the coup. Where is Erdogan himself is currently unknown. Meanwhile, military helicopters attacked the presidential quarter in Ankara. In Ankara and Istanbul and other major cities, people go out to the streets, trying to stop the military vehicles.

However, judging by the tanks in all cities of the country the Coup has the potential to end in the military's victory. While not reported exactly who led the coup, military answered that they intend to restore democratic rights and freedoms. Open liberal rhetoric is the evidence in favor of the coup's Atlanticist orientation.

Washington's Hand

The military coup has obvious geopolitical implications. It comes after a sharp reversal in the direction of the relations of Turkey and Russia and changes on the Syrian issue made by the country's leaders . On last eve Binali Yildirim said that Turkey intends to restore relations with official Damascus. In essence, this would mean a radical change of the whole geopolitical situation on the Syrian issue and the collapse of the US strategy in the region. Before that Erdogan removed Ahmet Davutoglu from the country's leadership. US realized that Erdogan decided to change the geopolitical course. United States decided to act and use their networks of influence in military circles, to initiate a coup.

We should expect reprisals against both the opposition, in favor of strengthening ties with Russia and Syria, as well as functionaries of the ruling party "Justice and Development". The pro-Russian course will be frozen.

Comment: Though the coup failed, there are many sides being presented to this turn of events. As the layers are investigated, the facts may lead to, or be construed to, a number of theories. Time will tell and future actions may help us determine, to the best of our abilities, the truth of it. That the US had a strong hand it it, may very well be.
