Terrorists continue to stage attacks in Idlib, Syria, 'this cannot go on forever' - Lavrov

The terrorists still control a large part of that territory in Syria, Russia's top diplomat states
The Syrian government has every right to protect people living in the country, including Idlib province, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Monday.

According to him, the remaining members of the Islamic State and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra) terror groups outlawed in Russia continue to stage provocations and are reluctant to abide by ceasefire agreements. "This is what is going on in the Idlib de-escalation zone," Lavrov said.

"We seek to ensure the implementation of Russian-Turkish agreements on resolving the Jabhat al-Nusra issue in the Idlib de-escalation zone," he noted. "As Russian President Vladimir Putin has said, Russia cannot tolerate these terrorists remaining safe there like in a preserved area," Lavrov said.

Washington Goes For The Jugular: Puppet 'Leader' in Venezuela Launches 'Military Coup' Against Maduro Government

"Oh my, a military coup!" Actually, no. It's just another Washington-directed riot in Caracas.
Self-declared Venezuelan 'interim president', Juan Guaido, aka RGN (Random Guy Named) Guaido (aka 'Guido', to the US State Department) - whose uncanny resemblence to former US president Barack Obama continues to amaze - has today outright called for a military uprising. So far, it just amounts to rioting at one location in Caracas, and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends that way.

With his bosses in Washington perplexed over the failure of their color-revolution attempt back in January, they're going for the jugular by attempting to instigate a military coup.

Appearing in a video that was apparently shot at (or near) a Caracas military airbase, and accompanied by a number of what appear to be Venezuelan soldiers, along with fellow 'revolutionary', Leopoldo Lopez, Guaido announced that:
"The moment has come to start the end of the usurpation."
This, ironically, is exactly what might happen now that Washington has gone 'all in' with an attempted coup: they have gifted Maduro all the justification he needs to round up Guaido and his accomplices.

Leopoldo Lopez, incidentally, was arrested in 2014 and - because the Maduro government has been far too soft in its treatment of what are de facto rabid terrorists - was held under house arrest after being found guilty of inciting violence during that first post-Chavez round of bombings, murder and mayhem. Lopez claims that he is in attendance for today's outbreak of democrazi because he was "released by the military under Guaido's orders." More likely, he simply walked out of his house...

Ahem. 'The polls' claim Creepy Biden leads race for Democratic presidential nominee

Two polls released a day after Joe Biden held his first campaign rally in Pittsburgh show the former US vice-president ahead of his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, improving his numbers by six to 11 points.

The Morning Consult poll conducted between April 22-28 showed Biden was the first choice for 36 percent of Democratic voters planning to take part in their state's primary, a six-point increase from last week.

Biden announced his official bid for the Democratic nomination last Thursday. A second poll, by SSRS for CNN, has given Biden a 24-point lead on Senator Bernie Sanders as the top choice for 39 percent of Democrats. That figure was 28 percent in March.

Political Prediction Market: Clinton's odds rise again
November 8, 2016

Washington (CNN) Hillary Clinton's odds of winning the presidency rose from 78% last week to 91% Monday before Election Day, according to CNN's Political Prediction Market.
(...)
Now, Clinton's odds stand at 91% while Trump's fall to 9%, a steep decline from the 23% he had one week ago on October 31.
In reality, Gabbard and Yang are probably pushing Sanders hard for top spot.

Saudi Arabia confirms to Russia that they will stick to global oil production deal

Saudi Minister of Energy Khalid al-Falih speaks during financial sector conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia April 24, 2019.
Saudi Arabia will not rush to boost oil supply to make up for a loss of Iranian crude due to U.S. sanctions, and will stick to a global deal on oil production, which could be extended to the end of 2019, Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih told RIA news agency.

The United States decided last week not to renew exemptions from sanctions against Iran granted last year to buyers of Iranian oil, taking a tougher line than expected. Oil prices rose on concerns of a tighter oil market.

Falih was speaking to Russia's RIA news agency on Tuesday, without specifying whether, or by how much, output levels could change after June.

The Saudi minister's comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said last week he had called OPEC and told the group to lower oil prices, without specifying to whom he spoke or whether he was referring to previous discussions with OPEC officials.

Venezuelan FM Jorge Arreaza: Guaido coup attempt was 'directly planned in Washington'

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido's associate Carlos Alfredo Vecchio leaves a meeting at the White House in Washington, DC in January 2019
The Venezuelan foreign minister has accused the US-backed opposition of planning Tuesday's coup attempt in Washington, and said the government would work to keep the peace.

Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza told Reuters by telephone that only around 30 soldiers had supported the coup instigated by opposition leader Juan Guaido. He described the plot as "another chapter" of an American effort to topple the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

While downplaying the scale of the uprising, Arreaza said it did not originate within the military, but that opposition leaders planned the event in Washington.

Comment: Russia condemned the media for acting as 'tool's promoting the violence in Venezuela:
The media shouldn't turn into a tool for forces seeking to escalate the situation in Venezuela by spreading fake news, the Russian Foreign Ministry said accusing the opposition of resorting to violence in the ongoing coup attempt.

"Objective" reporting is of the "utmost importance" for Venezuela, the ministry said in a statement as it called on the media around the world to avoid spreading false reports that would only make the situation on the ground worse. This serves the agenda of those players who want to plunge the Latin American nation into chaos, it said.

Moscow then accused the US-backed Venezuelan opposition led by the self-proclaimed interim president, Juan Guaido, of a brazen attempt to draw the armed forces into clashes and use the unfolding chaos to seize power.

"The radical opposition in Venezuela has once again returned to violent methods of confrontation," the ministry said. "Instead of peacefully settling political differences, they have taken a course designed to whip up conflict, and provoke breaches of public order and clashes involving the armed forces."

The Foreign Ministry also called on all sides of the political conflict inside Venezuela to stop violence and avoid bloodshed as it urged the international community to encourage all "responsible" forces in Venezuela to return to dialogue to resolve their differences.

'Espionage inside the embassy:' Assange accuses Ecuadorian diplomatic staff in London of spying

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has filed a criminal complaint in Ecuador, accusing the diplomatic staff at the London embassy of spying on the whistleblower before leaking illegally obtained data to a third party for extortion.

Lenin Moreno's government violated Assange's privacy by secretly recording the journalist's daily activities starting from March 2018, said a complaint submitted Monday to the attorney general's office in Ecuador on behalf of the whistleblower. It says the spying was conducted with the help of Promsecurity, a private contractor firm which administers electronic surveillance at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Naming three officials of the diplomatic mission, including Ambassador Jaime Marchán, as well as four members of Promsecurity, the complaint alleges that the government violated at least four counts of domestic law by illicitly monitoring Assange's activity. Those involved apparently tried to extort €3 million from WikiLeaks threatening to publish audio, video and personal documents of Assange unless they get paid. Ecuadorian law provides penalties of up to five years in prison for each violation mentioned in the complaint.

Trump sues Deutsche Bank, Capital One to block Democratic subpoenas in escalating fight

President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump, his three oldest children and the Trump Organization have sued Deutsche Bank AG and Capital One Financial Corp to try to block them from responding to subpoenas issued by U.S. congressional Democrats seeking financial records.

The lawsuit represents a new front in Trump's battle to stop the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives from probing the Republican president, his family, his businesses and his administration after Special Counsel Robert Mueller finished his inquiry into Russia's role in the 2016 election.

The complaint, filed on Monday night in federal court in Manhattan, also called quashing the subpoenas an urgent matter, saying that absent a court order Deutsche Bank planned to begin responding to its subpoena on May 6, and Capital One would feel obligated to begin responding by that date.

Deutsche Bank has long been one of the main banks for Trump's real estate empire, while the president's ties to Capital One were not immediately clear.

In the complaint, Trump, his adult children Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka, and the Trump Organization accused House leaders of pursuing records for no legitimate or lawful purpose.

"The subpoenas were issued to harass President Donald J. Trump, to rummage through every aspect of his personal finances, his businesses, and the private information of the President and his family," the complaint said. The lawsuit also accused Democratic leaders of hoping to "stumble upon something they can expose publicly and use as a political tool against the President."

New Silk Roads reach next level

Belt&Road billboard

The Beijing leadership seems to be aware that transparency is key for the global success of BRI, which is now supported by over 120 states and territories.

The Belt and Road Forum in Beijing was a graphic demonstration of how tactical adjustments are essential to enhance the appeal of a complex overall strategy. Talk about a turbo-charged 4.0 version of the legendary Deng Xiaoping maxim "crossing the river while feeling the stones."

For all the somewhat straitjacket approach of Chinese official pronouncements, President Xi Jinping stressed a sort of "three musts" for the advance of the New Silk Roads, or Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) - debt sustainability, protection of the environment (or "green growth"), and no tolerance for corruption.

Add to that a growing battle against trade protectionism, more bilateral free-trade deals, more financing or investments, cooperation on third-party markets, and even a plan to sell Silk Road bonds.

In his keynote speech, Xi stressed how multilateral cooperation on "six corridors and six channels serving multiple countries and ports" is all go. He was referring to BRI's six major connectivity corridors spanning Eurasia - and the fact that BRI is still in its planning stage; implementation actually starts in 2021.

SIPRI Fact Sheet April 2019: World trends in military spending for 2018 on the rise (except Russia)

Total world military expenditure rose to $1822 billion in 2018, representing an increase of 2.6 per cent from 2017, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The five biggest spenders in 2018 were the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, India and France, which together accounted for 60 per cent of global military spending. Military spending by the USA increased for the first time since 2010, while spending by China grew for the 24th consecutive year. The comprehensive annual update of the SIPRI Military Expenditure Database is accessible from today at www.sipri.org.

Total global military spending rose for the second consecutive year in 2018, to the highest level since 1988 - the first year for which consistent global data is available. World spending is now 76 per cent higher than the post-cold war low in 1998.* World military spending in 2018 represented 2.1 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP) or $239 per person. 'In 2018 the USA and China accounted for half of the world's military spending,' says Dr Nan Tian, a researcher with the SIPRI Arms and Military Expenditure (AMEX) programme. 'The higher level of world military expenditure in 2018 is mainly the result of significant increases in spending by these two countries.'

Comment: Immensely successful for the war industry, tension and fear drive military spending upwards:
The surge in military spending has been fueled by the exacerbating rivalry between the US and China, as well as the strained situation in Asia where India increased its spending by 3.1 percent and Pakistan by 11 percent.

Even though the numbers indicate that Moscow is not the country fueling a new arms race, SIPRI reported that a huge uptick in military spending by Poland (growing by 8.9 percent), the Baltics, Bulgaria and Romania and several others are due to the purported Russian scare.

While Trump has been behind a drastic increase in the Pentagon budget and that of NATO, the US president has recently lamented that the money would be better spent elsewhere, calling on China and Russia to "get together" and stop "making these weapons."
More from RT, 4/30/2019, The experts weigh in:
"A lot of this spending, particularly in the case of Saudi Arabia and India, is for political reasons," Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst at the Pentagon, told RT. New Delhi and Riyadh seek to "curry favor" with Washington by purchasing the US weapons in hope for concessions in other areas, he explained. "A lot of that is aimed at trying to help the US defense industry to stay ahead [of their competitors] and hire more people," he explained, adding that the issue of the military expenditures has a "clear economic dimension."

"There is no good reason" for larger defense budgets, Ted Seay, a former US diplomat and senior policy consultant with the British American Security Information Council (BASIC), told RT. It is the West's fear of the perceived 'Russian threat' that has in fact led to destabilization on the European continent, he noted.

"There are military provocations taking place between NATO and Russia where there should not be any far in the 21th century when there is no logical reason for any confrontation between Europe and Russia," Seay said.

"There is not a military situation that necessitates [the likes of] Latvia or Poland to find a solution in greater military spending. It simply does not exist in this age. But there are people who seem to be intent on creating confrontation and encouraging the NATO countries to spend more money with no good reason."

Anyway, the latest trends show that the world is unlikely to see easing of tensions on the international arena anytime soon, Seay warns. "Too many people have too much money invested in war," he said.

Disregarding Yemen war concerns, Germany resolved to train Saudi soldiers

Seven Saudi soldiers are to receive officer's training from the German military starting in July. But some lawmakers have accused the German government of turning a blind eye to Saudi's brutal campaign in Yemen.

Germany will continue to train soldiers from Saudi Arabia despite its brutal military campaign in Yemen, reported German news agency dpa on Monday.

Five Saudi soldiers are expected to start an officer's training course in July with the German army, while two others are to receive similar preparation with the air force. Seven more Saudi soldiers will begin German language training in July in anticipation of starting officer's training in 2020.

The training was part of an agreement made in 2016 during an official visit by German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen.

Last year, Germany imposed a temporary halt on arms exports to Saudi Arabia following the assassination of Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi in a Saudi diplomatic building. However, it has lifted restrictions on certain components following French and British pressure.
